An attempt for forensic fire investigation using LIBS
Soojin Choi1, Jack J. Yoh1 1 Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Seoul National University

Keywords: Residues from fire, Ignition source The residues from fire debris were analysed for investigating the ignition source by using the LIBS. Gas stove, disposable lighter, and candle were considered as the ignition source that relies on the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. Electric stove, on the other hand, is used as an ignitor without the burning of hydrocarbons. Figure 1 shows carbon and magnesium signals of the burned cotton sample. The hydrocarbon content in the fuel is responsible for the fire residue to contain carbon, while LIBS signal from electric stove does not contain carbon. The existence of carbon or hydrogen suggests a potential ignition source of hydrocarbon fuels while additional signal of magnesium, for instance, further suggests the candle as a prime source. Such data analysis and in-situ detection of forensic signals via the LIBS may assist the fire investigation at the crime scenes.
