Hello Members and Friends, This is your gentle reminder about our 2017 “2020 Vision” Giving Drive! We have an exciting and easy way to let us know what your annual contribution will be for our campaign. At the end of this letter there is a link to a personal message from Reverend Andy, a link with suggested giving levels, and a link to the VUU website where you will be one click away from making your annual pledge/gift. Many thanks to those who have already responded! You rock! In addition to your pledge or gift amount, we are asking for information so we can understand what your preferences are for when you give, a place for comments and links to sign up for automatic giving. Automatic giving through your bank checking or savings account is the best way to give to VUU. This would need to be set up on your bank web site through your bill paying option. If you need help we have folks who will be able to help you get this set up. Please make a note in the comments section of the online pledge form if you would like help. We also have links on the pledge page to set up your automatic giving through the VUU website from your checking, savings, or credit card. The difference is that these charge a small fee for each transaction. Either way, we appreciate setting your gifts up automatically. Our “2020 Vision” is well on the way to becoming realized. Currently our Board of Directors and our Minister are taking all the input from members and friends, to identify the ways we will be moving forward to put the vision of where and who we want to be into practice. Part of our vision is having the resources in place to support the goals. Some practical ways we do this are making sure we have the infrastructure in place to support the vision. This includes a home for our congregation with all the upkeep that entails, a staff to do the basic work of crafting and implementing our programs, a fiscally responsible structure that makes sure we have funds set aside as a safety net and supports our faith on a regional and national level among other things. Lastly, although a pledge drive talks about monetary donations, it is also important to acknowledge donations of your talents and time. In our fast paced, multi-tasking world there are lots of things competing for our time and money, and that balance between the practical and spiritual is hard to maintain. As a member for over 20 years I know that our VUU community is a supportive and nurturing place where all are welcome. Take some time to reflect on what VUU means in your life and pledge or give what you can accordingly.

Religious Education January 2017
Dates to remember:
Sunday, Jan 1, 2017 – Multi-generational worship service – everyone meets in the
sanctuary, no RE classes.
Jan 1, 5 – 9 pm – mUUvie night for high school youth
Sunday, Jan 8 – Sunday morning religious education (RE) classes resume. Nursery will
be open at 8:30 am, HS and MS youth report to their classes at 10:30 am. Preschool –
5th graders begin in the sanctuary with their families.
Jan 22, 12:30 pm – Orientation for 9th & 10th grade youth interested in the Coming of
Age program, rooms 1 & 2 in education complex
Coming of Age (COA) – 6 month long program for youth in 9th &
10th grades (dates and fees tentative at this time)
Mandatory parent AND youth orientation – Sunday, January 22nd, 12:30 pm
Mentors and participants meet at a kick-off picnic on February 5th.
Opening retreat at VUU Feb 10th – 11th.
February 19 through April 30: weekly Sunday workshops from 12:30 to 3 pm (some dates excluded)
Coming of Age banquet will be May5th or 6th and the congregational ceremony
on May 7th
Coming of Age uses principles of Unitarian Universalism to highlight the transition from
childhood to the teenage years and emerging adulthood. The program takes advantage
of the diversity of Unitarian Universalist ideas and principles to give a foundation for a
lifelong search for truth and meaning, and a commitment to service, justice, peace and
environmental stewardship.
Program cost - $225 per youth (scholarship applications available)
Program finale – Heritage trip to Boston – Tentative dates: June 1 – 6, 2017 (Cost and
itinerary to be discussed at orientation.)
Mentors needed: Each youth will be paired with a mentor from the congregation.
Mentors meet independently with participants at least monthly for activities of their
choosing. Adults interested in mentoring should contact Marci, [email protected].

Great Books discussion group
In January, the VUU Great Books Discussion Group will continue our series on Parent
and Child. Our next readings are "Gwen" and "Somewhere, Belgium" by Jamaica
Kincaid. We will be meeting in Room 5, on the 4th Sunday of January - January 22 -
from 7pm to 9pm.
All are welcome. Please join us! Our readings are usually short - these are only 15 and
16 pages long - but always lead to fun and interesting discussions. Contact Kevin

Free Ideas (Mind in the Heart of the Matter)
Come digest some Free Ideas with us, exploring Mind as it presents itself all the way
down into the very Heart of the Matter. With this Mind/Matter interface as a focus, we’ll
continue our discussion series which began as Spirituality and the Quantum Leap, with
no prior attendance require. We will meet at 7 pm, on the first Monday of every month
from November through May, in VUU education complex room 5.
Drawing on great thinkers and contributing our own thoughts, we’ll discuss and discover
our own personal and shared metaphysics. We’ll also see how a renaissance of
Panpsychist perspectives occurring in scientific circles can bridge the seeming gap with
spirituality, and has the potential to improve people’s lives.
Oh, and there will be snacks. Food for thought, and for … eating.

