About me

In 2006, I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from K-State. A couple years ago, I received my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Emporia. This is my seventh year working for Olathe, and also my seventh year at Sunnyside!

I could not ask for a better team of teachers to be working with. We are the best of friends and you will find we are in constant communication. We work hard to keep the other classes in mind

when we plan assignments and projects. Our goal is provide your student with a

positive educational experience!

Communication Parent/Teacher communication has a direct impact on your student’s success.

Newsletters will be emailed and posted on the website every Friday http://teachers.olatheschools.com/ssfifthgrade/.

Agendas are expected to be filled out by the student every day.

Please look at and sign the agenda every day. We will check these periodically, and class teams are awarded points daily based on completion of this task.

SuppliesThank you for sending supplies

with your student.Keep in mind that students may need to replenish supplies throughout the year,

especially paper and pencils!

We understand cell phones are a family necessity for some. Usage

from 8:00 to 3:40 is not allowed on school grounds. Please notify your

student of this policy.

Lunch is from 11:40 to 12:05.

I do allow midmorning snack @ 9:00.

Students are allowed to bring fruits, veggies, yogurt,string cheese, granola bars (healthy ones), fruit snacks.

No CHOCOLATE or nuts please!!

Please prep food before sending it to school.

Each student brings their own snack.

Can’t share due to health codefor allergies and germ transmission.

In addition to the Pearson enVision math textbooks and manipulatives we have at school, students and parents have

resources through the Pearson SuccessNet website.http://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com

A letter will be coming home containing your student’slogin user name and password.

This is a great resource for going back over the lesson to help youand your student. The textbook is also online.

GradingStudents will receive grades in Reading, Writing, Spelling,

Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Grading Scale:

A = 90 – 100%B = 80 – 89%C = 70 – 79%D = 60 – 69%N = 0 – 59%

Grades will be emailed on a weekly (math) & bi-weekly basis.Grade cards will be sent home at the end of each quarter.

Igpro progress reportsUpdates that are emailed to you weekly and bi-weekly are sent from our

grading program IGPro. On the reports you will see your student’s assignments with possible

abbreviated notations. They are: NHI – not handed in. Considered to be a zero until

the assignment is handed in. E – excused from the assignment. Does not count against the overall grade percentage. Sick – out sick and has 2 days for every day sick

to make up work.

The amount of homework your child receives beyond this schedule is based on how well he/she uses class time.

Studying for tests and completing book reports will also occur at home. (Can complete at school if all other work is finished first and

there is time.)

All late assignments receive a10% automatic deduction in grade.

Not turning in an assignment is not an option.

5 th grade organizational framework

Agenda – filled out daily by student, reviewed and signed each night by parent.

Newsletters – emailed home and posted to website every Friday.

End of Week Emails – highlight any important events or information; newsletters attached.

Websites – contain all study guides, newsletters, resources, curriculum, and directions for major projects; each teacher website is linked to main 5th grade website.

Grade Updates – Math emailed weekly; all other subjects bi-weekly.

Yellow Jacket Time – study hall for students to complete work, visit other teachers for added support, get organized, and finish filling out agenda each day.

Band-Strings Time – sometimes used as study hall.

5 th grade organizational framework

Daily Assignment Checklist – used to verify assignment completion.

Missing Assignment Board – late or missing assignments are listed on each teacher’s board.

Daily Supply List – projected on classroom screen listing required materials for each class.

Back to School Night Parent Packet – contains pertinent information for home-school communication.

Make-up Work Expectations – following an absence, students retrieve missed assignments from specified location in each teacher’s room. If you would like to pick up missing work, please notify us by 10:00 a.m.

ConferencesSince we are departmentalized, the fifth grade teachers will hold

Open Conferences in the gym at the following times:Wednesday, 4:40 – 8:30, October 17 & February 13Thursday, 11:00 – 3:00, October 18 & February 14

These times will allow parents to meet with their child’s teachers according to subject areas as well as meet with their homeroom teacher.

Appointment Conference times will be available during the following time periods (these will be held in the teacher’s classrooms):

Thursday, 3:00 – 4:00 and 5:00 – 7:40, October 18 & February 14 We will be contacting you if we would like to meet with you for a conference during this

time. You may also contact us if you would like to schedule an appointment. Teachers will not be in the gym for open conferences during appointment times.

Please use a sticky note to jot down a detail about your 5th grade year.

Some examples would be: • Ms. Frieberg had one teacher in the afternoon and rotated in the morning. • We could start playing a band instrument in 4th grade.• We had recess twice a day.

Sometime soon, we will place all of the sticky notes in a Venn diagram for a compare and contrast lesson.
