roaring in the comforts of homeTIME away from home can be a well-earned break for many people – but for Claremont Football Club it was a necessary evil. For the past three-and-a-half years the Tigers have been WAFL gypsies – using several alternate grounds as their ‘home’ venue while their aged facilities received a stunning and much-needed multi-million dollar makeover. They made an impactful return home to the redeveloped Claremont Oval facility in Round 12 against East Fremantle and have now won three consecutive games to edge closer to the top five. The energy levels at Tigerland have soared and the Tigers have their tails in the air leading into the last third of 2017 WAFL season. First year Claremont coach Darren Harris, a premiership player and coach with West Perth, says the players are excitedly settling into their revamped home where the last game at the old ground was played on preliminary final weekend in September 2013. This week, on the back of three straight home game wins, the Tigers are on the road again, heading down the freeway to take on Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah. It cannot be underestimated how big a factor settling into their revamped home had on those three wins, although Harris credits stripping team mechanics back to basics as a major factor in the mid-season resurgence. “Over the last month we have really gone back to basics,” Harris said. “The focus has been on beating your man, playing team defence and being brave enough to take the game on.” The Tigers won their first three games of the year against East Fremantle, Perth and East Perth before falling to six successive losses to South Fremantle, Subiaco, Swan Districts, Peel Thunder, Perth and West Perth.

Heading into Round 15, the Tigers sit one game out of the top five. Their past three wins have come against the Sharks, Swans and Falcons. The loss of prize recruit Tom Lee, who returned to Tigerland after three seasons with St Kilda, has increased the workload for the Tigers forwards. However, Harris said the likes of seasoned campaigners Beau Maister, Ian Richardson and Jack Bradshaw alongside rising star, 20-year-old Eddie Simpson, were working hard to fill the void. “Eddie played just his fourth league game last weekend and he took five contested marks and had a real impact on the game,” Harris said glowingly about one of a number of impressive debutants he has blooded so far this season. “He is talented and works hard on his craft. He is committed and will continue to grow. Eddie kicked two goals on debut in Round 10 and followed that up with three goals in Round 12. “We’ve also brought on young guys like Oliver Eastland who is playing really well with the State 18s at the moment and Ryan Murphy who has come back from a year out of the game to play every game this season.” Lee had shoulder surgery last week that has ruled him out for the rest of 2017. Harris said while South Fremantle and Subiaco were clearly the best and most physically imposing teams in the WAFL, his side was gathering momentum. “The relationships are really starting to grow – between the coaching staff and the players and between the players themselves,” said Harris who brought in a fresh new coaching panel to the Tigers that includes former Falcons Geoff Valentine and Steven Trewhella, West Coast premiership player Andrew Embley, Craig White (South Fremantle), Damien Condon (East Fremantle) and Craig Dalton (North Beach), while former Essendon and

enough to take the game on.” Darren Harris.

Fremantle Kepler Bradley remained at the club in a development capacity. “When you bring in pretty much a whole new coaching staff it takes a while for everyone to get to know each other,” Harris said. “We are getting tighter as a group and no doubt that is bringing with it better results. The buy-in from the players has been exceptional and they are all willing to prepare well and play hard. “Unity amongst the group and building those relationships is something we have pushed pretty hard and it’s starting to come together.” That unity was on display last weekend when the Tigers emerged victorious against the Falcons in a game dedicated to former Tiger Warwick Proudlove who was involved in a freak car accident six years ago and remains in a vegetative state and requires 24-hour care.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Posters are usually among some of the most difficult WAFL collectables to find. It’s pretty obvious why this would be the case. Most of them would have been stuck on a wall with blu-tac and, eventually, in the bin. But Swan Districts supporter Korey came forward last week with a couple of great posters that I hadn’t seen before, and he had managed to keep them in great condition. This was because he had left his footy memorabilia in his mother’s care when he moved out of home. And Korey’s mum didn’t chuck it all in the bin, recently handing it over and telling Korey it was time he took custody of it. The best of the posters was a series of four that was released in 1989 by Swan Districts Football Club. The caricatures on these A3-sized posters were drawn by a “D. Binks” and they feature some of the club’s best known stars of the day – Peter “Midnight” Ware, Brad Shine, Peter Hodyl and Mick Grasso. I wonder whether that was all of them? Does anyone know if there were others? And does anyone know the artist and whether he/she might have any idea about some work they did almost 30 years ago? The other posters in Korey’s collection were a 1991 WAFL promotional poster that would have had pride of place in his collection because it featured Danny Penny holding the 1990 premiership cup, and a “Swans for Premiers 1983” poster that was designed to raise some funding for the National Heart Foundation. Interestingly, the artist who drew the caricature on the 1983 poster was also “D. Binks”.

