Culture of Support -Let’s talk about Mental Health!

The staff team at St Joseph’s at Fleming play a critical role in caring for the health and well-being of all our residents. It is just as important to recognize that some of our staff team members may also need help to sustain their own health and wellbeing or that of loved ones. It is the goal of St Joseph’s at Fleming to assist to the best of our abilities all of our staff team by ensuring they have access to support and counselling when they need it. Some issues are temporary and need a little TLC while others impact behaviors and may indicate an underlying mental health problem. St. Joseph’s at Fleming offers a Staff Employee Assistance Program FSEAP

Practicing our Codes

For the next year we are building on our codes education by practicing a code each month. We have nine codes, each with a specific colour and meaning.

Red /Fire Green /Evacuate Black/Bomb Grey/Button Down Yellow/Missing Person Blue/Medical Emergency

White/Violence Orange/External Disaster Silver/Lockdown

February was Code Silver

On Wednesday February 26th, 2020 the first Code Silver training was trialed at the front Reception area. A Code Silver page means a lockdown is in progress. An event is occurring where there is a hostage situation, weapons or threat of weapons inside or outside on the premises of SJAF.

March Code is Grey

Code Grey Button-Down process is a shutdown of external air exchange into the building, in the event of an external air contaminant such as smoke from a fire or chemical gases in the air.

Residents’ Council Highlights – Feb. 7, 2020 (For details see copies of minutes in the library)

Chairperson: Lisa Herr.

5. Residents’ Right # 7 – Knowing Your Caregivers “Every resident has the right to know who is looking after you no matter who they work for or how they are employed.” 8.1 Ministry Reports – 1 A complaint was investigated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Inspectors in January. There were no Compliance Orders. This report is kept in the binder in the Library and is available for reading. 9.2 St. Joseph’s at Fleming’s Value - Integrity: What does integrity mean to you? Resident responses:

• Doing things with the best intentions.

• Positives of life.

• Doing the right things at the right time.

• A smile goes a long way. 9.3 TerraCycle Cigarette Waste Recycling Program: Would the Residents’ Council like to purchase a Cigarette Waste Receptacle for the residents’ smoking section? The waste receptacle costs $100.00 to purchase. When the waste receptacle is full, the home would ship the receptacle back to TerraCycle (there are no shipping fees). If there is over 3lbs of waste in the receptacle, the home would receive $1.00. The Residents’ Council does not wish to purchase the TerraCycle Cigarette Waste Receptacle. 11. Open mic: Penny: suggested that the home post signs in braille. Signs for things such as: washrooms, elevators and exits. Frank Benincasa: braille works on things such as buttons in elevators, computer buttons, phones, things that a person would feel, our elevators are equipped with braille. Having the braille signs posted would not benefit anyone as the visually impaired person would not be able to see it and therefore would not be a benefit. At this time, we will monitor the situation and if things change then we will address it. 12. Door Prize: Won by Penny.

Students at St. Joseph at Fleming St. Joseph’s at Fleming is fortunate to have a partnership with the nearby Fleming College. We benefit by offering the students in various departments the opportunity to gain real workplace experience in our home. I can personally attest to the advantages of having the massage students offering twenty minute sessions to staff every Thursday afternoon. It helps soothe my computer use aches and pains! They also visit residents as prescribed by our medical staff. Other students that are with us this winter are Social Service Worker students. This group is here on Fridays with their instructor Allan Reeve. They spend a half an hour in weekly visits with selected residents who volunteer for the program. Nursing students come in from Trent/Fleming School of Nursing and PSW’s from the Fleming program. Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant students are partnered with our Physiotherapy Department and work alongside Jack and his staff. (see January newsletter profile online!) Individuals do their placements here and become regular faces on the floor. Roshni is a Fitness & Health Promotion student on a fourteen week placement. Bree is a Recreation student doing her volunteer hours. Tia is a student in the Community Integration Through Cooperative Education program. Her focus is recreation. Roshni Bree Tia on the floor

Evidence of the power of social media.

A post is circulating of Second World War veteran Fred Arsenault of Scarborough in his uniform, with his many medals, holding a sign that says: “I’m a WW2 veteran about to turn 100 years old on March 6, 2020 and would like to receive 100 birthday cards.” It’s made the rounds on Reddit, Twitter and Facebook. Even Toronto mayor John Tory gave him a mention on Twitter, encouraging people to send him a card. And that’s exactly what St. Joseph’s at Fleming is planning to do. Alex and Carley have gotten all our Veterans to sign a card for Fred and we’ll be sending it off! Happy Birthday Fred.

Word Search St. Patrick’s Day

Birds of Spring

As winter gives way to spring, our bird-nerd minds cannot help but begin to daydream about the wonderful birding days soon to come! Here’s a rough guide as to when some of your favourite bird species arrive back to eastern Ontario. Late-February: The beginning of spring migration and the arrival of our first migrants here in eastern Ontario. Blackbirds such as Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles are on the move north. “Prairie” (praticola) Horned Larks arrive and set up territories. Ring-billed Gulls are spotted hanging around in McDonald’s parking lots, eyeing kids as they walk by with french fries in their hands. Lots of robins stick around but some still make a show of returning. Robins base their migration on food supply not temperature. Lots of wild grape and there’s no need to fly south. Early-to-mid March: Birds of Prey come into focus around this time, with Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Northern Goshawks, Rough-legged Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, and Turkey Vultures beginning to make their northbound push. On lakes and rivers, as the ice breaks up and open water appears, waterfowl numbers begin to rise pretty much everywhere (especially so on Lake Ontario). White-winged gulls, Iceland and Glaucous, begin to swell in their numbers along the north shore of Lake Ontario. Typically, the first Killdeer arrive along the north shore of Lake Ontario by mid-March. Third-to-fourth-week-of March: All sorts of birds arrive in good numbers, including Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Saw-whet Owl, American Woodcock, Great Blue Heron, Eastern Meadowlark, and an abundance of waterfowl species. It is an exciting time of year for a duck lover, and indeed a great time of year for a goose lover! Greater Snow Geese are typically found in large numbers in extreme eastern Ontario during this time; their numbers continue to build to astonishing proportions over the following weeks. Rarer geese lurk among the thousands of common geese, providing a classic “Where’s Waldo?” challenge awaiting all those willing to accept it. Ross’s Geese and hybrid Ross’s x Lesser Snow Geese can be found among the Greater Snow Geese, and Cackling Geese are traditionally observed mixed in with migrant Canada Geese. https://eontbird.ca/?p=5525

A few Irish Jokes

O'Gara was arrested and sent for trial for armed bank robbery. After due deliberation, the jury foreman stood up and announced, 'Not guilty.' 'That's grand,' shouted O'Gara, 'Does that mean I get to keep the money?' An Irish lass, a customer: 'Could I be trying on that dress in the window?' Shopkeeper: 'I'd prefer that you use the dressing room.' Reilly is walking through a graveyard when he comes across a headstone with the inscription "Here lies a politician and an honest man." 'Faith now,' exclaims Reilly, 'I wonder how they got the two of them in one grave.
