Managers Report

THE COUNTDOWN is well and truly on until Christmas, and with less than one month until the largest Christmas Carnival this side of the southern hemisphere, the WARI office is a hive of activity as preparations are underway for the biggest event of the WARI calendar year.

Cherished by young and old alike, Santa’s Christmas Carnival is an institution not to be missed! Ensure you get those application forms in by Friday 28 November 2014 to help ‘Santa’s Elves’ prepare for the big day!

Bearing down on the back of Christmas celebrations are the Holiday Homes ballots for Easter and July 2015 (page 9), with applications closing on Friday 28 November 2014 you better ‘hop to it!’

Keen observers will notice a new corporate sponsor to the WARI rail family in Railtrain. CEO Graham Butler was extremely pleased to provide the opportunity for Railtrain employees to join our fantastic organisation along with other rail supporters. Again I extend a very big welcome to Railtrain and I look forward to welcoming aboard their employees.

During inspection tours of our holiday homes around the state I have had discussions with the Caretakers, and one main issue raised is that some members are demanding assistance for minor issues in the home at inconvenient times.

Could members please refrain from calling Caretakers for minor issues unless there is a threat to safety or security. To aid this issue, we are rolling out Maintenance Registers for all homes so that members can record maintenance issues during their stay and the Caretaker can arrange maintenance upon their weekly inspection. On a brighter note, the Caretakers have advised the improved standard of cleaning at the holiday homes as of late, and I thank members for their efforts in this area.

Remember as we approach the warmer weather our energy consumption is at full peak. Help out the environment and ensure your holiday is kept at a low cost by reducing consumption of water, switching off the air-conditioner when you’re not in the home and by keeping curtains drawn to block out the warm sunlit rays and opening the windows at night to cool the house down. Remember, ‘Switch OFF to SAVE $$$’.

On behalf of WARI Staff and Council, I sincerely hope that you and your family have a magical Christmas and that all your festivities are filled with joy and merriment that will see you through the New Year and beyond!

I look forward to presenting you with a world of excitement and activities in 2015!

Mark Toogood

Can you believe it’s that time of year again? The magic of Christmas is in the air!

All Aboard for Railtrain WARI STAFF AND Council would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest Corporate Supporter Railtrain. Joining our already extensive list of Corporate Supporters across the rail network, Railtrain employees have been welcomed into the WARI rail family and can now enjoy the leisure and lifestyle benefits and rail hospitality that WARI is famous for.

Railtrain was formed in 2003 to provide Rail Safety Compliance, Training, Recruitment and Skills Development to the rail industry. A market leader in the specialised field, Railtrain has developed a large client base (including the likes of BHPBIO, Rio Tinto, FMG, Pacific National, Aurizon, John Holland and the PTA) and established an excellent reputation within the rail industry built on the knowledge base from a dedicated team of professionals.

Executive Director of Railtrain Graham Butler (who also holds a historical working relationship with Westrail), is excited about the new association and has encouraged Railtrain employees to take advantage of the great offer available.

WARI Staff, Council and Supporters welcome our new recruits and look forward to meeting you all further down the track!

The WARI team at the 2013 Christmas Carnival

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The WARI office will be closed from 12pm, Wednesday 24 December 2014 and will re-open at 8.30am on Monday 5 January 2015.

A Railway Pie and a Cuppa?REMINISCENT of days gone by and the ole’ buffet dining carriages, a carriage from the first train built in Western Australia (ARS 348) has been lovingly and painstakingly restored to its former glory thanks to volunteers of the Bassendean Railway Museum. The carriage has recently been transported to its new home as a centrepiece in the Dome Café development currently under construction as part of the refurbishment of the Bassendean Village Shopping Centre.

THE RAILWAY MUSEUM in Bassendean has recently achieved approval under the Australian Tourism Accreditation Program. Many years of hard work from dedicated enthusiast and volunteers has culminated in a special award ceremony that was held at the museum on Friday 11 April where the Member for Perth, the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MHR, presented the Railway Museum with the much anticipated certification to operate as an Accredited Tourism Business.

Cr. John Gangell (the Bassendean Mayor) was also in attendance to mark the significance of the occasion and the new phase in the Museum’s progress. The Museum, located in Railway Parade Bassendean, is open to visitors on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.

