To my readers and fellow pupils, on the other hand, I would like to thank you on behalf of all the year twelves who believe that their time at Deer Park would not have been the same without you!

How long did it take for you to finish your degree? I’m still studying!

What did you like and dislike about University? I went to three different Universities, so I had many differ-ent experiences. My first Univer-sity wasn’t very social, so I treated it as a job. After classes I just went home. My second university in Canberra was much better in terms of making me feel like I was a part of something. My third and cur-rent university is Melbourne Uni; I don’t spend much time there as I’m doing the course whilst teaching.

Is your job interesting? Why? It’s very interesting. I deal with 25 different people in each class, and I have 4 classes. It’s very interesting because it allows me to deal with many different peo-ple and there are not many jobs

that allow someone to get to know so many people on a daily basis.

What made you decide to teach Humanities? I teach Humanities be-cause that’s how a teaching degree works, you get credited on what subjects you study and what you do in Uni. I did International Re-lations and Politics before teaching, so Humanities at a 7-10 level fits in to that. I can also teach Politics or International Relations at VCE but they aren’t offered here at that level.

Why did you choose to teach at VUSC? I know for me it was really important to have a positive role model that I could relate to, and I hoped that as a young teacher I could fill that position for some of my students. I also felt like join-ing a school that might be expe-riencing a lot of changes. I knew that I would meet a lot of new and amazing people and I feel like working at VUSC will provide me with a range of opportunities.

What is your most memorable mo-ment in teaching in VUSC? I remember the day 10D made me upset because they had arrived late to M-Block. I told them they had embarrassed me in front of all the other teachers! The next day

Ms. Heyworth

7

they arrived in class before the bell rung in order to make up for the day before. That was a great moment.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Most of my spare time is oc-cupied with studying. I do like go-ing for a lazy breakfast on a Sunday morning, catching a foreign film or reading interesting books. I’m a sucker for reading the newspaper.

Do you have a hobby? I don’t have a hobby in terms of collecting stamps etc. but I love to travel; I’m always trying to save up and thinking where I could go to next. I play basketball and netball, and I would like to learn different languages – although I’m not currently learning any!

What was your most embarrassing moment while teaching at VUSC? When I make spelling mis-takes on the board! Although, I don’t really mind.

What was your most embarrass-ing moment while you were in high school? I used to be heavily bullied, so I would get teased a lot because I had red hair. I also didn’t get along all that much with everyone - due to the fact that I was more interested in doing my work. I guess had a lot of embarrassing moments, but there was not a particular moment that I

think was the most embarrassing.

Did you ever have a favorite toy when you were a child? No, I never really played with toys, I didn’t like Barbies or dolls. I used to hang out with my parents a lot as I was the only child. My par-ents would show me videos or books with little girls with red hair like me! So… I loved The Sound of Music, Pippy Long Stockings, Annie etc.

How do you see yourself 5 years from now? I would like to be teach-ing, but maybe overseas in an in-ternational school or maybe in an area in the world where students don’t have as much access to edu-cation. If not, then I’d like to work in a non-government organization writing policies for countries in the developing world so they can improve their education systems.

Who inspired you to be a teacher?

My dad. My dad is a teacher and he is the best teach-er I know. He taught me every-thing. II lost my mum when I was very young and I think my dad is the ultimate inspiration for me.

Every year, the Year 12s take a breather in between completing their coursework and taking on the exams. This year was no exception!

On Thursday, the 21st of October, the fun-loving, energetic ‘Class of 2010’ arrived at school as early as 7am. Dressed up in funky, weird and elaborate costumes they blocked the gate leading into the teachers’ car park, demanding an ‘entrance fee’.

It was tricky for the teacher’s to make them leave their post… but eventually the youth’s tummies were rumbling, and they made

their way into the food tech room.

After being treated to pancakes with honey, bacon, eggs and toast, sausages and cordial, the year twelves headed towards their fi-nal school assembly to be fare-

welled by their fellow pupils.

