    Chamber News

On Saturday 19th June 2010, thelocal Canadian community onceagain laid siege to BangkoksBritish Club in celebratingCanadas 143rd Birthday. Formany local residents however, itmust have appeared as if the redshirts were once again on themove as over 300 Canada Daysupporters dressed in bright red

and white made their way to thisannual celebration. After all thechaos of April and May, it wasrefreshing to see so many adultsand children enjoying a fun-filledday on the Clubs lawn.

    I

f youre wondering why this yearscelebration was held on June 19thinstead of July 1st, there is an easyanswer. The Canada Day Committee

elected to pull the event forward to allowmore families to participate before the start ofthe summer home-leave exodus. Given theCommittees poor weather-forecasting skillsand demonstrated history of selecting rain-soaked days for this event, Im sure they donthave the confidence to say it was moved toreduce the risk of rain.

This years Canada Day event continuedwith its family friendly feel, and providedmany traditional picnic sporting events that allage groups can enjoy including ball hockey, volley ball, water balloon toss and tug ofwar. The event also delivered a fun-filled day

for the younger kids by offering a bouncycastle, Uncle James the Clown, Ron theJuggler, face painting, colouring, silhouettecut-outs and the BNH Hospitals Mascotsand Mad Scientist. Adults were treated tofree first aid and blood pressure checks byBNH Hospitals on-site staff as well as eyeexaminations by the Laser Vision.

The British Club is always a beautifulvenue for this annual event and you cancount on its professional staff to make it anenjoyable day for all. In support of the 2010celebration, the British Club delivered greatafternoon snacks for the kids as well as a

delicious dinner buffet that was available atthree different stations. Throughout the day,the Club also ensured guests were treated toa continuous supply of cold Canadian beer, wine and mixed drinks from 3 strategicallyplaced bars.

Following dinner, a brief birthday cakecutting ceremony was conducted by H. E.Mr. Ron Hoffmann, Ambassador of Canadato Thailand, Mr. Germain Bergeron - 2010Canada Day Committee Chairman and Mr.John Casella - Canada Days MC. While thechildren were excited about the cake, theadults were clearly more interested in theevenings lucky draw which offered over 90prizes and a top prize of a 3 day/2 night stayfor two at Club Med in Phuket.

The Canada Day Committee and theThai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce alsotook time during the evening to present acommunity service recognition plaque to Mr.Barry Osborne, the British Clubs departingGeneral Manager. Over the years, Barry hasbeen a strong supporter of the Canadiancommunity and everyone wishes him greatsuccess in his future endeavors.

A key element of Bangkoks annualCanada Day Celebration is the ever popularCaesar Drink Bar that is consistently staffedby the toga-clad Mr. John Caesar Stevensand his merry band of helpers. For thoseof you who may not be familiar with theClassic Canadian Caesar, its key ingredients

include: 1 oz - vodka 2 dashes - red hot sauce 3 dashes - freshly ground salt & pepper 4 dashes - worcestershire sauce 4 oz - clamato juice (a difficult commodity

to find in Bangkok) Rim glass dressed with lime juice and

celery salt And, served over ice with fresh celery and

    a wedge of lime

To the chagrin of Canadas many beerdrinkers, there is an evolving movement to

make the Classic Caesar into Canadasnational drink. Based on the local Canadiancommunitys affection for this classic cocktail,it clearly has a chance of succeeding.

Due to the lack of any serious rain onthis day, the Canadians were also affordedtheir first dry evening in several years toconduct the events legendary Boat Races. We wish to thank Ambassador Hoffmannfor his outstanding officiating at this yearsrace and for ensuring a level playing field forall participants. Clearly, FIFA could learn agreat deal by observing the Ambassadorsofficiating skills. In the end, it was a tough

and durable all-Thai team that gutted it outto dethrone the favoured Canucks. Are youwondering how the Canadians conduct boatraces on dry land? If so, youll have to attendthe 144th Canada Day Celebration to get theanswer.

    During the TCCCs July 21st

Executive Board meeting, the board presented Mr.Greg Goldhawk, Counsellor(Commercial), Embassy of Canadawith a recognition plaque to thankhim for his outstanding supportof the Thai Canadian Chamberof Commerce and Canadianbusiness community over thelast four years. Greg, it was a jobwell done and youll be missed bythe many friends and businessassociates you leave behind.

As Greg assumes his new roleas Ambassador of Canada toMongolia, we can be assuredhe and Sharon are heading offon one of lifes great adventures.

Theres nothing better than living the NationalGeographic experience and were confidenttheyll find a few Bangkok nomads campingon their front lawn one morning just taking

in the sights, sounds and fresh air ofUlaanbaatar.

In case youve never had an opportunityto visit Mongolia, let us offer up a fewinteresting facts on this beautiful and pristinecountry:

MongoliaLocated in the plateau of Central Asiabetween Russian and China, Mongoliacovers an area of 1,566,500 sq. kms. whichis roughly the size of Western Europe. Thecountry is mountainous with an averagealtitude of 1,580 meters above sea level, which makes Mongolia one of the highest

Farewell to Greg GoldhawkA Great Business Associate & Friend of the Chamber

countries in the world. The lowest point is Hoh Nuur depression

at 560 meters above sea level and the highestpoint is the Khuiten peak at 4,374 meters. The capital Ulaanbaatar lies at 1500 metersabove sea level. The geography of the countryis characterized by great diversity. From thenorth to the south, it can be divided into 4areas: mountain forest steppe, mountain

steppe and, semi-desert and desert. Incontrast to most visitors expectations, muchof the countrys territory is mountainous.

