From the VCs desk..
It gives me immense pleasure to know about the
release of a News Letter by the Alumni Association.
After the up gradation of University College of Engi-
neering, Burla to a Unitary University, the expecta-
tions of one and all have increased to a large extent.
Certainly, the News Letter VSSUT will focus on the
activities of the University for the benefit of its mem-
bers, employment personnel and the Society at
large. Undoubtedly, this is a noble attempt on the part of the Alumni to
bring out the progress and achievement of the University.
I congratulate the organizers for their effort and wish, the News Letter
VSSUT will fulfill the purpose for which it is launched.

In this issue.. (Editorial Team)
VSSUT has always had many success stories to share. Sometimes, owing to
our busy life, we find it difficult to catch up with the latest of happenings at
this 50 year old institution. This initiative is an endeavor to reach out to the
stake holders of VSSUT and make them aware and feel proud of the pro-
gress that is being made consistently.
This opening issue features the triumph of the Robotics club in Eastern India
with an interview with its founders. We also have an interview with the
group who decided to go global with their 8th semester project work. VSSUT
has always believed in the mantra, Work Hard and Party Harder. Keeping
this spirit alive, the readers will also find a few glimpses of the series of tech-
nical and cultural events at the National and the State level that we had in
the last quarter. Last but not the least, we have an obituary for probably one
of the nicest souls that VSSUT have ever had, Late Prof (Dr) S. K. Sar. This
and many more as you read the first edition of VSSUT.. Happy reading..

The Newsletter team got a chance to have a quick talk
with this dynamic duo on the journey so far:
Team: Biswajit, so how did it all start?Biswajit: It all started in the year 2006, when we joined
VSSUT. We made a group of 15 interested students and
bought necessary equipment together. We thought of
robotics club in the same year. After few wins we realized
it is not that difficult to do it if Alumni and college help.
That actually happened and here we are today.
Team: How would you rate Robotics Club today?Biswajit: Currently, we stand #1 in Eastern India in terms
of number of National level competitions won in both
automatic and manual category. Most of them are at IITsand NITs. We have also represented our University at
ROBOCON 2009, which itself is a milestone in our his-
tory.
Team: Sarada, as the current secretary of the RoboticsClub, how would you rate your recent wins at various
Robo fests? Was it too difficult or were you confident?
Sarada: Our first win in NEXUS at IITB gave us the boost.
There we got a chance to test ourselves and then we
developed our robot in mechanisms, hardware and algo-
rithms to accommodate even complex problem state-
ments. This made us pretty confident.
Team: Also, as the secretary, when you pass on thebaton to the next batch, how do you see the future of
robotics in VSSUT and what steps are you taking to en-sure that the legacy continues?
Sarada: We have identified some potential students and
we are currently training them. They are also a part of the
core team. They are doing wonders.
Team: There are many a time, when what we envision isnot what we get due to various circumstances. Which
one move would you think helped you get along your
journey successfully?
Biswajit: Inspiring and creating a potential team, which is
passionate about robotics and good at team work, was the
right move. From the very beginning, in 1st year only, we
made a very good team. That is the only reason we have
succeeded.
Team: Biswajit, we know you are a dreamer and you sethigh goals for the robotics team. Is there any event
which you thought would be your goal. Were you able
to accomplish that?
Biswajit: ROBOCON-international is my goal. But we
could not achieve it due to lack of funds in time. It is still
our goal. Though I am going to pass out in a month, I
believe this goal is going to be realized soon by our jun-
iors. Sarada and I have promised to take all steps, as
Alumni, to make this dream real..
Team: Sarada, as the secretary, what do you think arethe key challenges that lie ahead for the Robotics Club.
Sarada: Fund, permanent and larger workspace, source of
raw material and advanced equipments are the main
challenges that lie ahead for the Robotics club
Team:We would like to know from both of you, on whatdo you think, can college or the alumni do to boost this
niche sector?
Biswajit: The Alumni and the college both have to believe
in the students abilities first. Necessary fund in time and
involvement of young and passionate faculty members
throughout the year is most needed. We are really thank-
ful to Prof. Debu Mishra for helping us out on this.
Sarada: Alumni and college together can get projects and
sponsorship from industries, which will help the studentsto achieve their goals.
Team: As youth icons what is the message that youwould like to convey to all the students of VSSUT before
passing out?
Biswajit: You should do what you love and give your
best to it and then success will follow you. May it be
robotics or anything you want in your life..
Sarada: Along with academics students should realize
their passion and explore it to achieve great heights in the
field of technology..

