When I first started painting, I thought art was for a selected few, but as I started painting my emotions- the pain of losing my mother, shame from molestation, confusion of my identity as a new mother, fear of not being enough or even being too much - I found art reshaped me. My work shares this reconciliation of the wild and sacred part within myself. Painting and poetry have helped me find my voice, embrace fear and courageously step forward to live my vision. I believe everyone can find healing through art. I hope my work inspires others and reminds them of their own healing and heart opening.” Amber Bonnici’s artwork is part of the contemporary symbolist movement and has been shown at the United Nations as part of the “Soul Fire Collection” featuring 42 Women artists from around the world. From the Board...This month's column is from Lauren Avery, Board member.

STARFISH

As the old man walked down a beach at dawn, he saw ahead ofhimwhat he thought to be a dancer. The youngmanwas runningacross the sand, rhythmically bending down to pick up a strandedstarfish and then threw it far into the sea.

The old man gazed in wonder as the young soul again and againthrew the small starfish from the sand into thewater. Theoldmanapproached him and asked why he spent so much energy doingwhat seemed a waste of time. The youngman explained that thestranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun.

"But there are thousands of miles of beach, and miles and milesof starfish. How can your effort make any difference?

The youngman looked down at the small starfish in his hand, andas he threw it to safety in the sea, he said, "It makes a differenceto this one!"

In our lives,we can "walk on by" and leave the starfish to the nextperson, or we can stop and make a difference with ourcontribution.Aswe lookahead towards the future of theWaimeaArts Council and the Firehouse Gallery organization, now is thetime to "stop" and make a difference - by volunteering to join acommittee, sitting theGallery more than your commitment callsfor, attending a board meeting, and voting for the next Board ofDirectors . Whetheryoustop right now to throw that starfishbackinto the sea or you pause and make a contribution later - theimportant thing is tomake that contribution. Making adifferenceone starfish at a time!

A Framing Tip from the Gallery CommitteeWhen your art is hung in the Firehouse Gallery, it ishung on "curtain hooks" which secure the work safely to thesoft wall covering - two hooks are used for security on mostpieces. Because there is a drop from the top of the hook tothe bottomwhere the wire on the back of the artwork hangs,it's important not to put thewire too high on the frame.Whenthewire is too high, part of the curtain hook is visible, whichdetracts from the artwork.

A good rule of thumb is to attach the wire so that it falls atleast 3 inches from the top of the frame at it's highest point(in the center). If you do that, the hangar will not show.

The Gallery committee wants to display your art to it'sbest advantage!

"As far as I am concerned, a painting speaks for itself. What is the use of giving explanations, when all is saidand done? A painter has only one language" ~PabloPicasso

"The world today doesn't make sense, so why should Ipaint pictures that do?" ~Pablo Picasso
