What a great (and busy) Friday we all had last week. After swimming in the morning, a delicious sausage sizzle kindly provided by the P&C was enjoyed by the ravenous students and staff. There was then time to prepare for our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Parade. Thanks to our Student Project team, who fund-raised by providing “Milo and Homebake” for morning tea once a week throughout winter, there was enough funds to hire a jumping castle after the Parade. There were actually two jumping castles, as Mr Ben and Mrs Janelle Kent kindly donated their jumping castle for the festivities. All of the students enjoyed themselves greatly and were very appreciative that their behaviour being recognised and rewarded. We thanks our PBL Coach, Mrs Jenny McCarthy and our Community Policing Officer, Sergeant Dan O’Dea for being an important part of the presentation of our behaviour awards.

On Thursday last week the whole school participated in the Outdoor Classroom initiative. In literacy, the Years Prep to 2 generated rhyming words, alliteration and sound in spoken words in walks around our bush, playgrounds and play areas. I think they also put together their own version of “Wombat Stew”. In Maths outdoors, they had different experiences in show-ing the directions of clock hands using nature’s materi-als and telling the time.

The older students were not left out of the outdoor fun! In Years 3 -6 literacy, speaking, listening and problem solv-ing were enhanced by having the students use a large rope to make mystery shapes, using directional and posi-tional language and instructions. Students in teams then used their knowledge of procedures to design and build a shelter by writing step-by-step instructions. These instructions were then given to another group to test both the level of the instructions and the following of these instructions. Maths was very interesting with students using sticks to make right-angled isosceles triangles. Students then had to use this knowledge and the clinometer they’d previously made, to work out how they could measure the height of a tree.

Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening

Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screen-ing is therefore vital in early childhood, particularly for conditions such as ‘lazy eye’, which if not detected early can lead to blindness.

A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school in 2018 to commence vision screening for all Prep Year children. If you wish to have your child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete and sign the consent form sent home with your child and return this to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible. You will be advised in writing of the outcome of your child’s screening.

Please note that if your child has had a vision assessment in the past 12 months it is not neces-sary for him/her to participate in this screening program. If this is the case, please complete the consent form and indicate that you do not wish for your child to participate, and ensure that you follow the schedule of reviews recommended by your eye health professional.

The children will also be manipulating concrete materials involving the concepts of multiplication and division. Yr 1 and 2 children are learning their number facts for 15. Thank you to the parents who assist with maths homework - nightly practice is evident with accuracy on Friday number fact tests. The Prep boys are continuing to enhance their skills for addition and subtraction. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be completing the 3 Minute tests for addition and subtraction.

Handwriting activities /booklets are being written in daily with success. Most children are experiencing success with their PM Readers. Please continue to discuss, listen and then ask questions about the text. What is a pronoun? When do we use it? – part of Grammar this week. Research will continue ready for our written information and poster presentation.

On Tuesday afternoons, Year 2 are looking at a map of the world, locating and naming the continents. What are the states/ territories of Australia and their capital cities? All children are investigating “Exploring local connections and investigating connections with other places” concepts to be covered over the next couple of weeks.

Dance class with M P. was very popular and continues until Week 9 when we have our Presentation. Mrs Yates takes a short video of the dance moves so we can practise during the week.