It was quite an emotional day for most of them, as they had spent many years at Deer Park and des-perately avoided saying ‘goodbye’. However, after being ushered out of school and having the gates shut be-hind them they were on their way.

Dividing the income they had earned from guarding the gates that morn-ing, Class of 2010 accepted their right of passage to have fun elsewhere!

What else could V.U.S.C stand for?

Page 10: VUSC Magazine Issue 2

A night of tears, laughter and dancing filled the air on the 22nd of October at Melrose Place.

It was a sentimental night. The staff and students shared their memo-ries, thoughts and emotions with one another in a way that they couldn’t in a classroom. We all knew that this was the end of our time to-gether, and we now reflected back onto an entire chapter of our lives.

The night opened with encourag-ing, reflective and inspirational speeches delivered by the school and campus principals, year twelve co-ordinators, a past School Cap-tain, and current School Captains.

We were then given a chance to flaunt our new Salsa moves before our par-ents, staff and school council. Many months of practice towards learning how to dance paid off, as the act was no longer deemed as a requirement, but rather an opportunity to let go

of any stresses that the year of hard work had placed on our shoulders.

The parents were then thanked for their support and invited for some cold beverages outside, before it was time for the ‘party’ to begin.

Soon we were led to our tables, where we noticed little yellow place-cards with caricature versions of ourselves drawn onto each of them. We passed stories and jokes around the dinner tables whilst digging into our gourmet meals.

As all we really wanted was to build memories and share these last precious moments with one another, the starter was all we really needed to feel filled.

We made our way to other tables and took countless photographs! Mrs Emirler and Mrs Lee had dif-ficulty getting us seated for the main course, as they asked us, “Year twelves, there will be plenty of time for photos later. Do you want to be the Year who takes more photos than any other year before you?’’ to which we replied in unison, “YEEEEEAH!”

When it was time for the dessert, Ms Jephson and Ms Baka took to the stage to share comical and heart-felt speeches with us. More kind words

Valedictorian DinnerPaulina Nagorski

were then said by the captains, David Lie and Lee Nguyen. More laughter and tears filled the room.

Annie Vo and Saron Girma then announced the ‘funny awards’ to both the students and teachers. Some examples of awards were: Andrew Nguyen/Monkey for ‘best nickname’, GeoffreyApineru for ‘our teddy bear’ and ‘best dressed’ for Ms Steele and Ms Condylis. The music then started to play, and we all left our dessert, to enjoy dancing in each other’s company. We even managed to get most of the teachers on the dance floor!

We celebrated for as long as time could permit, but soon enough, the night was over. It was time for us to say what needed to be said.

Those dreaded words that never want to leave our lips: “goodbye”.

HOW IT FEELS TO BE FINISHED

12

I’m sure my thoughts on finally fin-ishing VCE are a universal repre-sentation of the Year 12 cohort.

Imagine getting over a runny nose that lasted for almost twelve months: at times it seemed as though this year was NEVER going to end - an infinite “suffering” of SACs, presen-tations and the most threatening of all-exams.

If only the excitement of a fresh new locker and stationary would’ve been enough to stop me from totally wanting to, at times, scrap school.

Having said all this, however, com-pleting year 12 doesn’t come with-out its rewards. Now that I’m ac-tually finished, the down-days fall completely short of that feeling of success when finishing High School.

Being presented at that last whole school assembly a few weeks ago as the ‘CLASS OF 2010’, and register-ing the fact that my 14 years of edu-cation (including kindergarten) had come to a close, really made me feel accomplished - it’s a priceless feel-ing that I’d really want all the stu-dents who are now left at VUSC to experience. It’s so awesome having nothing much to do - I have that much spare

time that I feel guilty. Our teachers are totally right when they say:

“Work hard be-cause your break is around the cor-ner”. Finishing high school is an ac-complishment that should never be underestimated: it’s an amazing feeling which I’m sure we - year 12 students-are all proud of!

