I’m so glad you asked. Annual Conference is when the clergy of a specified geographical area (also called a conference) and an equal number of lay delegates from that conference come together to discuss the issues related to the United Methodist Church within the bounds of that conference. Okay, that was a messy sentence. Let me break it down for you… A conference is kind of like a state within the United States. In fact, some states, like South Carolina and Virginia are annual conferences all to themselves. In North Carolina we have so many United Methodist churches that we have two conferences. The North Carolina Conference (our conference) and the Western North Carolina Conference. The dividing line is between Greensboro and Burlington. Each conference is led by a Bishop. Our bishop lives in Raleigh; and the con- ference offices are in nearby Garner. At Annual Conference the clergy and lay delegates gather each year to hear reports and vote on plans for the future of their local conference. We celebrate the many ministries of the conference, like youth and camping ministries (think Camp Don Lee), the Methodist Home for Children, and even the ministry we initiated in Rotifunk, Sierra Leone. One of the high- lights for me each year is going to the ordination service where the new elders and deacons are ordained after years of education, training, practice, and inquisition. Meanwhile, we also grieve the loss of those pastors and spouses who have died in the last year at the annual me- morial service. As I get older and gain more years of experience I seem to know more and more of the people that have passed on in the last year. And there’s business to do. We set a budget each year, which includes money for all the var- ious ministries that the conference does and sets salaries for the district superintendents and support staff. That budget is then divided up and given proportionately to each local church in what we call “apportionments.” Our own church budget includes a portion of the con- ference budget. All 800 United Methodist churches in our conference pay a share. Because our church is bigger than most United Methodist churches in eastern North Carolina our share is a little bigger than most. And we are proud to say that we have paid our apportion- ments in full in order to support the ministries of the annual conference for many, many years in a row. Decades even. Each conference has an equal number of clergy and lay delegates and each vote counts the same. These are not separate entities like the Senate and the House of Representatives in Congress. Instead, all vote together. Because we have two appointed clergy (Pastor Christi- na and I) at our church we get two lay delegates from our church too. Our lay delegates are Dick and Belinda Morrison. But wait! There’s more. All retired clergy and pastors serving in extension ministries, like hospital chaplains, can also vote at annual conference. So, each district within the conference sends at-large delegates to offset the total number of clergy in the entire conference. Three of those at-large delegates from the Harbor District are from Wrightsville UMC. They are Barbara Gowdy, Emily Lain, and Donna Pinckney. (continued on page 2)

Annual Conference Every June

What is Annual Conference, and why should anyone care? Our bishop lives in Raleigh; and the con-ference offices are in nearby Garner.

One of the high-lights for me each year is going to the ordination service where the new elders and deacons are ordained after years of education, training, practice, and inquisition. Meanwhile, we also grieve the loss of those pastors and spouses who have died in the last year at the annual me-morial service. As I get older and gain more years of experience I seem to know more and more of the people that have passed on in the last year.

And there’s business to do. We set a budget each year, which includes money for all the var-ious ministries that the conference does and sets salaries for the district superintendents and support staff. That budget is then divided up and given proportionately to each local church in what we call “apportionments.” Our own church budget includes a portion of the con-ference budget. All 800 United Methodist churches in our conference pay a share. Because our church is bigger than most United Methodist churches in eastern North Carolina our share is a little bigger than most. And we are proud to say that we have paid our apportion-ments in full in order to support the ministries of the annual conference for many, many years in a row. Decades even.

Each conference has an equal number of clergy and lay delegates and each vote counts the same. These are not separate entities like the Senate and the House of Representatives in Congress. Instead, all vote together. Because we have two appointed clergy (Pastor Christi-na and I) at our church we get two lay delegates from our church too. Our lay delegates are Dick and Belinda Morrison. But wait! There’s more. All retired clergy and pastors serving in extension ministries, like hospital chaplains, can also vote at annual conference. Stephen Ministry by Beth Perry

It’s that time of year again. Several people expressed interest last year in becoming Stephen Ministers but due to scheduling problems and family issues, they could not pursue it.

Training will start in September for a new class of Stephen Ministers. If you are interested, please contact Janis Norris at 509-9608 or Beth Perry at 231-2369.

The classes run from September to February. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9 pm at either the Baptist Activity Center on Independence Blvd. or First Presbyterian Church on Third Street. There is one Saturday retreat in November that runs from 9-3.

