Issue 50 Summer 2016 Village Voice With many thanks to our sponsors: Hanson & Ardingly Activity Centre Thirty years at Ardingly It all started with three Wayfarers and six Topper sailing dinghies. So where are we now? Dinghy sailing continues to be the largest activity with children from 6 years old starting their sailing in Oppys, a stable boat like a bath tub! The courses follow the Royal Yachting Association schemes and progress from the beginning stages right through to Instructor. It is great to see young people develop from nervous beginners to become confident Instructors who have a passion for water sports and the joy of teaching. Adult courses continue to be popular, with most saying, ”I have always wanted to sail” or “I wish I had done this earlier.” So why not make time and do a course now? You will find it stimulating, exciting and relaxing. With courses in Windsurfing, Kayaking, and Canoeing there are lots of way to get afloat. Children’s parties are great fun - but don’t let the kids have all the fun any group of six can make their own party. If you are short of time just come and hire a sit-on-top kayak - there are singles or doubles and no past experience is needed. Get Mum and Dad to have a race against the kids or just have a paddle and enjoy the reservoir. Stand up paddle boards have been the big new thing and they are so popular, great as a stress buster, good for your core stability and, if you are well balanced, try doing yoga on them! That still leaves triathlon, rowing, fishing, raft building or just walking the dog, all on you door step. Now you deserve an ice cream or cup of tea and cake by the waterside café. Hanson & Ardingly Activity Centre

Thirty years at Ardingly It all started with three Wayfarers and six Topper sailing dinghies.

For more information

Message From Our Parish Council Welcome to our summer issue of the Village Voice – although the weather earlier this week felt much more like autumn than summer.  I hope it doesn’t last!  This year has flown by and there have been a few developments across the village: we have started to see the houses at Standgrove start to take shape; on the recreation ground we continue to develop our plans for the refurbishment for the pavilion; and we now have seen plans for the development of The Oak into residential properties.

At the May Parish Council Meeting I stood down as chair and proposed Mick Brixey to take my place.  As a result Mick and Derek Stutchbury as vice chair will lead the council going forward.  It has been an honour to chair the council over the past four years and we have achieved a lot including delivering our Neighbourhood Plan and establishing allotments in the village.  I believe that we should see regular change in the leadership of the council to ensure new ideas can come to the fore and for the council to remain vibrant.  I wish Mick and Derek the very best in their roles.  This summer we will be holding our summer fete on September 11th so please do let us know if you’d like to have a stall or table – I look forward to seeing you there!

National Beacon And Upcoming Tea Party to Celebrate Queen’s 90th Birthday

The Ardingly Parish Council set light to one of more than 900 beacons lit across the country and abroad to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

Members of the Army Cadet Force took beacons to the top of the four highest peaks in t h e U n i t e d Kingdom England - B e n N e v i s i n Scotland, Mount Snowdon in Wales, Sca fe l l P ike in E n g l a n d , a n d Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.

T h e A r d i n g l y beacon was built by the South of E n g l a n d Showground team and many villagers

joined in the fun with sausages and drinks provided by the Parish Council and a lovely mild evening.

The next opportunity to celebrate will be 18th June with a Village Street Tea Party on the slip road by Hapstead Hall, from   2.30pm - 4.30pm.  All residents are invited and  for more details see posters nearer the date or contact Barbara Monk 892 857 or Deb Ruse 892 717.

This is being organised by local residents with the backing of the Parish Council. Tea and cake will be provided and with this in mind they would welcome the offer of cakes o r a d o n a t i o n towards running costs.

Traffic Calming Update The Parish Council is currently working with WSCC to finalise a traffic calming scheme for Ardingly. The priorities are pedestrian safety, speed control and maintaining a rural theme in the village. Progress has been slow mainly due to achieving funding.

We have now been allocated £33,000 in the 2016/2017 WSCC Integrated Works Programme for the design element of the scheme and then £87,953 to deliver the project in 2017/2018.

We have set up three resident focus groups covering College Road, High Street and Lindfield Road so options can be discussed. Limited funds will mean that all ideas will not be possible. We are working with the council to develop the most effective measures to achieve our goal of a safer village.

You might remember the Speed Indicator machine (SID) that monitored speed around the village in March/April. We had a lot of positive comments about its effect on driver behaviour (people started to slow down having been reminded that they were driving too fast!). Unfortunately, we were unable to use any of the recorded data from the machine due to a data collection error as a result of it being an old machine.