Last term both students and teachers came to school dressed in their PJ’s to raise awareness for the homeless who have nowhere to sleep. From messy bed hair, to bunny slippers and teddy bears the day was a great success with loads of people getting involved. Here are some photos from the day:

Halo: ReachBradley Watts

Halo: Reach is a first-person shooter, developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360 console. Reach was re-leased on September 14, 2010.

Reach is the final Halo title that Bungie will be developing, as the Microsoft-owned studio 343 Indus-tries will take over development for all future games in the series.

Players assume the role of Noble Six; Game play is more similar to the original Halo Combat Evolved than later games in the series. The player character is equipped with a recharging energy shield that ab-sorbs damage from weapons fire and impacts. When the energy shield is depleted, the player’s health takes a hit; when the player’s health reaches zero, the game reloads from a saved checkpoint. Health is re-plenished using health packs scat-tered throughout Reach’s levels.

In halo 3, players could wield one-use equipment power-ups that offer temporary offensive or defensive advantages. This system of single-use equipment is replaced in reach by reusable and persistent armor abilities which remain with a player until they are replaced. Among the abilities are a jetpack, active cam-

ouflage, sprint, and “armor lock”, which immobilizes the player but grants invincibility for a brief period of time. In addition to tweaks and changes to existing weapons from the halo series, Reach features new weapons fulfilling various combat roles.

Reach supports player-versus-player multiplayer through split screen on a single Xbox 360, local networks, and the Xbox Live service. Among standard multiplayer modes such as Slayer and King of the Hill, Reach includes game types new to the franchise. In “Head-hunter”, players drop skulls upon death, which other players can pick up and deposit at special zones for points.

The game follows the actions of No-ble Team, a special operations unit composed of elite super soldiers known as Spartans. Players assume the role of an unnamed new addi-

tion to the team, identified by the call sign Noble Six (whose gender is player-selectable). Noble Team’s leader is Carter-A259, a no-non-sense soldier. His second-in-com-mand, Kat-B320, has a bionic arm; together, Carter and Kat are the only two remaining original members of Noble Team. The other members include heavy weapons specialist Jorge-052, assault specialist Emile-A239, and marksman Jun-A266.

Halo: Reach grossed US$200 mil-lion on its launch day, setting a new record for the franchise. The game sold well in most territories, moving more than 3 million copies its first month in the US. Critical reception was positive; reviewers called it the best halo title.

Harry Potter & The Deathly HallowsSara Zhubi

Harry Potter has been a massive worldwide phenomenon for nearly 7 years and it is now all finally com-ing to an epic end! The 7th and last movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is cut into two parts, mak-ing it a bigger and better finale. This is the first part of the last EVER Har-ry Potter movie, which is a changing day in movie history! Okay sorry to be melodramatic people but from a loyal Harry Potter fan who has stuck by Harry through seven long books and movies this is quite exciting! So what did people think of the first instalment of the last movie? Well as far a I know all the Harry Pot-ter movies have far surpassed their expectations and I’m not just saying this as a crazy obsessed Harry Pot-ter fan, it is a well know fact people! But this time it’s different, Harry is finally made to face Voldemort in all his wrath. Doubt and uncertainty riddle his world. How can he fulfil the seemingly impossible tasks that

professor Dumbledore has left him? How can he leave everyone he loves behind to fulfil it? For the first time Harry is not within the comfort and safety of Hogwarts. He, along with his two best friends Ron and Hermione, set out to collect all the Horcruxes in an attempt to destroy Voldemort. For only when every one of these have been ruined can he really be killed. They face many perils and the friendship of the three is truly tested. Ultimate power is in Voldemort’s clasps and the only one that stands in his way is Harry Potter. The ending of the first part leaves you on the edge of your seat with a burning desire to see what happens next and how the story of Harry Potter ends. It is a movie to fill you with fear, hatred, love and joy, excitement and anticipation, and I for one highly recommend it. So if there is nothing planned this weekend guys, by all means go and watch it!