The past week saw the recent resurgence in the availability of WAFL items at the sales continue. Many of the more interesting items were Football Budgets, especially one for the 1948 State game between WA and Victoria (which sold for $76) and another for the 1946 game between WA and South Australia ($90). A 1959 preliminary final Budget also sold for $33, while a Budget from the grand final decider from that season between East Perth and Subiaco sold for the rather disappointing price of $91. The 1960 grand final Budget fared even worse, fetching only $81. A couple of bulk lots of 1970s Budgets also sold for about $5 each, but not via auction. And last, but not least, a metal mug with a Perth logo sold for $26, though it was badly tarnished. I was also pleased to hear this week from Budget reader Todd, who had a pile of WAFL stickers he had kept from the 1970s. For some reason, I’ve always found it tough to get a handle on all the stickers made during this period. Maybe it’s because several of them, involving Shell and/or radio station 6PM, were of about the same size and shape.

Todd’s stickers were all from the Shell set and the most interesting thing about them was that they used the club logo caricatures that were made famous by a set of posters that was produced by Page Photographics in 1973. Previously, I had only seen the West Perth sticker from this set, so the “borrowed” designs weren’t

immediately obvious to me. But that all changed when Todd sent me the photographs. I would love to know who the artist was for these (the posters and the stickers). But I would also like to see the other stickers from the set. Can anyone help with some photographs or the name of the artist? Finally for this week, I wonder whether anyone might have a spare 2015 grand final mini football, made by Burley, that they might part with? Unfortunately, I missed these when they were given away outside the eastern end of Subiaco Oval before the big game between Subiaco and West Perth. I picked up the 2016 ball before the Peel v Subiaco match, but have been struggling to find the 2015 version.

During 2017, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

A GHOST STORY (Madman Entertainment)With A Ghost Story, acclaimed director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award- winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal—a wholly-unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll. A Ghost Story is in cinemas July 27.

Thanks to MADMAN Entertainment we’re giving away in season double passes to A Ghost Story starring Academy Award winner Casey Affleck and Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara. A unique and contemplative cinema experience, unlike anything you’ve seen before. A GHOST STORY is a thought provoking and genre-bending study of love, life, death, time and space. Critically acclaimed, it features a stunning Academy Award winning and nominated cast.

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened. #SpiderManHomecoming Spider-Man: Homecoming slings into cinemas on July 6.

West PeRtH v sUBiACo

West PerthRecent history: It hasn’t been a great four-week block for the Falcons with three losses to tumble to fifth on the premiership ladder.the question mark: Can the Lions keep the winning run going? Their most recent loss was in mid-March and they’re on an 11-game winning streak. Keep the binoculars on: After building up match fitness in the reserves Adam Cockie has played the past six matches for the Lions and has steadily been increasing his influence on Subiaco in each outing.

SubiacoRecent history: Come forward challengers to the league leaders. Subiaco is two wins and a game in hand ahead of second-placed South Fremantle.the question mark: Can the Lions keep the winning run going? Their most recent loss was in mid-March and they’re on a 11-game winning streak.Keep the binoculars on: After building up match fitness in the reserves Adam Cockie has played the past six matches for the Lions and has steadily been increasing his influence in the Lions in each outing.

the battle: These teams have enjoyed a fierce rivalry over the past decade and West Perth is going to need to build up all the inner anger it can muster if it is to stop the Lions’ roar. And it will be the triple Ms – Trent Manzone, Luke Meadows and Kody Manning who will be able to make the difference for the Falcons as they strive to step in class against Subiaco’s midfield might. Chris Keunen made his first 2017 league appearance for West Perth in the previous round and he will be so much better for the run.

eAst PeRtH v eAst FReMAntLe

East PerthRecent history: The Royals had been getting carried away with a run of success that put them on the cusp of the top five before losses to Subiaco and Swan Districtsthe question mark: How long does East Perth retain the services of busy Luke Partington before he gets his chance with West Coast?Keep the binoculars on: Noranda product Julian Ameduri continues to outshine some of his AFL-listed teammates. He had 17 tackles in a recent outing.

East FremantleRecent history: The gloom is not as thick at Moss St these days but the Sharks have still only won the one match this season. There was a big loss to Peel last week.the question mark: Can the kids continue to fire? Dylan Winton, Lachy Bailey and Leon Pearton have been shining lights for East Fremantle mid-season.Keep the binoculars on: Tim Bristow had a belated start to the season because of injury yet his impact in the past two matches back in the blue and white jumper has been a bonus for the Sharks.

