1. Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2014

Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2014 is organised for a third time in a row and aims to be established as the best cycling event in Cyprus for professional as well as amateur cyclists. Three days full of cycling action, three courses alongside the most beautiful areas of Cyprus!

Apart from being a cycling event, this race is, at the same time, a philanthropic and social event since it supports the Larnaca Anti-Drug Association (SYKANA).

2. Groups and Categories

The participants will be divided into 2 groups. Group 1 will consist of participant who will compete for the best possible time in the timed sections. This group will be subdivided into 2 subdivisions, Comp where only those holding a license from either Cyprus or any other national Cycling Federation can register (applies only to JUNIORS, MEN & WOMEN categories) and Cycling For All category in which all non-license riders can participate. If someone wishes to participate in the Comp category then he/she can contact the organizer to issue a temporary license for this event only. All riders in the Masters categories are not divided into Licensed or non-Licensed.

In Group 2, the riders who will participate will simply aim in covering the distances without timing constraints.

3. Registration – Number and Equipment Pick Up

The registration office will open on Wednesday, 26th March 2014 at Presse Cafe in Stavrou, Nicosia for all participants who cannot travel to Limassol the next day. The registration office will be open from 10:00 am until 16:00 pm (one hour lunch break between 13:00pm – 14:00pm). To locate Press-cafe on the map click here

The registration office on Thursday, 27th March will open at in Limassol, opposite Enaerios parking lot which will be the start area for Stage 1. For the map click here

At the registration office you would be able to pick up your number or any other equipment/materials related to the event, as well as information in regards to the 3-day event. ALL participants are requested to pick up their numbers either personally or through a representative.

For the participants staying in Paphos and are unable to pick up their race packs, the organizers have arranged for registrations to open on Thursday, 27th March between 17:00 and 18:00 pm in the afternoon at Athena Room in Almyra Spa hotel.

4. Parking Spaces in Limassol

For those participants who will arrive in Limassol on start day by car, you can use the Enaerios Parking place to park your car during the entire 3-day event. The parking lot is not guarded.

In this area, on the first day of the event, there will be the organizer’s vans so that you can place your luggage to be transferred at your hotel in Paphos.

LuggageOn the first day of the event, and upon arrival, we kindly ask you to place your luggage in the vans which we will provide for that reason. For the participants who would spend a few nights in Limassol prior to the race we have arranged for a van to collect your luggage from the hotels Mediterranean Beach Hotel and Kapetanios Odyssia early in the morning before the start of the race on Friday, 28th March. You will be notified by your hotel reception for the exact time.

On the last day of the Tour ALL luggage must be loaded on the bus between 13:00-13:45.

Each participant is responsible to load their luggage on the bus!

6. Routes and Signs

The event’s routes will be signed with the following signs/arrows. The following arrows will be located in visible locations throughout the route where a change in course is needed or in cases where there might be more than one available routes to follow.

After the finish line there would be a special sign, ‘TΟ HOTEL’, indicating the route which will lead back to the hotel.

7. Escort Cars/ Service

For both Groups (Group 1 and 2) there will be Volkswagen cars which will accompany them and in which you would be able to find wheels for service (in some cars) and water. The drivers of those cars will be at your dispose for any assistance.

Two of those cars will be following the leading groups so that they could provide immediate assistance in case of emergency. Of course, the cars might not be there right after the flat, therefore, we ask for you to be understanding. Neutral Service cars are for everyone!

For all those of you who will have their own wheels we suggest you give them to the service cars that will be leading. Always have something distinctive on the wheels you will submit. Best practice is to mark your number and name on the rim or on a sticker which you will attach on the wheel.

Feeding of the riders will be allowed only in extreme cases from the left side of the road and the person who will provide the water must be out of the car. The car must be parked outside the road

8. Start, Finish, Timed SectionsStart and Finish area for each stage are as follows:

First Stage: Start at Enaerios Parking place in Limassol and finish in Paphos

Second Stage: Start in Paphos Harbor and Finish in Kouklia

Third stage: Start at Paphos Harbor and finish in Tsada.

All participants in Group 1 will have to cover the distances between start and finish on bike.

In timed sections every participant would be competing for the best time. All riders must comply with the Road Traffic Regulations. There will be safety personnel for the event, however, the road is for everyone. Above all, Safety for everyone.

TIMED SECTIONS

Stage 1: Start in/ Limassol at 11:30. Timed section starts at 18km in Kourion. Distance of the timed section is 38km and the Finish of the timed section is in KoukliaStage 2: Start in Paphos Harbor at 09:30 together. Refreshments and start of timed Section at 14.5km, by Nikoklia / Kouklia. Distance of the timed section is 44.2km and the finish of the timed section is after Malia VillageStage 3: Start in Paphos Harbour at 08:30. start of timed section is 15km and the distance of the timed section is 30km. Finish of the timed section is in Kathikas

The winner of the race in each category – as it is mentioned in our website- would be the rider with the shortest overall time from all three timed sections of the event. It is implied that each rider must cover the whole distance of the event.