Radio Lollipop Uniform Free Day

MORNING COMMUTERS were forgiven for thinking they were still in a dream state whilst travelling to their daily destination – as volunteers and staff from Transperth and the Public Transport Authority proudly donned their most colourful costumes and descended on Perth CBD to collect donations for the Radio Lollipop Uniform Free Day held in March.

Radio Lollipop is a charity organisation with a head studio located at Princess Margaret Hospital. As well as the radio broadcast, volunteers from Radio Lollipop also visit children in hospital, providing comfort, play and entertainment with competitions, crafts and games to stave off boredom and take their minds off their illnesses.

This year a record-breaking grand total in excess of $110,000 was raised, surpassing last years’ tally by $7,000 plus. Transperth’s contribution was a massive $73,000 from the bus companies, collection tins at stations and various initiatives including BBQ’s, raffles and a quiz night.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers involved and to the wonderfully generous people of Perth.

In pursuit of excellence – Brookfield RailCONGRATULATIONS to the staff and stakeholders of Brookfield Rail who were crowned the winner of the Corporate Excellence and Innovation Award at the prestigious 2014 Australasian Rail Industry Awards held in Melbourne in July.

The win is a major coup for Brookfield Rail, which has undergone a significant and successful business transformation over the past three years.

Accepting the award in Melbourne, Brookfield Rail CEO Paul Larsen said the win was testament to the company’s outstanding achievements in the field of corporate excellence and innovation.

“I am proud our achievements have now been recognised on an international level by the Australasian Railway Association.

“Brookfield Rail has experienced a period of rapid growth since 2011, both in terms of infrastructure investment and the development of our people.

“I am pleased that we have been able to harness this growth into ensuring Brookfield Rail is a thriving and profitable business that delivers direct financial benefits to our customers and the economy of Western Australia,” said Mr Larsen.

FOLLOWING THE opening ceremonies, a social afternoon of bowls was then had by all, after the photographer had taken the official team photos.

On Day 2, WA took on VIC competing for the morning competitions of Singles, Pairs Triples & Fours. In the afternoon the Commissioners shield was being played for along with the Anderson Trophy.

On Day 3, WA had a bye allowing the team members to take in some sights of Noosa and the surrounding suburbs. The ladies had the day trip and were taken to the Buderim Ginger Factory, where we travelled on a local sugar train to see the sights and gardens of the factory. A great day was enjoyed by all. In the evening the team enjoyed dinner funded appreciatively by WARI at the Ivory Palms Resort’s restaurant.

Day 4 was the official day trip for all of the participating systems. The teams travelled on luxury coaches to Montville, a lovely little township in the Hinterlands area of the Sunshine Coast. From there teams went to the Mary Caincross Park to take in stunning views of the Glasshouse Mountains. The next stop was at the infamous Ettamogah Pub for

ANZRI Bowls Carnival 2014

a spectacular lunch including free time to explore the famous tourist attraction and all the surrounding gift shops.

Day 5 and Day 6, WA was back into the bowls action against NZ playing competitive bowls in typical QLD tropical conditions.

Tuesday 25 February was the last day of competition with WA playing NSW. At the end of the day results were tallied and the finalists were then declared for the following day’s play. Queensland won the overall Commissioner’s Shield narrowly by 1 point over NSW.

WA fared well and had the No.2 Singles representative Colin Williamson, playing for the outright victory. He played a very courageous game and with nerves not on

The official opening of the 40th ANZRI bowls carnival was held on Monday 17 February 2014 in Noosa/Tewantin, QLD. Colin Brabazon being a life member of ANZRI (and representing WA) was given the duty of bowling the first bowl to officially open the carnival.

his side, Bill Carey representing NZ was the winner.

Again the Anderson Rink from WA was victorious - the team consisting of Ron Mitchell, Mick Kitchens and two substitute players Steve Bennett and Michael Lowe – bringing home the trophy.

The members of the travelling party take this opportunity to thank WARI for their time and sponsorship given to the team. This support allows members to travel and enjoy playing bowls at the carnival which is now becoming a very popular event. WA will host the next carnival in 2016 and the team is very much looking forward to it.
