SAVING ENERGYThe impact of energy use on the world'sclimate and our cost of living means thatdiscovering how to save energy is importantto everyone. You might think you can't domuch to make a difference but you can if youjust know how.

Look at the big energy eaters in the kitchen:basic kitchen appliances like the oven, thefridge and the washer and the luxuryadditions like the dishwasher, microwave andthe juicer. Then take some simple stepsimmediately: only boil as much water as youneed in the kettle; keep the freezer full ashalf-empty freezers cost more to run than fullones; use the right sized pan on the hob anduse a lid to retain heat.

Try to remember that a 30 degree wash-loaduses less energy than one done at a highertemperature; microwaves are more energyefficient than ovens and the most energyefficient way to dry clothes is to hang themoutside on a washing line - free energy withno emissions.

If your family needs to replace a worn-outkitchen appliance go for an energy efficientmodel. Look for the Energy SavingRecommended logo, which guarantees that theproduct is the most efficient in its category, will cost less to run and help lower the CO2emissions from your house. Replacing an oldfridge freezer with a new ESR model will savearound £39.00 a year and 140kg of CO2.Recommended fridge freezers can be boughtfor around £250.00 so energy efficiency canbe achieved quite cheaply.
