“Putting a smile on a face” is the mantra for the
new Manager of Volunteers, Jodie Matthews, at
Tanunda Lutheran Home. Prior to taking up this
position, Jodie worked alongside Elspeth
Morgan (nee Herring) until Elspeth moved to
new challenges at Carers Link.
Jodie, a qualified cook, has
always had an interest in Aged
Care and gained qualifications
in this area. She found that the
work wasn’t quite what she
expected. She wanted more
time to interact with the
residents. With this in mind
she began a course in Life
Style and started volunteering
at Tanunda Lutheran Home in
their Life Style and Barossa
Club activities.
Jodie moved to Williamstown four years ago
after moving around much of the State of South
Australia. “I’m happy to settle in the Barossa.
It’s always been on my “to do’ list,” she said.
Jodie says she has a passion for gardening and
likes to read, “Quite a quiet life really.”
When we met up with Jodie, she was just five
days into her new role. “I’m thrilled to be given
this opportunity. I have a
passion for interacting with
people. I’m happy to just
see where it goes.” she said.
Jodie’s first aim was to
focus on understanding the
role. “It’s a learning
process. There is lots of
information and support
available. Lots I’ve yet to
find,” she said. Jodie aims
to talk to residents to find
what they need and looks
forward to new starts in
2015.
“At the end of the day it’s about making
residents happy - putting a smile on their faces!”
she said.
Lutheran Community Care - Would you like to make regular visits to older people who are in an aged care facility and have no other visitors? Good conversation and listening skills required.

VOLUNTEERING STRATEGY GRANT ASSIST
The Volunteering Strategy for South Australia was launched in January 2014. A critical document for the sector and the State as a whole, it was developed by a unique partnership of Volunteering SA&NT, the State Government of SA, the Local Government Association and Business SA. Partnership Board The strategy provides a vision and action plan for volunteering in South Australia for the next six years, its aim being to ensure that the number of volunteers continues to grow, despite pressure from changing community norms such as increased urbanisation, evolving technology, complex legislation, access to insurance cover, volunteer rights, and recruitment and recognition. Working Groups A partnership board comprised of representatives from each of the strategy partners will oversee and monitor the implementation of the strategy and its operational plan. Four cross sector working groups have been established. Each of the working groups will be responsible for the delivery of the strategy through one of the four focus areas namely:
Invest in the foundations of volunteering
Promote and inform on the benefits of volunteering
Implement leading practice and high quality standards
Proactively adapt through continuous improvement. Reference Group A reference group has been created to give feedback on individual initiatives during the strategy’s implementation.

Volunteering worth $290 billion a year
The monetary value of volunteering in Australia is worth much more than originally calculated, new
figures from Flinders University researcher Lisel O’Dwyer show.
Dr. O’Dwyer has re-evaluated her study into the economic contribution of volunteering to Australian
society - first conducted at the University of Adelaide in 2011 - with the new data showing a massive
increase in the value of volunteering from 200 billion to 290 billion a year.
According to the latest report, the economic contribution of volunteering to Australian society
surpasses revenue sources from major sectors including mining, agriculture, defence and retail.
Despite the significant economic value of volunteering in Australia, Dr. O’Dwyer says the true value of
volunteering spans far beyond a dollar value.
“The real value of volunteering is difficult to measure. Volunteers tend to be fitter, healthier and have
greater social connections, which produce general goodwill and flow-on effects for government -
there’s less crime and greater community wellbeing.”
“And people who experience the benefits of volunteering have a better quality of life.”
According to Volunteering Australia there are more than six million volunteers in
Australia, with people aged 45 to 54 comprising the highest bracket of volunteers and slightly more
women (38 per cent) than men (34 per cent) giving their time to voluntary work.

A website is now available for information about funding and support services to community, volunteer and sporting groups and can be accessed through a single gateway to State Government grants. GRANT assist provides a simple online guide to what is available for community groups for a variety of purposes, including upgrades to sporting facilities and clubrooms. The website also provides tips on navigating the application and assessment process. GRANT assist is a result of government agencies working collaboratively to ensure the community is at the heart of their work. The community section is now available at www.grantassist.sa.gov.au. In our current climate of Police Checks and their sometimes confusing and frustrating requirements, we found the following information from Volunteering Canada’s 2012 Edition of the Screening Handbook a helpful guide.
10 Steps of Screening
1. Assessment - outline how you collect, use and disclose information
2. Volunteer Position and Assignment Description - clearly describe what is expected of the volunteer
3. Recruitment and Communication Strategy - Inform what personal information is collected and why.
4. Application Form and Information Package - Limit to what is really necessary.
5. Interview and Information Sessions - These allow for informed decisions between organisation and participant.
6. References - get consent from volunteer before contacting.
7. Police Checks - this information must be directly related to the volunteer position and circumstances
8. Orientation and Training - Inform volunteers about privacy practices to help build trust and pride
9. Support, Supervision and Evaluation - balance between organisation program safety and volunteer’s rights
10. Follow-up and Feedback - provide evidence of a volunteer’s progress and history.
