VP of Strategy, LLC: NAB 2011 Review: A look at the best Media Asset Management (MAM) systems (i.e. DAM) and other cool stuff. (p.1) Attendance was up at this yearʼs NAB Show, the world's largest electronic media event covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content across all mediums. 88,044 attendees from 151 countries converged on the Las Vegas Convention Center to see and hear about the latest digital media technology from over 1,500 vendors and a lineup of A-list speakers that included NAB President (and former US Senator) Gordon Smith, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, Hollywood director James Cameron, and many other industry experts. The VP of Strategy, LLC team attended this show with the primary goal of checking out the latest improvements to technology in the digital content lifecycle, with a focus on enterprise Media Asset Management (i.e. DAM) solutions. While we were not able to see a demo of every exhibitorʼs DAM / MAM solution, we did see a quite a few. Below are profiles on the best ones we saw, as well as a list of all DAM / MAM and Storage / Archiving solution exhibitors at the show. But first... three quick mentions of some of the coolest non-DAM technology we saw at NAB 2011: GoPro wearable HD sports camera (http://gopro.com ) - Canʼt wait to strap this thing to my helmet on the next family snowboarding vacation. Warning: one possible side effect -- this technology may inspire a whole new generation of “JackAss” stars. NewTek TriCaster (www.newtek.com/tricaster) -- Anyone can simultaneously produce, live stream, broadcast, project, and record HD and SD network-style productions. Think “Wayneʼs World” with ESPN production value. Red One Digital Cinema Camera (http://www.red.com) -- Started by the founder of Oakley, this impressive camera is piling up Oscars and reinventing the camera industry. Check out the pics from their NAB 2011 booth: (http://www.red.com/press/nab) The Best Media Asset Management (i.e. DAM) Solutions at NAB 2011 Avid Interplay -- Since Avid acquired Blue Order over a year ago theyʼve shown a commitment to becoming a leader in the DAM / MAM and a potentially dominant player in the greater ECM space. The announcement of Interplay Central at NAB -- the latest evolution of Avidʼs Interplay family of solutions -- highlights their next-generation of workflow tools for media creation, distribution and management around their Interplay Media Asset Management solution. OpenText -- Originally acquired from Artesia, OpenTextʼs DAM solution continues to evolve with many great new features including revamped search and metadata tools, APIs for easy integration into BPM (and other ECM ecosystem technologies), and a great looking Flash-based user interface that takes advantage of Adobeʼs powerful AIR platform. The Best Media Asset Management (i.e. DAM) Solutions at NAB 2011

(Continued from previous page)

Harris Corporation - Invenio -- Invenio was one of the more impressive full service DAM solutions I saw at the show. Positioned as a modular solution that addresses the entire content lifecycle, Invenio leverages tools from their Capture, Motion, Insight and Action technologies, as well as all other products and tools in the Harris broadcast communications infrastructure.

Tata Communications – MOSAIC -- Tata acquired MOSAIC in January of 2010, and is repositioning this technology as a cloud based media management solution geared toward the broader enterprise market. This is a “build as you go” solution that smaller organizations can get into with minimal technical infrastructure or financial risk. In addition, this solution is connected directly to the Tata Communicationsʼ Global Media Delivery Infrastructure, one of the most advanced and robust media delivery networks in the world. Tata has been pouring a lot of resources into this solution. Expect it to become a major component of their overall ECM product / service strategy.

GlobeCast - Netia -- GlobeCast, a subsidiary of French Telecom, acquired French software company Tetia in 2008, which made content management and workflow solutions primarily in the European audio-visual market. GlobeCast has repositioned Tetia as a Media Asset Management solution for the global broadcast market, which addresses the entire video content lifecycle. Very impressive user interface and workflow features.

Dalet -- Dalet made a serious move to get into the Sports Broadcast business with their acquisition of Gruppo TNT last year. Now they offer different “flavors” of Media Asset Management solutions, each designed to address the specific production and media management needs of sports, news and program workgroups: Dalet Sports Factory, Dalet News Suite and Dalet Media Life
