Level Three at Waihi College Students take 7 subjects at Year 13 and are aiming to gain 80 credits over the year to gain their NCEA Level

3 Certificate. They should select subjects that relate to their interests and future career. If unsure it is best

that students select a range of subjects that will both keep their future options open and provide them

with a programme that they are interested in.

Of the 7 subjects students pick they may select 6 traditional full year courses.

They also need to select a Super Tuesday Course which will be either a full

year course or two half year courses.

Super Tuesday is an experience based course that allows students to experience something

new. It may stem from an interest that students haven’t tried before, a skill that students

see as valuable for their future career or develop a skill set that prepares them for the work

force. It is also an opportunity for students to work at in multilevel class with students

having a range of ages and abilities.

These courses are completed over 3 periods on a Tuesday and are experience based. The

intention is to develop skills and values that are not always assessed in the classroom but are

valuable in society and the workforce.

What Next? Read through the courses in this booklet making a note of the ones that

interest you, follow your career path or sound like they might be courses

you would like to try

Choose SIX subjects that you would like to take as options for 2020

Choose SUPER TUESDAY courses (either 2 half year courses or 1 full year

course)

Complete the google form shared with you with your

preferred subject choices for 2020. (Please note this is NOT final subject selection)

Level 3 Music

Course Outline: This course is almost entirely practical and is based around two aspects of the music curriculum: Performing and composing (with an option to do the music theory external). This course involves a lot of independent work and requires a fair bit of time management. As a part of the course students will get lessons on the instrument of their choice (a chosen instrument that they will focus on for the duration of the course), perform as a soloist, perform as a group and create their own music (either digitally or in written form, depending on personal preferences). For level 3 students have more choice and customisation options to suit their needs/preferences as it is possible to get meet all requirements just through composing music and writing songs. The courses written below are examples of courses often used in this way but others are possible if students prefer musicology, music theory, performance or composition.

Level 3 History Course Outline: History is the study of the past in order to understand the present. This information helps make decisions that influence the future. Expect structured, activity based lessons where you will sometimes be expected to work in groups on hands on activities. You must be prepared to READ (although you don’t need to be brilliant at it!) and participate at all times. The 2020 topics have yet to be decided, but they will include one international topic, and one New Zealand history topic. For the first internal we’ll study a topic together, and you’ll prepare a short film, presentation or report that examines the causes and consequences of an event. The second internal is a fairly academic essay that reviews different historians’ perspectives on an important slice of New Zealand’s history. We’ll take it step by step. No previous experience of History is required!

The 2nd external, the “sources” paper, is a fantastic “wildcard” for those looking extra credits at the end of the year. The topic is unknown, so it is very difficult to prepare for. It is a “skills” paper that tests you on your general understanding of causes, consequences, continuity, reliability and usefulness.
