Blackbeard died off Ocracoke at the hands of the Royal Navy on November 22 that same year. To commemorate the tercentennial of these events, 2018 will be filled with programs, events and exhibits about this infamous pirate and his doomed vessel. Blackbeard & Queen Anne’s Revenge Tercentennial Lecture Series Every Second Saturday, January–November, 2:00 pm This lecture series will be held on the second Saturday of each month and covers the history of Blackbeard the pirate, his flagship Queen Anne’s Revenge and the Golden Age of Piracy. For specific topics check the ‘Calendar at a Glance’ under ‘Blackbeard 300.’ Free Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge Traveling Exhibit The newly renovated traveling exhibit featuring artifacts from Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge will travel around the state. QAR Conservation Lab Oct 1–April 30, Mon-Fri, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. May 1–Sep 30, Tues-Sat, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Conservators from the lab will be available to answer questions about the processes required to conserve the thousands of artifacts that have been recovered from the Queen Anne’s Revenge site. Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit Expansion Opening June 8, 2018 Please forgive our dust as we renovate and expand the existing Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit. The exhibit will include an additional 800 square feet of new information, interactives and of course artifacts to shed light on the history of Blackbeard and his world. The Parade of Cannons June 9, 11 a.m. The “Parade of Cannons,” a special homage to the famed pirate Blackbeard, coincides with the opening of the newly expanded exhibit at the Maritime Museum featuring artifacts from Blackbeard’s flagship. The fleet will make its way from the Maritime Museum at the modern-day entrance to the Beaufort Harbor to the end of Fulford Street, the site of the “white house” on ancient charts. The “white house” was the sighting marker for the entrance to Beaufort during Blackbeard’s day. New Perspectives on Blackbeard the Pirate Symposium June 9, 2018 noon-5 p.m. Coinciding with the 300th anniversary of the grounding and abandonment of Blackbeard’s ship Queen Anne’s Revenge, this day of lectures will shed light on the ongoing research, recovery and exhibition of artifacts from this infamous shipwreck and pirate. Pirate Weeks June 11–15 and August 6–10 Make a free pirate themed take home craft and view replica pirate weapons! The film Blackbeard’s Lost Ship will be played regularly and visitors will be able to view the Museum’s newly renovated Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit featuring over 300 unique artifacts recovered from the wreck of Blackbeard’s flagship. Carolina Maritime Model Society Jan 27, Feb 24, Mar 24, Apr 28, May 19, Sep 29, Oct 27, Dec 1 All meetings at 2 p.m. The Carolina Maritime Model Society exists to promote the production of high quality ship models and encourage mem-bers and the public to participate in this craft that is as old as shipbuilding itself. All meetings are open to the public.3rd Annual North Carolina Whales and Whaling Symposium Apr 6, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. This day-long event will include presentations focusing on whales and historic hunting practices. Participants will learn about species of whales that can be found in our coastal waters, historical records of killer whales off North Carolina and about the fate of the whale ship Secheylle. Free.

Maritime Movies Every Tuesday in July (3, 10, 17, 24), 3 p.m. Beat the heat and catch an afternoon movie! Selected films engage visitors on topics of maritime history, culture and the natural environment of coastal North Carolina. Shackleford Banks Hike: Did Blackbeard See Horses? Apr 25, May 9, Jun 14, Aug 9 and Sep 19, 8:30 a.m.–noon Experience Outer Banks heritage and wildlife with a guided hike on Shackleford Banks, part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Participants will see an undeveloped barrier island like Blackbeard may have seen. This field trip requires hiking through sandy terrain for long distances. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, not suitable for children under 12. Pre-Registration required: $30.

Kayak the Salt Marsh Apr 18, May 17, Jun 28, Jul 31 and Sep 11, 9:00 a.m.–noon Learn about local history while on the water. Basic instruction and safety lessons followed by a relaxing paddle through a salt marsh. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, not suitable for children under 12. Participants must know how to swim and some kayak experience is recommended. Pre-Registration required: $30, $20 with own kayak.

Introduction to Wooden Boat Building Course Jan 27–28, Feb 24–25, Mar 17–18, Apr 7–8, Jun 2–3, 23–24, Jul 14–15, Aug 25–26, Sep 8–9, 29–30, Oct 13–14, Nov 17–18, and Dec 8–9. Students explore the art of boatbuilding in this two-day hands-on course, beginning with lofting, and moving on to the setup, steam bending and different methods of creating the back bone of small boats. They also learn planking methods, both carvel and lapstrake, and use of appropriate fasteners. After two days, students will have the knowledge, skill, and confidence to choose a design and style of boat to build on their own. (12 hours). Fee: $135. FoM: $121.50.

Boat-in-a-Day Course April 21, Jun 16, Jul 28, and Aug 11 Each participating team assembles a prepared kit for a small flat-bottomed plywood boat suitable for paddling. The boat is 12’ long, 32” wide, and weighs about 40 lbs. Each boat will be completed to a watertight condition. and ready to take home for paint or varnish. Teams are limited to a maximum of 4 persons, at least one of whom must be an adult. (6 hours). Fee: $600. FoM: $540. Minimum age: 8 yrs. old.