Because of the importance of the data and public feedback, we have determined it appropriate to purchase a new SID machine. In the interim, did you noticed the speed strips across College Road and the Lindfield Road? WSCC were collecting new accurate data for analysis and we will have more news soon.

School Notes

The Road to Rio… …started at St. Peter’s on Monday 11th April when the children and staff returned to school

for a day of Brazilian themed carnival dance!

Th e A n c i e n t G r e e k s , countries and continents of the world, African animals, Asian cultures and obviously South America are just some of the areas of learning being explored as part of our

w h o l e s c h o o l 'Olympic themed' topic this term!

The children won’t be able to travel to Rio unfortunately; howeve r we do h a v e s o m e

wonderful highlights planned! These include an art exhibition, opening ceremony for our St. Peter’s School Olympics, a Beach Party and a n O l y m p i c t h e m e d production! Staff have also planned a number of extra-curricular activities for the

children to further their learning outside of the classroom including kayaking at the reservoir, a visit to London Zoo, supporting Wakehurst with their ephemeral art installation and a visit to see the London Symphony Orchestra.

Our Year 6 pupils are already well into their last term at St. Peter’s and as we approach the end of their Primary School days, it’s a wonderful opportunity for them to reflect upon some of their most memorable moments of the past seven years. As I finish writing this report they have just begun a week facing the new National Key Stage 2 tests however, I hope that they have more exciting memories than them. Our ‘Golden Key to Good Learning Behaviour’ states that we expect all pupils at St. Peter’s to always try their best and our curriculum is built upon providing learners with opportunities to explore their many skills and talents that are not necessarily measured through a Mathematics, Reading, Grammar or Spelling test. We will be incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils, whatever they achieve. Following the week of testing, there are a number of unique events planned just for them including a visit to Fun Pots, a stoolball match against the parents, auditions for lead roles in our end of term production, visiting Worth Abbey for a special Leavers’ Service and leading their own service at St. Peter’s Church on the last day of term.

Speaking of skills and talents beyond Mathematics and English, it’s been a while since we reported on St. Peter’s sporting accolades! For such a small school, our girls and boys have many opportunities to be involved and compete in a wide range of sports! Football, netball, tag rugby, basketball, swimming, cross-country running and fencing are just some of the local and county competitions the children have been involved in. It has been a particularly good season for our hockey team who made it through to the County finals and two weeks ago won the NEARS locality competition hosted at Worth School! Over the coming weeks pupils will be representing us in tennis, cricket, stoolball and even tri-golf! Good luck competitors in all of our forthcoming fixtures and tournaments!

Pre-School Notes With the chilly weather behind us the children are looking forward to spending more time playing outside in sunshine!

It is a glorious time of the year with so much to learn and experience. The children have been learning about birds by building a life sized bird’s nest with string,

making bird puppets, pegging feathers and practicing their numbers by matching numbered eggs. They have also been learning about the life-cycle of a frog, going to the dentist, gardening and health and beauty.

How did you celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday? Well the children enjoyed making crowns, carriages, playing in a castle with knights and having a “posh” tea party.

The above is only a brief overview of what the children are having fun doing and how they are learning; if you are looking to place your child in a pre-school and wish to find out more then please do get in touch.

It is worth mentioning that we are a charity and appreciate all of the village’s help and support. In the coming term, we will be planting ‘gardens’ with the children and any donations of any plants, pots and seeds are greatly appreciated.

Additionally we are organising a fundraising opportunity due to the huge success of the 5km Colour Run in Brighton last year. We are again going to enter to raise funds to support the Pre-School. If you are keen to take part on September 17th or wish to donate then please do contact Lucie and she will pass your enquiry on to our event organiser.

Street Lane Parking As residents are probably aware, the Car Park in the centre of the village is owned and managed by Mid Sussex District Council. They have recently been monitoring the parking in the Car Park and we have been informed that some tickets have been issued as

vehicles have been found parking over the 23 hour period.

The Parish Council have received some comments from residents who have noted that cars are being parked permanently in the bays and this is not acceptable under the terms of the Mid Sussex District Council parking policy. We appreciate that parking in any village is a difficult problem, but please be mindful of the parking policy when using the Car Park. Thank you for your understanding.

A r d i n g l y C o u n t r y Market every Thursday Did you know that Ardingly has a country market which is held at Hapstead Hall in the centre of the village with ample free parking from 10am til 11am every Thursday morning?