10. First Stage

The first stage will start from Limassol, Enaerios Parking Place. The registration office on start day will be open for ONLY ONE HOUR from 08:30am until 09:30am for the last number pickups (only for those participants who are unable to pick up their numbers on the scheduled registration days)

At 10:30 there will be a short recap for the day’s race and at 10:50 everyone will have to be in front of the Stage where the presentation will be held.

RouteStarting from Limassol, Enaerios Parking Place we will head towards Kourion where we stop before the timed section starts. The 10-minute rule will apply according to which participants in Group 1 will be given 10 minutes to prepare for the timed section of the route. From there the first timed sections of the Tour will start.

The speed throughout the timed sections of the race is open. The leading car will be in front of the leading group of riders whereas there will be 15 other service/assistance cars will be situated in between the riders. Also, the riders will be accompanied by Harley Davidson motorcyclists.

The timed section’s route, as above mentioned, will start from Kourion, head towards Avdimou, Pissouri, Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s birthplace) and finish in Kouklia.

Signs for the finish of the timed section will be situated at 5 km, 3km, 1km, 500m, 300m, 200m and 100m.

From there the riders must ride to their hotels in Pafos.

Signs will be placed by the organisers leading you back to the hotel after the finish line.

Upon your arrival at the hotel you will be able to collect your luggage and go to your rooms.

11. Second Stage

The race will start in front of Pafos Castle next to the harbour 1km away from our hotels.

From there we will head towards Nikoklia. When we arrive near Asprokremmos Dam we will have a 10 minutes break before the start of the timed section. The timed section will start Kouklia (outside the village) head towards Agios Nicolaos and head towards Arsos. After Arsos we head towards Dora. Just before we descent to Dora, the timed section finishes.

The finish line for second stage will be at the Community of Kouklia. From the end of the timed section until the finish line the route will be relatively downhill with some uphill in between.

12. Third Stage

The race will start in front of Pafos Castle just like the day before.

From there, we will head towards the beach road near Coral Bay/Peyeia. Outside Peyia there will be a 10 minutes stop before the timed section begins. Then, we will head towards Kathikas (mostly uphill course) and then we will make a right turn towards the main road of Polis Chrysochous- Kathikas heading into Kathikas. At Kathikas we will have the finish of the timed section. Then, we will head towards Stroumbi community, Polemi and then Tsada in which we will have the finish line of the day as well as the entire event.

After the end of the event, riders are asked to head towards Pafos and follow the signs which will lead them towards the Hotels.

13. Feed Zones

The event is sponsored by GU and Bonk Breaker for sports nutrition supplements. Our sponsors will provide at the start of each day free sports drinks for you to fill your bottles. At the feed zone area at the end of the timed sections, except GU, you will also find fruits for everyone sponsored by Bolsevitamins.

In cases of high temperatures during the event more feed zones will be added.

Also, every escort car will carry water for the participants.

14. Results – Award Ceremonies

As mentioned above, the winners of each category will be riders who have made the shortest overall time from all three timed sections of the event. For the results to be valid, riders must complete all three stages of the event on bike.

Award ceremonies for the stages will be as follows according to the event program:

Friday 28th Award ceremonies at 20:15 after dinner (venue to be specified)

Saturday 29th Award ceremonies at 20:15 after dinner (venue to be specified)

Sunday 30th Award Ceremonies at Pafos Harbour, in front of the Castle at 14:30

15. Accommodation

This year the participants of the tour will be staying in two 5 star hotels, Almyra Spa and Annabelle Beach hotel, as a well one 3 star hotel Dionysos Central Hotel. All hotels are in close proximity with each other. We kindly ask the participants to have dinner at the hotel they will be staying and then gather at the award ceremony venue.

Check-out times

As Sunday is a busy day for the hotels, we kindly ask the participants to start checking out between 12:00pm and 13:00pm on Sunday, 30th March. An extra charge of 35EUR per room applies for anyone checking out after the given time.

16. Race Safety - Ambulance

The races will be covered with police cars / motorcycles as well as marshals on fixed points and marshals on Harley Davidson motorbikes as well as in Volkswagen cars. The routes will NOT be traffic-free.

We kindly ask all the participants as to comply with the Road Traffic Code of Cyprus. We cycle ALWAYS on the left side of the road.

The riders will be followed by an ambulance which in case of an accident it will immediately provide First Aid assistance.

17. Charity

As it is known, Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2014 aims to support the Larnaca Anti-Drug Association (SYKANA). Members and volunteers from these two associations will significantly contribute in the making of this event.