Southern Baja and the Sea of Cortez, Whale Watchers Paradise January 12, 7 p.m. Museum Natural Science Curator Keith Rittmaster will highlight a recent excursion he took to the Sea of Cortez between the Baja peninsula and mainland Mexico. The marine life observed on his adventure put on quite a show! Keith’s presentation will include photographs and video. Limited Spaces Available! Dates and times vary, Jun–Aug Children use sailing to learn seamanship, navigation, boating safety and sailing techniques for beginning to advanced sailors. Junior Sailing is a Friends of the Museum program. Registration begins Feb 14. The fee is $285 per session. Members receive a $35 discount per session. Sessions consist of one group in the morning from 8:30 a.m.–noon and another in the afternoon from 1 p.m.–4:30 p.m.Session 1: AM or PM, June 11–22 Session 2: AM or PM, June 25–July 6 Session 3: AM or PM, July 9–20 Session 4: AM or PM, July 23–August 3Regatta Week: August 6–11, 12:30–5 p.m. The purpose of this six-day Regatta Week is to gain greater familiarity with the boats and to prepare for and race in a regatta. Participants must have prior sailing experience. Regatta registration, lunch, and dinner on Saturday are included in the fee. It is expected that a parent or guardian will accompany students to the regatta in Oriental on that Saturday.The Junior Sailing Program brochure and registration form are available on the website and at the Museum.

BOATING SAFETY PROGRAMS

Build Your Own Stand-Up Paddle Board Course Call to schedule Participants build their own stand-up paddle board custom-fit to their size from cedar and plywood. Builders will be responsible for var-nishing or painting their new boards at home after finishing the course. (24 hours). Fee: $1,000. FoM: $900.

Lift Half- Model Making Course Call to schedule Students learn how to read a set of plans and use the basic woodworking tools most commonly found in a boatbuilder’s tool kit to shape a lift half-model of a North Carolina Shad Boat. The models are completed in a step-by-step procedure ready to start applying a finish. (12 hours). Fee: $110. FoM: $99.

Build a Stitch & Glue Kayak/Canoe Call to schedule Each participant in this class will use the stitch and glue method to build a boat, preselected in consultation with the instructor from a range of styles. Suitable types include performance kayaks 11-14 feet long, 17-foot sea/ touring kayaks, 12 to 14-foot canoes, or a 12-foot pram or rowboat. Participants will complete their boats to the point when they are ready to take home to be painted and/or varnished. (60-72 hours). Fee: $750–$1,250. FoM: $675–$1,125.

Paddle/Oar Making Course Call to schedule Participants can choose to make a canoe paddle, stand-up paddleboard paddle, kayak paddle, or pair of oars in this two-day class. Each participant will take home a paddle or pair of oars ready for paint or varnish. (12 hours). Fee: $275; or $325 for a pair of oars. FoM: $247.50–$292.50.

The Summer Science School offers students the opportunity to learn about the natural and maritime history of coastal North Carolina. Registration opens Feb. 14, and is required. Call 252-504-7758 to enroll. Preschool Storytime and Crafts Jun 13, Jul 3, Aug 1, 9 a.m.–10 a.m. Includes a story, estuarine critter observation and a related craft. Free Admission. Entering preschool. Pirates! June 19–20, 28–29, July 17–18, 26–27, 9 a.m.–noon During this 2-day class, ten young pirates and their fearless captain will learn how pirates like Blackbeard lived, dressed, ate and worked. The pirate crew will work together to set the rules of the ship, learn some battle skills with their wooden weapons, and at the end go on a pirate worthy hunt through the Museum to locate the hidden treasure! Fee: $65. Boats & Models (pirate ship) June 25–27, July 23–25 , 9 a.m.–noon Build a model of a pirate ship at the Museum’s Watercraft Center. Use Museum exhibits and field trips to learn about coastal waterways, local boats and the skills needed to work on and around the water. Fee: $95.

Fish & Fishing June 21–22, July 19–20, 9 a.m.–noon An introduction to coastal fish and fishing methods. Cane poles, bait, and tackle are provided for dock fishing for this 2-day class. Students also use nets to catch and identify marine life in near shore waters. Fee: $75.

Seashore Life I July 5–6, August 2–3, 9 a.m.–noon Investigate coastal marine life of the tidal flats, salt marshes and sounds on local islands on this 2-day class. Field-based classes include ferry ride, barrier island hiking and animal identification. Fee: $60.

Maritime Adventures July 9–13, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The staff of the NC Maritime Museum and the Rachel Carson Reserve are pairing up to create this unique camp that combines history and science to understand the local maritime environment, culture, legends and history of the coast. Topics covered will include sea monsters, plankton, cetaceans, pirates and more! Students will be asked to participate in field trips to local sites such as Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground and participate in hands on experiments including small creature dissections and chocolate chip excavations. Fee: $100.

Seashore Life II July 18–20, August 6-8, 9 a.m.–noon Investigate estuarine habitats, plants and animals through field and lab studies. This 3-day course includes a field trip to the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve, water quality testing, using microscopes for plankton identification and many more activities. Fee: $60.

Science of Surfboards August 7–8, 9 a.m.–noon Students will use Museum exhibits and field trips to learn how surfboards have evolved down through the years, from heavy wooden boards weighing more than 150 pounds to today’s state of the art boards made of modern polymers weighing less than 10 pounds. They will also learn about various methods used to fabricate surfboards. Fee: $75.