Directed by: Jeff TremaineWritten by: Preston LacyStarring: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Bam Margera, Wee Man, Preston Lacy, Danger Aaron, Ryan DunnRating:

Since the release of Jackass 2, Johnny Knoxville and his posse have faded from the public eye a little bit. Each of them went through their own problems while some others tried unsuccessfully to further their act-ing careers. It seemed like their time in the spotlight was running out, so before it could completely close that chapter in their lives, Johnny Knox-ville gathered in the crew for one last clash.

The movie is put together by a series

of hilarious yet dangerous stunts that will leave you gasping for air. As far as the stunts go, they are still very enjoyable, although some might say that they are running out of ideas. There’s nothing wrong with seeing more of the same juvenile, self-destructive lunacy. There are many memorable moments such as the high-five gag, the fake go-rilla rampage, the jet engine wind tunnel, and Steve-O’s port-o-potty launch at the end is definitely a suf-ficiently jaw-dropping finale.

Even though the energy wasn’t as strong this time around, you will be entertained the whole way through, as you will rarely get bored at a par-ticular sketch and always eager to find out what crazy antics they will do next.

Although it was probably the weak-est of the three movies, whether you’re gritting your teeth, covering your eyes or chortling in unison with the rest of the audience, Jack-ass 3 still retains its hilarious charm and watch ability that you’ve come to expect from Johnny Knoxville and his crew.

Paranormal Activity 2Jenny Phan

Director – Tod WilliamsScreenplay writers – Michael R. Per-ry (also story writer), Christopher B. Landon and Tom PabstFilm Writer – Oren Peli Main Actors – Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat and Molly EphraimYear – 2010Rating -

Paranormal Activity 2 is the second part to the horrifying film Para-normal Activity. The film includes many shocking scenes that will make the hairs on your arms stick up. It contains moments where your heart completely races - being afraid of what may happen next.

The movie is about a demon who seeks the first son within the fam-ily tree, and to get what it wants it doesn’t stop at just scaring the fam-ily.

Throughout the movie, it was main-ly about a demon trying to take the soul of the child named hunter. It all starts with the theory that someone in their family once traded their first born son in the family line to the demon for either power or wealth. So the reasons for its actions are made clear, yet the things the demon pulls is terrifying to watch,

as its tricks become more horrid as the movie continues.

An intriguing part of the film was the way the demon actually pos-sessed a person. It can completely take over a person’s body and mind, making them into a more zombie like state. Unfortunately the only way to stop a person from being in the state is to transfer it to a blood relation.

Even though the movie was not as great as many would like, it is an okay movie to watch with some mates. The film was quite boring at first but as the film continues it becomes slightly more interesting from wondering why they were haunted to how they deal with the unnatural happenings around them. It is more recommended for older ages as it contains scenes that can be very scary!

So he goes to his truck, takes out a baseball bat, and starts busting her windows and beating her car. He looks back to see that she’s laughing. He’s really mad now, so he takes his knife and slices her tires. He turns around and she’s laughing so hard, she’s about to fall down. We weren’t joking when we said this was a totally student created magazine. So this means we need some of you talented readers to become contributors.

Is there an issue we should cover? Have you got a story to tell? Seen a movie or band that you think everyone should know about? Found some sweet cheat codes to your favourite game? Let us know. Photos, artwork, graffiti, random drawings are all needed to fill our pages, so send some in.

So write to us, tell us what you want and how you want it. Send us an email, keep your school magazine all about you.

You’re probably wondering why the magazine has a “?” on the front

cover? That’s because we haven’t given it a name yet!!

We want you (yes you) to come up with a name for your school maga-

zine.

The winning entry will become the official name for the magazine and

appear on every edition (there may even be prizes involved!)
