Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

his faithfulness continues through all genera-tions.

COLLECT FOR PURITY (Leader)

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GLORIA Hymnal S-280

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON (All Sit) Haggai 1:15b-2:9

In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. The latter

splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. THE PSALM Psalm 145:1-5, 18-22 * Read responsively by half verses

I will exalt you, O God my King, * and bless your Name for ever and ever.

Every day will I bless you * and praise your Name for ever and ever.

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * there is no end to his greatness.

One generation shall praise your works to another * and shall declare your power.

I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty * and all your marvelous works.

The Lord is righteous in all his ways * and loving in all his works.

The Lord is near to those who call upon him, * to all who call upon him faithfully.

He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; * he hears their cry and helps them.

The Lord preserves all those who love him, * but he destroys all the wicked.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; * let all flesh bless his holy Name for ever and ever. THE EPISTLE 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself

above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 20:27-38

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke People Glory to you, Lord Christ

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her." Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. GRADUAL HYMN Come down, O Love divine (verse 3) Hymnal 516 SERMON Fr. Paul Collins THE NICENE CREED (All Stand) BCP p. 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SERMON NOTES: TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

It’s Okay … It is what It is!

1. Sadducees asked Jesus a question • Sadducees: influential religious as well as political leaders. Responsible for taking care

of the Temple and all its rituals. Wealthy and well versed in the books of the Law (Torah), the first five books of the Old Testament.

• They did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, simply because "resurrection" is not mentioned in the first five books of the Jewish Scriptures.

• They thought, they had all the answers, but asked Jesus a question to trick him: In the resurrection whose wife will the woman be of the seven brothers who married her?

• It's okay if you don't have all the answers! It's okay for feeling clueless, for feeling like you don't have it all figured out. Life is not supposed to be comfortable with all the answers, and all figured out.

• This age and the age to come. In the age to come (life beyond the grave), things are not bound by human desires. Neither it is driven by human intentions.

• Your identity in this age carries to the age to come. • Children of God (God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) are children of the resurrection. • God is not God of the dead, but God of the living, and to God, all things are known,

and with God, all things are possible. 3. What does this Gospel mean to us today? • Honestly, I, your priest, acknowledge that there are so many unknowns in this world. It is okay with not being sure about the details of life after death. Nonetheless, we are children of God. Our God is not the kind of God, who would allow" the people of his pasture to perish," and the "sheep of his hand" to be swallowed up into bleak nothingness. Our relationship with God is forever, and it is for eternity. It is abiding in God, which means to be at home in God. • It is what it is – even living in the frustration of chances, changes, and challenges, not

knowing is part of the beautiful journey of life. It's Okay! Let us walk on …in God all things are possible!

Amen.

prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to SING, (see insert in pews)

People and Celebrant Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us as we forgive others; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, are yours for ever. Amen.