If you decide to go through training, you will find your faith deepened and your spirit fed. Those of us who have trained find we use our training in our everyday lives, not just in Ste-phen Ministry.

As always, if you feel the need for a Stephen Minister to help you through some problem in your life, please give us a call. We have Stephen Ministers eager to serve you.

(continued from page 1)

The big question on everyone’s mind is how will we vote on matters related to LGBTQ inclusion and the United Methodist Book of Discipline. Those matters aren’t answered at Annual Conference. They are dealt with at Gen-eral Conference, which brings together delegates from every Annual Conference around the world every four years to deal with matters that relate to the United Methodist denomination as a whole. It is, however, what we call a “voting year” at annual conference. That means this is the year we elect the delegates who will represent our annual conference at the General Conference next May in Minneapolis. The North Carolina Conference gets to send eight lay delegates and eight clergy delegates to vote at next year’s General Conference.

Furthermore, we get to send 16 lay delegates and 16 clergy delegates to Jurisdictional Conference. That confer-ence will take place in 2020 at Lake Junaluska, NC. The sole purpose of Jurisdictional Conference is to elect new bishops. Our jurisdiction is the Southeast United States. Only delegates from the Southeast can elect bishops to Southeastern Annual Conferences. We don’t elect our bishop specifically; but instead elect ALL the new bishops who will be serving in the Southeast and then those bishops are appointed to serve an annual conference just like pastors are appointed to serve a local church. Our very own Dick Morrison was a lay delegate to Jurisdictional Conference in 2016, and he also served on-site as an alternate to the special called General Conference earlier this year in St. Louis.

The North Carolina Annual Conference runs from June 12-15 at the Greenville Convention Center. I hope you will join me in prayer for all the delegates who will be attending this year. If you have any other questions about annual conference feel free to send me an email at [email protected] or call the church office at 910-256-4471.

May the Peace of Christ be with you, Pastor Doug

Super Service Saturday News!

On Saturday, April 27, the Outreach Committee sponsored the first annual Super Service Saturday at WUMC. We met in the Fellowship Hall for a light breakfast, a devotion by Pastor Christina and a brief introduction of the pro-jects for the morning.

Blessings Bags - 7 adults and 5 children assembled Blessings Bags - 80 for Walking Tall, a ministry for unsheltered adults, 80 for Snipes Academy and 80 for the Help Hub. These bags, depending on the destination, included fruit cups, granola bars, socks, tuna fish packs, Slim Jims, tooth brushes and many other needed articles. Many thanks to Kathy Busby for organizing this project!

Loaves and Fishes - 6 adults prepared, then froze, vegetable soup, macaroni and cheese and chicken tetrazzini for use by our church staff and members for delivery to those in our congregation in need of a nutritious meal. Ku-dos to the cooks in this group!

13th Street House for Women - 7 adults created a Community Garden on the property of the 13th Street House for Women, a nonprofit organization supported by WUMC. In addition, the crew cut down a huge dead tree, cleaned the gardens in the front of the houses and spruced up the back yards. The vegetable and herbs will be used by the residents at the houses and for the surrounding neighborhood. A huge shout out to David Brenner for his amazing help in making this project happen.

Wrightsville Beach clean up - 4 adults and 1 child walked the beach and picked up trash. As a bonus, they got to see the Paddle Board competition. One lucky UNCW student was certainly grateful for a clean up - her phone was found in the sand by Jax Fowler. Wow, was he excited to make this find!

Work on Wilmington

As part of the First Annual Super Saturday Service Day, our 7th annual W.O.W. project was Saturday morning April 27th at the Market St YMCA. Using materials supplied by The Chamber of Commerce, a 20 x 30 ft. bare dirt space was converted into a lovely garden. The WUMC team consisted of 7 adults. Importantly, as city kids, they now have a small garden to grow and "harvest" some vegetables and cut flowers. A big thank you to Walt and Eunice's son, Mike Andrews, for leading this group.

We hope to make this Service Day an annual event. It was a fun-filled day where we made new friends, worked with our amazing youth and served our community as the hands and feet of Christ.

