Basic Design

1992–98 2005–07

* An evolutionary design is an advanced design that achieves improvements over existing designs through small to moderate modifications, with a strong emphasis on maintaining design

proveness to minimize technological risks (ref.: IAEA-Tecdoc 936) ** Based on IAEA recommendations on nuclear safety improvements (IAEA-EBP-VVER-03, Safety Issues and their Ranking for VVER-440, model 213 NPP’s. April, 1996)

1st step of substantial design changes (**)

2nd step of substantial design changes

New design of Mochovce 3&4 is “Evolutionary Design” like most of the Gen-III reactors

nowadays under construction, since:

it is firmly based on proven and well-consolidated technology of currently-operating NPPs

uses such technology as starting point for the safety upgrade that puts strong emphasis on

maintaining proven design to minimize technological risks

High margins for all potential extreme natural events

Plant is capable to withstand loss of safety functions for extended period of time

Additional mobile means (mobile DG, firetruck) can supplement existing systems to ensure the plant is maintained in safe conditions

Adequate systems and procedures are present to cope with Severe Accident scenarios to prevent or minimise radioactive releases

Plant safety margins can be further enhanced through dedicated safety improvements
