The Fox is a class A0 hatchback model. It is low-cost, with simple solutions, variable and with an exclusive design. The basis is the platform of the Polo (PQ24); this means that the Fox inherits the best with regard to construction process, safety, comfort and technology.

The chassis number (vehicle ID number) is stamped onto the floor plate under
the rear bench seat.
Vehicle type plate
The vehicle type plates are on the left suspension strut and on the spare wheel recess.
The Fox has the type designation 5Z0.

The Fox is among the “best in class” with regard to spaciousness and inner functionality.
In order to maintain a maximum use of the interior with regard to the comfort of the passengers, the “H” point (center of gravity, size of the driver) – a reference value for how comfortable a vehicle is – was modified by 60 mm in upward direction and 29 mm in forward direction compared to the other Volkswagen models.
This means that the driver can sit in a more vertical position. As if in a comfortable armchair with room for stretching the legs.
If one raises the driver's seat, there is even more room for the front passengers.
These changes were possible due to the vehicle's height (1,544 mm) and the space for the head (995 mm) which results in the best interior of this category.

This car was developed to offer passengers maximum comfort with a higher roof and more room for the head (based on the new market orientation).

If the rear bench seat is moved right to the back, this gives the front passengers plenty of room for the legs so that it is possible to accommodate three adults relatively comfortably. In this position the luggage compartment has a capacity of 260 l.
If the bench is moved forwards (by 15 cm), the capacity of the luggage compartment is 353 l, which is the largest of its category.
The back rest of the rear bench seat can also be folded, thus increasing the capacity of the luggage compartment to 675 l.

The main feature of the VW FOX is without doubt its flexibility, with the focus on ARS the rear bench seat that is adjustable in longitudinal direction
A positive aspect that is non-existent in the group of direct competitors. The many options of the adjustable rear bench seat enable the flexible use of the luggage compartment, either to the benefit of the passengers or to have more room for luggage.

The Fox use the same gearbox as the Polo. The transmission ratio was modified accordingly to fit the engine.
A magnesium alloy is used for the construction that ensures a low-weight construction.
Gear clutch mechanism of the “rocker arm fork” type that ensures the easy and precise shifting of gears. The gearbox is controlled via cables and the gearbox drive is hydraulic, resulting in:
the soft and precise shifting of gears,
and the reduction of noises.

Front wheel suspension
The McPherson front axle is used in the VW Fox. It is similar to that of the Polo.

The power-assisted steering is standard for the FOX with 55 kW petrol or diesel engine. Optionally available is the VW Fox 1.2 l 40 kW with power steering. A hydraulic pump with an electric motor is used for improving steering characteristics and reducing fuel consumption.

At the front axle, the VW Fox has ventilated disk brakes in the following dimensions:

The rear wheels have a drum brake system with a diameter of 200 mm and a thickness of 40 mm.
The Fox is standard-equipped with ABS. An ESP system is optionally available. The ABS system 8 weighs only 1.6 kg and has a 128 kb processor. The previous system is the ABS 5.7 that weighed 2.5 kg and had a 32 kb processor.
The new ABS system 8 has a larger processing capacity, weighs less and is low-priced.

Headlight range control at the steering column switch.
Light switch is not a rotary switch but also on the steering column switch.
The dipped beam is activated by turning the light switch. The high beam is activated by pulling the steering column switch towards the body.
The electric headlight range control is for infinitely adjusting the headlights to suit the vehicle's load condition. This avoids dazzling drivers of vehicles moving in the opposite direction more than necessary. At the same time, the driver has the best possible vision due to the correct headlight setting.
The headlights can only be adjusted when the high beam is switched on. The headlight range cannot be controlled for the high beam.
The headlight range control has 3 stages and the basic position 0.