The Robot which has won several
battles for VSSUT
In recent times, Robotics has come out to
be a craze among VSSUTians. As a matter
of fact a Robotics society has come up
with the sole aim of training and inspiring
young and budding technocrats in
the field of robotics.
The success of this club can be
derived from the fact that in the
first quarter of 2010 itself, the team has
won around 5 All India first positions in
various institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT
Kharagpur, NIT Jamshedpur etc. This club
has brought a revolution in the field of
robotics in VSSUT. In the recently con-
cluded All India Techno-Management fest
of VSSUT, Samavesh 2010, more than 60
teams participated in around 4 robotics
events. It was a scene worth so many
accolades to see First year girls
bagging prizes in the robotics
arena.
This whole concept of starting the Robot-
ics club and this techno renaissance that it
has brought has been the brain child of
the dynamic duo of Biswajit Parida (Final
Year, Mechanical) and Sarada Prasanna
Nayak (Final Year, Electrical).

The 1st IUSM for the
year 2010-2011 was held
from 29th-31st January. This day was
treated with exhilarating anticipation by
all the students irrespective of the years
and colleges. Finally after days of prac-
tice, the big day dawned. The campus
was buzzing with a mix of excitement
and apprehension.
VSSUT had hosted the Sports Meet in
which more than 400 participants from
15 different colleges across the state had
participated.
The fixture of events included inter
college Cricket Tournament in which
VSSUT bagged the championship tro-
phy, the Basket ball Tournament in
which the very promising team of
VSSUT lifted the shield. For the first
time in the history of the tournament,
football was introduced and VSSUT did
hit the goal by winning the trophy for
the college. In the Table tennis match
again, VSSUT was the undisputed win-
ner. In badminton (girls), the winners
were the team VSSUT and (boys) the
winning team was from CEB, BBSR.
And the last event added onto the list
was volley ball with IGIT, Sarang as
winners.
Even the choking throats, profuse
sweating, cramped limbs, injuries and
terribly tiring matches couldn't over-
power the very spirit of the occasion. Tobe precise Fighting it out until you
reach the pinnacle of success was the
motto of IUSM.
The program concluded on an enthusi-
astic note with efforts of the students
and the teachers putting up such a sen-
sational and organized show. With this
ended another eventful meet showcas-
ing the eternal sportsman spirit.
On 25th Feb 2010, the very first convocation
of the newborn University was held.
The beautifully renovated Audio Visual
Club witnessed its first celebration of felici-
tating the graduates of the year 2005-2009.
His Excellency Shri M.C.Bhandare, Gover-
nor of Odisha had graced the ceremony

The formal part of the ceremony
was followed by exquisite lunch and a
cultural night. It included thrilling per-
formances by the official college band-SOULS, a skit by the college students and
presentations by the college dance club-
VIBRANZ.
Due to the efficient hard work of the stu-
dents, faculty members and participation
by the alumni, the event was a success.
Thus, this convocation stands testimony to
the very fact that the over 50 years old
college UCE has evolved into a fully
fledged University, infusing a sense of
pride amidst all VSSUTians.

Inter University Sports Meet 2010
VSSUT conducts First Convocation
The annual dramatic festival of VSSUT was
a platform to demonstrate the passion, the
desires and the angst of the actors of our
college. It transformed one and all into the
realms of theatre.
Amongst the plethora of events, the college
drama was phenomenal earning rave re-
views .It was a harmonious collage of a
commendable script, consummate actors
and a strong social message.
Events like mono-acting, dialogue writing,
script writing and dance competition en-
couraged each VSSUTian to rake up their
dormant talents.
VSSUT got talent and NUKKAD NATAK
were events class apart and had a huge
impact on the masses through their sheeringenuity and wit.
VSSUT is among the
very few technical
institutes which
boasts of conducting
a dramatic festival,
thus bringing out the unusual and innate
acting skills of the students .So, it is more
like a feather being added to the already
ornate cap of this more than 50 years old
grand institute.