There are a variety of lovely things to buy including fresh home grown vegetables, eggs, venison, cakes, biscuits, fudge, sausage rolls, savoury pasties and pies as well as honey, jams, marmalade and chutneys and also home baked bread and fresh apple juice. They also sell garden plants, bulbs and fresh garden flowers when available. There is now a new craft table selling all sorts of beautiful craft items at reasonable prices. Ideal for handmade cards and gifts. Orders for any items you would like can be made, and all produce is fresh and can be frozen.

There is a friendly atmosphere and tea and coffee and biscuits are all served for just 50p if you fancy a sit down and a chat! This is a lovely provision for the local villagers and they are keen to have everyone know they are there every week; local ladies cooking and baking for you, plus a great place to meet people and enjoy a pause in your week. Do drop in for a look around and expect a very warm welcome.

St. Peters Church Notes Take note that Sunday services at St. Peters have taken a new form and every first Sunday there is ‘Sunday@Centre.’ This is a Café style church

(a fresh expression) which is informal and friendly with coffee, croissants and relaxed conversation about life and faith, including fun for children, ‘Messy Church.’ The next services are on 10.15am Sunday 5th June and Sunday 3rd July in the summer, but are ongoing throughout the year.

Additionally, the St. Peter’s Choir is involved in a special Evensong service held at 6:30pm on Sunday 26th June in the Chapel of St Saviour, Ardingly College. This free concert will be sung by the joint choirs of St. Peter’s Church in Ardingly, the Prep and Senior school choirs of Ardingly College and members of the Ardingly Choral Society. Music will include Wood in E flat, Hear my Prayer by Mendelssohn and the Old Hundredth by Ralph Vaughan Williams. All are very welcome.

We say Goodbye to ‘Mr. Ardingly,’ Clive Izard It is with much regret that we have to report the death of Clive H Izard MBE. He was a lifelong resident of the village and died in the Princess Royal Hospital after a short illness on the 28th April, aged 96.

Clive was born to Mary Izard (nee Holman) and Joe on the 27th December 1919 a t Downshi re Cottages, Street Lane. He could trace his Ardingly roots on his mother’s side back many generations and we can safely say he was definitely a man of Ardingly. The family were Congregational Church members and he was registered in the Chapel on the 21st March 1920. His father told him he was named after Clive of India.

From Downshire Cottages, the family moved to Newcroft Cottages, Little London and then to West View Cottages before in 1936 to The Croft in Church Lane.

He left school in 1937 and found work with an estate agent in Hassocks, but felt that war was imminent and joined the RAF in January 1939. Most of his service was in the Middle East and he was mentioned in dispatches on two occasions.

With his wife Peggy and son John he moved into the new house in Gowers Close and became involved in local football administration and the Parish Council. He became Parish Clerk in 1956 and continued with this responsibility for over 30 years. He represented the Parish at the public inquiries for The Showground and The Reservoir. In 1960 he was elected as the village representative to the then Cuckfield Rural Council a task he continued for over 30 years and sat as a Justice of the Peace at the Haywards Heath Magistrates Court for 20 years. He was awarded the MBE for services to the community in 2000.

Clive had a great love for local football and cricket and for 10 years was secretary to The Sussex County Football Association. Prior to his retirement in 1983 he worked at Wakehurst and for the Bursar at Ardingly College.

Until recent months he would be seen every Saturday at the Recreation Ground watching the local teams. For the last 16 years Clive was the very active archivist for the History Society and his knowledge and interest in the village will be irreplaceable. The village is a much poorer place without Clive and we send our sincere condolences to John, Nina, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Profile on Councillor Rob Lawson My name is Rob Lawson and I have been a member of the Parish Council for around 18 months. I am a member of the Planning Committee and Recreation Ground Committee.

I was born in Ardingly as was my mother and grandfather, in fact my ancestor George Williams (my mother’s maiden name) travelled from Rochester and settled in Ardingly in the mid 18th Century. There has been a ‘Williams’ in Ardingly continuously since that time.

I attended the original primary school and then to the secondary school in Haywards Heath. On leaving school I trained as an electrician with the South Eastern Electricity Board working for them for over 32 years, eventually leaving as the Customer Services Manager in Seeboard Retail. I moved onto British Gas as an Area Manager in the Electrical Services Department. In 2001 I started work as the Caretaker at St Peters Primary School which I consider the most enjoyable job I ever had and spent 13 very happy years there.

I am now retired and enjoy gardening and walking in the country with my wife Bonny who was also born in Ardingly. I try to get to the gym at least once a week and have been involved with Ardingly Football Club for over 45 years.

I would urge and encourage everyone that lives in Ardingly to get involved and help one of the village organisations.