Why visit Mongolia?Mongolia lies at the heart of Asia! This huge, sparsely populated land encompasses afabulous array of pristine landscapes anda nomadic people whose lives are in manyways unchanged from the days of GenghisKhan and the mighty Mongol Empire.

Here, where nomadic herders stilldepend on nature for survival, youll findpriceless luxuries like open space, untouchedwilderness, and pristine air and water in

abundance, each cherished by the Mongolianpeople. And as the 19th largest country in the

world, Mongolias considerable size means anenormous variety of landscapes, and plentyof room for guests. Awesome expanses ofrolling steppe, home to Mongolia's famoushorses and herdsmen, meet high glacialmountains, impenetrable forests and deep, crystal lakes.

Like the Mongol Empire of GenghisKhaans time that stretched from Japan toHungary, Mongolia today remains a placeof natural and cultural diversity and nearlyendless possibilities for discovery andadventure. Cherished by her people, andunspoiled in her beauty, Mongolia waits to

    be discovered by you.

Ulaanbaatar, capital of MongoliaLike nearly one half of the Mongolianpopulation, the capital city of Ulaanbaataris herself a nomad. The city has changedlocations more than twenty times over thepast 350 years before taking root in hercurrent location in a sweeping valley boundedby four sacred peaks, including Bogd Khanmountain to the south.

Ulaanbaatar today is a vibrant city of morethan one million residents. The city reflects aclose and sometimes amusing juxtaposition

of nomadic traditions and modern society, perhaps best summarized by her skylinedotted with both gers (felt tents) and toweringskyscrapers. The citys contrast can also befound among those who call it home, fromtraditional-clothing-clad herders, to Armanisuit-wearing business men and women,to a growing number of ex-patriots hailingfrom nearly every corner of the globe. Onlyin Ulaanbaatar might you find a horse cartbouncing down the central avenue alongsidea Mercedes Benz, or a market selling bothlivestock and designer clothing.

In short, there is something for everyone, and always a site to behold in Ulaanbaatar.

The Thai-Canadian Chamber ofCommerce is honoured to welcomeMs. Ping M. Kitnikone to Thailand, replacing Mr. Greg Goldhawk.

As background, Ms. Kitnikone joinedForeign Affairs and International Trade

Canada in 1994 and has served in Beijing,Taipei, Shanghai and most recently asthe Canadian Consul General in Mumbai. Her assignments at Headquarters haveincluded the International Financial Institution

After a strong turn-over-the-year performance, Canadas economicexpansion has lost some momentum, mirroring the broader slow-ing trend in global growth. We expect real GDP increased around a2% annualized rate in the second quarter, less than half its first-quarter advance.

Job creation has been one important area which continues tooutperform expectations. The economy has recouped virtually all ofits recession job losses as of June, and hiring surveys pointing tofurther modest gains in the months ahead. Nonetheless, consumersentiment and big ticket spending have cooled over the summer, suggesting some trepidation among households over the sustain-

ability of the global economic recovery. Housing activity too hasrapidly come off the boil as high home prices, tighter lending criteriaand recent tax increases temper home sales, prices and residentialconstruction intentions. On balance, however, we expect continued, even if more moderate, output growth through the latter half of theyear and into 2011. Resource-related exports, production and invest-ment are ramping up again amid the continuing strength of emergingmarket demand and profitable commodity pricing, helping to offseta winding down in public infrastructure spending. Similarly, busi-ness investment in machinery & equipment as well as industrial andcommercial leasing activity are on the rise, supported by increasedcapacity utilization and healthy corporate balance sheets. Inventoryrestocking will continue to add to production this year, given leanstockpiles at the manufacturing, wholesale and retail levels. Leading

composite indictors are still showing a broadly based expansion. While slowing global growth is expected to moderate the growth indomestic export volumes in the latter half of the year and into 2011,Canadas relatively healthy fiscal and banking sector fundamentalsshould keep the nation at the top end of the G7 performance lad-der.

    THAILAND

THAILAND - The Bank of Thailand raised its policy rate by 25 basispoints to 1.5% in July for the first time in over a year. Although yearlyinflation at 3.3% slowed in June, there is scant evidence that the so-cial unrest retrieved any economic momentum built up to that point.Export growth remains the backbone of the recovery with shipmentorders already rebounding in June. Exports account for two-thirdsof the economy and remain supported by strong regional demand.Consumption and tourism were most affected, as tourist arrivals fellsignificantly in April and May. Partly as a result of the stressful politi-cal environment, Thailands industrial output eased as well, as theimposition of curfews disrupted night shifts and product shipments.

Manufacturing output contracted by 1% in April-May vis--vis the firstquarter, though the slowdown has proved temporary as productionrecovered most of the lost ground in June. Although a pre-turmoilpickup in consumer spending failed to persist, a comeback is antici-pated as labour market conditions remain supportive of income gainsand consumer confidence rebounded in June within a whisker of thepre-political-crisis level. Business sentiment has already recoveredsignificant ground, as policy efforts by the Thai government offeringincentives to local firms and foreign investors have supported an ex-pedite comeback. Contrary to global trends, the fiscal policy agendahas also been tilted towards expansion as government spending willtake the 2010-11 public deficit all the way to the maximum allowedunder the constitution.