VSSUT has the distinction of delivering
the best technocrats to the society for
half a century now. Taking this legacy
ahead is this group of Final year Com-
puter Science students who have re-cently participated in an International
conference based on the idea submitted;
and have brought laurels to the institu-
tion.
The newsletter team happened to meet
the team members (Ms Khusbu Patwari,
Monisha Dash ,Sudhashree and Manas
Das) to know more about this. Here is
what they had to say:
Q. Khusbu, what is this all about, please tell
us more on this.
Khusbu: Our paper is all about design
and performance evaluation of a new
proposed CPU scheduling algorithm
with dynamic time quantum concept. In
this paper we have compared the per-
formance of our algorithm with static
round robin.
Our paper was selected in International
conference ISCET (International Sympo-
sium of Computer Science engineering
and technology)-2010 held in MandiGo-
bindgarh, Punjab. More details can be
found at:

Q: So this is your 7th se-
mester project. Did you
ever think that your idea
will get selected in an
international conference?
Khusbu: No, we did not think of this
initially. But later on Rakesh Mohanty
Sir promoted us for the same. Our best
advantage was that our project idea
was original. We prepared the abstract
within 2 days. Thankfully, our hard
work paid off and our paper was se-
lected.
Q: Monisha, So what exactly was this confer-
ence all about?
Monisha: It is an International Confer-
ence where researchers from various
parts of the world gather to present
their ideas. There were 320 submissions
in total out of which 80 papers had been
selected and finally 40 groups had come
up with their presentation. It was a 15
minutes presentation(10 mins for pre-
senting + 5 mins for Q/A).
Q: Sudhashree, being a girl, how easy or
difficult was it for you to get this mission
accomplished?
Sudhashree: Yes, for sure getting this
through being a girl was a challenge. We have restricted hostel timings and
flexibility. But then again we worked
over the net. Rakesh Sir and Manas
were working with us in parallel till the
[ From left to right: Manas, Sudha, Manisha,
Khusboo ]
wee hours in the morning and we used
to share resources and discuss online.
We had the will and so found the way.
Q. What would be the 3 mantras that you
would share with your juniors?
1) Keep the funding ready beforehand
2) Keep track of the conferences that are
being organized. The best conferences
are held in April/May
3) Try to get access to the ACM POR-
TAL/ IEEE journals to get the most
recent research updates and activities.
Even IEEE student bodies can be
formed to get access to journals.
Q. So whats next? Where does this team go
from here?
Team: Currently we are working on
another research paper and in parallel
expanding the current idea so that we
can publish it in International journal.Even when we pass out, we would men-
tor the students in all their endeavors
for research related activities.
With utmost pride we would like to convey that the
Annual Techno-Management Festival of our University,
Samavesh 2010 was a great success, with overwhelming re-
sponse from students in and out the state. The reinforced back-
ing and support from the alumni this year has brought aboutradical changes in the way Samavesh was conducted previ-
ously.
Since its inception Samavesh has
grown by leaps and bounds, with up gradation
of management events and new technical events
being added every year. With 31 different
events and over 2000 participants from in and
around 50 colleges, this time it was regarded as
the biggest technical festival in the state.
The spotlight of this fest was the awe-
inspiring and challenging robotics events, which witnessed a
huge turnout of participants. Two guest lectures by Mr. Abhijit
Sen, DC Head of Software giant Infosys, Bhubaneswar and Sri
Gautam Sinha, specializing in Operations management from
IIT Kharagpur was too captivating for the students. The entertainment part got a big facelift by inclusion
of the Mega Show laser light show. The inspir-
ing workshops gave the undergrads a chance to
interact with some brilliant minds and to add to
their knowledge words from eminent personali-
ties.
Last but not the least it was very sup-
portive on the part of the electronic and print
media for covering all the events and spreading
the spirit and motto of Samavesh at large.