PeRtH v sWAn DistRiCts

the battle: Perth has twice challenged Swan Districts this season only to lack the resources in the second half to snatch victory. But Aidan Tropiano, Brant Colledge, Devin McFarlane, Lennon Marlon and Liam McKenna are going to have to increase the amount of ball supply to the Demons forwards. The Demons only had 38 inside 50m entries in the most recent loss to Swans. And there were only 37 last round. Matt Rogers was the key to the black and whites’ win in round 11. So expect a tougher plan for him when the Perth match committee devises its gameday strategies.

PerthRecent history: The Demons have had a devil of a time in the past five rounds with some heavy losses that have again entrenched the club on the bottom rung of the ladder.the question mark: Will Perth let an advantage slip through its fingers again? Almost four goals up against South Fremantle last week before slipping to a 110-point loss.Keep the binoculars on: Five kicks for four goals was a great return from Callum Papertalk last round and the Demons need a similar haul to trouble the black and whites defence.

Swan DistrictsRecent history: Just when many expected the black and whites to fall from the top five, they get on top of East Perth to move to a 7-5 season tally.the question mark: How influential will Ryan Crowley be to Swans in the run into the finals? The AFL veteran made his WAFL return in the previous round following injury.Keep the binoculars on: The Football Budget hates to gloat but we did forecast earlier this month it wouldn’t be long before Ricky Cary gets a bag of goals. He kicked seven in the last round.

PeeL v CLAReMont

PeelRecent history: Two wins on the trot, including a victory over South Fremantle, have elevated Peel back to third place on the ladder.the question mark: Where will Zac Dawson play this round? The experienced AFL defender is enjoying his stint in attack with the Thunder.Keep the binoculars on: Ryan Nyhuis was a solid defensive contributor to Peel’s premiership campaign during last year’s finals and he has returned to his best form in recent weeks.

ClaremontRecent history: There is no place like home for the Tigers. Since moving back to their regular digs they have won three straight on the Claremont Oval turf.the question mark: Will Matt Davies, Ryan Lim, Bailey Banfield, Ian Richardson and Jye Bolton give Claremont another fast start against the Thunder?Keep the binoculars on: Ryan Lim is in career-best form for the Tigers and there is no coincidence his input has lifted as Claremont returns to the winners’ circle.

the battle: Expect Claremont to go hard early in this contest. When the teams met in Round 8 it was the Tigers’ slow start that proved so costly at the final siren. The contribution of Danyle Pearce was also significant in the victory. But a leg injury last week means his input to the Peel team in this round is in doubt. Yet Cam Shepherd has so many options on his coach’s board. Even if Pearce is unavailable the Thunder engine room can boast Ethan Hughes, Rory O’Brien, Brayden Lawler and Traye Bennell.

the battle: Expect East Perth to make a statement in this contest. The Royals must do so. If they don’t dominate the Sharks there will be serious doubts about whether the team is a worthy WAFL finalist. But East Perth has had to hastily rearrange its defence in recent weeks with co-captain Kyle Anderson injured and experienced duo Eric Mackenzie and Will Schofield joining Tom Barrass back in the Eagles line-up. When the teams met in Round 9, East Perth booted 20 goals from 13 goalkickers. The Sharks simply can’t afford as many Royals running rampant in this encounter.

Deppro WA State 18s defeat AlliesThe Deppro WA State 18s recorded their second victory of the NAB AFL National Championships with a 40-point win over the Allies at Leederville Oval last Sunday, June 25. Western Australia defeated the Allies, consisting of the best players from the NAB AFL Academy Series, 12.12 (84) to 6.8 (44). WA controlled the play early, with Claremont’s Callan England collecting 13 possessions in the first quarter on his way to a game-high 26. Jaxon Cahill (East Perth) and Brayden Ainsworth (Subiaco) had 23 disposals each. However, WA didn’t make an impact on the scoreboard until the second quarter when Ian Hill (Perth) and Oliver Eastland (Claremont) both kicked their second goals to extend WA’s lead to 25 points at half-time. The Allies hit back with three consecutive goals in the third term and reduced the margin to nine points before WA steadied with a late goal to Lachlan Mitchell (Peel Thunder) to push the lead back out to 16 points at the last break. WA then took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Allies four goals to one to seal the win. Ian Hill, Oliver Eastland, Oscar Allen and Brandon Starcevich kicked two goals each for WA.