Cape Fear Homeless by Walt Andrews

Watching video of the homeless lining the streets of some of our largest cities, one might wonder about our local homeless situation. The internet says North Carolina has about 9,300 homeless with about 2,400 living without shelter. Locally it is estimated there are several hundred homeless living in an ever revolving mix of shelters, living in cars, living on the streets and in the woods, etc. Wrightsville UMC gets involved through Interfaith Hospitality and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. About 4% of MHC food goes to “N.S.” which stands for no stove. Major help for the homeless is provided by the Salvation Army with their famous Soup Kitchen. A recent Star News article reports their Red Shield Shelter recently reopened after Hurricane repairs. They have 52 beds for men, women and families. A major ministry for the homeless is the Good Shepherd Center, the Ashley Center (16 units for home-less veterans and 8 units for homeless men with disabilities), the new 40 unit SECU Lakeside Reserve (offering 660 sq. ft. apartments for very low cost) and Day Shelter/Night Shelter (118 beds) and Medical Clinic.

Two other charities for the homeless are Lake Front Baptist Church and Vigilant Hope located on the same cam-pus near Greenfield Lake. The church basement is The Clothing Closet open from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesdays and Thursday. The rule is, “Take what you need, no questions asked.” There is free breakfast on Monday and Sat-urday with free dinner Thursday. Vigilant Hope has a two unit hot shower mounted on a trailer that is open a number of times each week. Several times each month, the shower is hauled in homeless colonies in the area. They also help run The Urban Garden which is a several football field size “fresh vegetable farm” off of Kerr Ave. The produce is provided to a local food bank. Twice a year, Vigilant Hope offers a weekend “Poverty Simulation”. With proper supervision, you spend the weekend in the woods living as homeless people. The purpose is to more fully understand Christ’s love and compassion for the poor. The goal of all these charities is to personally befriend each of the homeless in order to fully understand their situation in order to get them into permanent shelter. Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood says, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, “it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people by heroes.”

Assisting the homeless could be a worthy use of your time, talent, and donations. Remember what Christ said, “What you do for the least of these, you do for me.”

Movie and Popcorn

Come join us for popcorn and a movie on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall! We’ll watch “Althea and Arthur,” a documentary about the life of tennis stars Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe, who both broke the color barrier in tennis. We will also hear from Lenny Simpson, founder of One Love Tennis.

Every year, Wrightsville UMC hosts guests

from Family Promise (formerly known as In-terfaith Hospitality or “Interfaith”), families

who are temporarily homeless and are work-ing or seeking employment and homes. In-terfaith guests, who typically have small chil-

dren, live in church space, rotating to new churches every few weeks. After 3 months,

more than 90 percent are ready to move into

housing on their own!

But we need YOUR help!

Can you…

Cook a meal and eat with our guests?

Stay overnight at the church? Drive some families to the day center?

Do a few loads of laundry?

Help set up cots and rooms?

Remember when your teacher gave you a list of books to read over the summer? As an avid reader,

oh how I loved those lists! I loved checking the completed books off the list and starting the next

one. I looked so forward to trips to the library and book store.

In that spirit, we have compiled a list of books for you to consider for the summer. It’s not “required

reading” and there will be no tests. It’s not meant to induce guilt if you’re not one who enjoys read-

ing. It’s not an exhaustive list of all things you should ever read – or even that you should read this

summer.

It IS simply a list of books that you might consider when you’re grabbing a book for your next trip,

your wait in the carpool line, your afternoon on the deck or maybe your morning at the beach. It IS

an assortment of books for every taste – we hope. It IS a place to start.

Enjoy! Donna

Again… my love of reading…this summer we have chosen three books that we will read together and discuss in book club style. The three selections and the discussion info for June are listed below.

We hope you’ll join us!

…and if you can’t…we hope you’ll add the books to your personal reading list and find someone to discuss them with. We think you’ll be glad you did!

Reforesting Faith, Sleeth

“The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Perhaps you've missed the forest...and the trees. In this groundbreaking walk through Scripture, former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case why trees are essential to every Christian's understanding of God. This is the rare book that connects those who love the Creator with creation, and those who love creation with the Creator. It offers inspirational yet practical ways to express our love for God--and our neighbors--by planting spiritual trees and physical trees in the world. Join Dr. Sleeth as he navigates the Bible's trail of trees to explore the wonders of life, death, and re-birth. You'll be amazed at how science is just beginning to catch up to the truths described in Scrip-ture thousands of years ago. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods--and through Scripture--will never be the same.”

We’ll discuss this book on June 18 at 6:30.

More info and a sign up sheet is available on the deep roots bulletin board in the office hallway.