The Dalai Lama and Friends Workshop
An opportunity to learn from the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan and
modern Buddhist teachers is offered each Sunday from 9-10AM in the
RE complex, room 5. There is a reading or recorded audio or video
teaching, then group discussion. Everyone is welcome! Various topics are discussed,
such as 'how to be more compassionate' or 'dealing with anger' or 'how to meditate'.
If you come early there is also meditation from 8:30-9. Done at 10 - plenty of time to get

The N.S.G. Book Club is open to all members, visitors, and friends of VUU who enjoy
reading and discussing a variety of books. We meet once a month at the home of
Johnnie Godfrey in Tempe (near Baseline Rd. and the 101).
The January meeting will be on January 19 at 7:15 p.m. The January book is Moral
Minority – Our Skeptical Founding Fathers by Brooke Allen. The author looks back at
the late eighteenth century and shows decisively that the United States was founded not
on Christian principles at all but on Enlightenment ideas. The book presents a powerful
case that the unique legal framework the Founding Fathers created was designed
according to the humanist ideals of Enlightenment thinkers. Moral Minority makes an
impassioned and scintillating contribution to the ongoing debate more heated now than
ever before over the separation of church and state and the role (or lack thereof) of
religion in government.

MUSIC NOTES
Thanks to all who made the music so special during our recent holiday season! From Karen Mundo who
led the Holiday Band/Orchestra, to the Chalice Singers (VUU's Children's Choir) to Jill Khaleghi and
Michael Lewis, our wonderful pianists, to the Adult Choir and Bell Choir (led by Joan Bundy), we were
many times surrounded by glorious sounds! And there was also music behind-the-scenes. The Voices
Lifted Singers sang at several Care Centers based in private homes, at Desert Haven, an assisted nursing
facility in Phoenix, for a congregant recovering from surgery, at two inpatient hospice units, and for
“Stories of Light,” an interfaith event at Community Christian Church in Tempe. Live singing seems to
bring love, light, and a certain human quality to most situations, and I thank the wonderful ladies of
Voices Lifted for their caring presence and beautiful tones.
May your hopes and dreams for the New Year come true, and may we all have the courage and strength
to continue to bring light and love to this hurting world!

During January I will be leading a four-week “Heart Circle” group in East Mesa focusing on building community for a better world. We have talked about eventually being a “Satellite Congregation” and having smaller UU communities connected to VUU elsewhere in the Valley. But how to start and how to build capacity for such a thing? One way is to identify people who live in a geographical area and provide an initial program to help them get to know each other better and begin to identify needs in their local area.
On Sunday evenings January 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 6-8 PM I will lead a gathering of VUU members and friends in East Mesa. We will sing, share personal journeys and dreams for the future, and have a potluck meal together. But we need someone to open their home to 10-20 people for these four evenings! RESOLVE to be a part of FUUNd Together 2017!
FUUNd Together is VUU’s largest annual fundraiser. Each year between November and early January, FUUNd loving members of our congregation sign up to host events, give lessons, and provide services that can be purchased by VUU members and friends at a silent auction held Sunday mornings during February.
Last year’s auction offered casual and gourmet dinners, luncheons, pool parties, movie nights, hikes, bird watching, pumpkin carving, jewelry making, card playing, museum visits, bike tours, writing services, history discussions, swimming lessons, a cookie exchange, dog sitting, and many other very special activities.
Please visit us at the FUUNd Together table after the services. Our FUUNd loving team will happily share pictures of past FUUNd events, let you browse past FUUNd catalogs, listen to
your ideas, and even help you come up with an idea. And, you can schedule your event to take place any time between April 2017 and March 2018.

Promoting Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
White Privilege Workshop – Feb 5th, noon – Patrick Whorton Facilitator What is “white privilege”? How does it affect you? Why should you care? White privilege affects everyone. If we want to support our sisters and brothers of color we need to understand how “white privilege” works and how to address this difficult and sometimes uncomfortable topic. Please join us after services on February 5th, as we provide a safe environment for us to discuss this complex concept. Patrick Whorton will be our facilitator. 50 Week Action Plan The 50 Week Action Plan will provide one or two ideas each week for progressive social action showing continued support for public policy and policy proposals that contribute to a more socially-just society. We stand opposed to public policy and policy proposals that are disrespectful to any group or person, anti-democratic, unfair especially to the least advantaged among us, and harmful to the web of life on our planet. Garden for a Good Cause! Garden team members are needed. You do not need to be an expert gardener to be on the team! A wide range of talent is needed, and the desire to help. We meet on the first Sunday of the month in the office building at 12:00pm after the Sunday service. Compost your kitchen scraps, shredded paper and raked leaves, every Sunday by adding them to our composting system. Place your waste in the compost barrels by the NE corner of the parking lot. The compost is a vital part of our soil amendments. (grass and leaves should be free of pet waste and can be placed beside the barrels) Would you like to harvest vegetables on Sunday mornings in January? Usually from 9:30 to 10:15am. Let me know if you would like to be notified by email. ([email protected]) Would you like to deliver vegetables on Monday morning? We need a driver who is free Monday mornings to take produce picked on Sunday to TCAA near University Drive and McClintock. Contact Karen Stucke ([email protected])
Black Lives Matter Lending Library
The VUU Library has a Black Lives Matter corner. Feel free to borrow the books, cd's and dvd's for all ages.
As our selection is small PLEASE RETURN THESE ITEMS within the month. We would like to have them circulated among as many members as possible. If you have materials that you would like to add to the collection, you are welcome.
Paz de Cristo – Serving Meals to People in Need
Fridays for January 13th, February 10th and March 10th still have openings for volunteers
to help prepare and serve dinner to 150+ guests at VUU’s focus charity, Paz de Cristo
Community Outreach in Mesa. To volunteer, please add your name to the list on the
clipboard at the back of the VUU sanctuary, or contact Pat Flahart, Andrew Herrmann or
Rebekah Thomas at [email protected]. Families are welcome – kids must be at
least 12 years old.

Mark Your Calendars - Justice District Assembly (DA) March 31 – April 2nd 2017
Looking for a place of safety and away to make a difference in these troubled times?
If the answer is yes, then Justice DA may be the answer for you, this 3 day event is
described below. Registration will open on January 1st 2017, but detailed information is
available now.

Justice DA 2017 will be immigration themed, and will begin in Tucson AZ at the UU
Church of Tucson with the keynote address Friday evening. Instead of workshops,
delegates and attendees can sign up for around 30 Immersion Experiences near or
across the border in Mexico. The business meeting will be after dinner Saturday and will
be coordinated from several locations. DA will end Sunday morning with a worship
service at the border. Registration for this event will be $100 before Feb 1st 2017, and
$125 after that. Part of this registration will be an on-line tool to help you better
understand which activity is right for you. Activities on Saturday will originate from 3
locations, the UU congregations in Tucson, Amato and Serra Vista (Sky Island). Each
activity will typically only have 10 openings, so there will be a real advantage to

Mark Your Calendars - Justice District Assembly (DA) March 31 – April 2nd 2017 Looking for a place of safety and away to make a difference in these troubled times?
If the answer is yes, then Justice DA may be the answer for you, this 3-day event is described below:
Registration will open on January 1st 2017, but detailed information is available now.

Justice DA 2017 will be immigration themed, and will begin in Tucson AZ at the UU Church of
Tucson with the keynote address Friday evening. Instead of workshops, delegates and
attendees can sign up for around 30 Immersion Experiences near or across the border in
Mexico. The business meeting will be after dinner Saturday and will be coordinated from
several locations. DA will end Sunday morning with a worship service at the
border. Registration for this event will be $100 before Feb 1st 2017, and $125 after that. Part
of this registration will be an on-line tool to help you better understand which activity is right
for you. Activities on Saturday will originate from 3 locations, the UU congregations in Tucson,
Amato and Serra Vista (Sky Island). Each activity will typically only have 10 openings, so there
will be a real advantage to registering early! If you have questions, follow the link above or ask