State 16s and 17s The Deppro WA State 16s also recorded a win after a thrilling comeback against South Australia before the 18s match last Sunday. After trailing by 18 points mid-way through the fourth quarter, WA kicked the last four goals of the game to win by a goal 12.13 (85) to 11.13 (79). Rhai Arn Cox kicked the sealer after taking a mark in the goal square with less than two minutes left, which followed goals from Tarkyn Brogan-Henry, Jack Buller and Anthony Davis.

Davis had 23 touches to go with his three goals, while Riley Garcia collected 21 possessions and kicked one goal and Jack Buller had 15 possessions and one goal. The State 17s were defeated by South Australia 13.7 (85) to 11.10 (76) in their game at HBF Arena.

There are two levels of accreditation - Level 1 (Development) is the first stage and umpires at the senior community football level undertake Level 2, or Advanced Umpire Accreditation. Both levels of umpire accreditation consist of three parts – field, boundary and goal umpire accreditation.

Level 1 (Development) 1. The umpire needs to demonstrate

competency in one match (minimum) – per the AFL Level 1 Accreditation match day check sheet

2. Registers online with the AFL and completes the Level 1 online learning component

3. Participates in the AFL National Umpiring Curriculum Coaching Lessons (Level 1)

Level 2 (Advanced)1. Match day competency on three occasions

(AFL level 2 match day check sheet)2. The umpire uses a reflective diary and

discusses their performance with his/her umpire coach.

3. Participates in the AFL National Umpiring Curriculum Coaching Lessons (Level 2)

WAFC Manager Umpire Pathways Tim Priest said it was vitally important that umpires at all levels attain accreditation. “Player welfare and safety is a key consideration for participants and their parents when deciding whether to register to play football,” he said. “Umpire competency and training through accreditation is therefore crucial to ensuring football is a safe and attractive sport for all participants.”

WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said it was a primary focus for his coaching team this season, which has seen 125 registered WAFL field umpires undergo assessment for accreditation. “It was a huge effort and our umpires and coaches are to be congratulated for completing the extensive accreditation process,” he said. Anyone interested in learning more about the online learning aspect of umpiring can visit www.afl.com.au/umpires/courses

Ramadan Dinner hosted by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) and AFL.

A host of special guests attended the dinner at Domain Stadium on Wednesday, June 21 including the Minister of Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Hon. Paul Papalia MLA, and Principle Policy Advisor Jane Ardern. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which marks a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in Australia. The dinner is designed to promote cross-cultural understanding between those of the Islamic faith and the wider community using football as common ground. WAFC Community Engagement Manager Paul Mugambwa said it was important we highlight the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcome new communities to embrace in the future. “It’s important the WAFC continues to reach out to culturally and linguistically diverse players to further grow the game and build better, stronger communities,” Mugambwa said. “Football has extraordinary power in uniting all people of all backgrounds and it’s crucial we continue to develop ways in which everyone can be a part of the sport.” While sharing a buffet meal of Middle Eastern cuisine, participants also heard from special guest speakers Ahmed Saad, Multicultural and Bachar Houli Programs Coordinator and Sheikh Wael Ibrahim who performed the call to prayer and discussed the importance of Ramadan.

Sixth-placed Kalamunda faced off with third placed Fremantle CBC at Ray Owen Reserve on Saturday. Fremantle CBC went into the match as favourites with an impressive eight wins and three losses for the season. However, despite their ladder positions, Kalamunda held off Fremantle CBC to record an 8.12 (60) to 8.8 (56) victory. They were helped up forward by their coach Justin Simpson who kicked three goals for the match. The two sides met in Round 2 this year with Fremantle CBC taking the four points on that

This time last year they were sitting in ninth position with just three wins, however after Saturday’s win the Cougars move into fifth spot. Kalamunda have had a difficult couple of years in A Grade having finished just one place off relegation for the past two seasons. Can You Help?Since open football recommenced after WW2 (1945) there have been 6370 WAFL league debutants in 72 seasons at an average of 89 new players per season. The WAFL player database is now missing birth details for only 81 of these players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of up to six players for whom any information or family contact is sought. These include:

a.G. andeRSOn (Claremont 1945, 7 games). leonard Stanley donald day (Perth 1959-60, 9 games). Died 1991 Mandurah. bradley GRay (Subiaco 1986, 3 games). a. JOneS (Perth 1946, 4 games). bernard henry KinG (Subiaco 1954, 1 game). Died 2015 Baldivisdonald William Graham MillaR (East Perth 1947-50, 16 game). Ex Boulder City, died 2010

Any information that could help lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e mail [email protected] or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission
