Wainuiomata High School’s top athletes were recognised for their achievements throughout the year at last week’s sports awards.
Awards were handed out to ath-letes in all sports, many of whom have represented Wellington and New Zealand.
Sportsman of the year was given to Raymond Seumanu for his achievements in boxing, winning multiple national titles as well as the Australian Golden Gloves.
He became one of the youngest winners of the award.
The sportswomen of the year award was awarded to Sieni Samau for her achievements in a wide range of sports.
Sieni was also the top player in volleyball, girls rugby, was the top scorer in football, was the best back in league, played for Wainuiomata in club rugby and league, going on to represent Wellington in both sports.
On top of that Sieni was also selected for the New Zealand rugby league Kiwi Ferns side to play Australia next year
The MC, Phillip Kauika who
says that the school has achieved to a high standard this year in all sports.
“Many teams have made fi nals, won championships or have represented the school at regional tournaments.”
Teams who won their grades included the girls cricket team, the football fi rst XI, teams two and three in netball, the boys fi rst xv in rugby and the junior boys league team.
This year was also the fi rst year that Ignite Sports presented two special awards, both recognising character in an athlete and coach.
Trust co-ordinator Kevin Goldsbury says that the awards are given to those that embodied Ignite Sport’s values.
“Despite the attention that poor behaviour and bad sportsman-ship attracts, there are great examples of athletes who demon-strate positive character in sport and coaches who effectively model it,” Kevin says.
This year’s winners were Paa Mailangi who won the character athlete award and Ngaire Blake who won the character coach award.
Both showed great passion for
Sporting achievements recognised
their sports and teams, helping their teams achieve their best.
Kalena Hura was also recog-nised by the school, receiving the principals award after 20 years’ service to school netball.
Other award winners were Stephen Graham, Joel Carman, Atiria Semmens, Jade Hum-
phrey and Brooke Tauaneai.School Principal Martin Isberg
says he was not surprised by the achievements of the students this year.
“We have spent the last three or four years changing the culture of the school, and the results this year are recognition of this.”
One sure sign of summer arriving is the call of the shin-ing cuckoo, a series of upward notes followed by one or more long downward slurring notes. The birds have come back to New Zealand to breed after wintering over in the Solomon Islands. They can be heard calling from forest, scrub and farmland, which are also the habitats of their host birds, the grey warbler. Like cuckoos around the world the shining cuckoo lays its eggs in another bird’s nest.
Also called the bronze shining cuckoo, scientifi c name Chryso-coccyx lucidas, or in Maori the PipiWharauroa, this sparrow-sized bird is usually not seen due to its cryptic markings and its size. It’s New Zealand’s only iridescent green bird and has green and white bands across its chest. The shining cuckoo lives on grubs and insects, including hairy caterpillars and ladybirds that other birds avoid.
It lays a single egg in the nest of a laying grey warbler, and the chick when it hatches ejects
the warbler eggs and chicks. The host then seems not to notice it’s parenting another species and continues to raise the chick. Fortunately for the grey warbler species, it has usually already raised a brood in August/September before the cuckoo arrives back in New Zealand.
A few years ago we heard a sound from the bush that could have been a bird or an insect, but even with the neighbours’ help we couldn’t fi nd what it was coming from. One day
however, I heard it in the beech tree outside the window, and looked out to see the cuckoo chick flitting from branch to twig noisily demanding food from a smaller and very busy grey warbler.
The two major threats to the shining cuckoo are fl ying into windows and being taken by cats. You can hear its call and learn more about it here. www.radionz.co.nz/nation-al/programmes/thiswayup/collections/birdwatching/shiningcuckoo

SpeedlimitsBuses and Parking major problem for child care centres
By Aaron Meredith
Speeding buses and a lack of parking are two of the problems facing teachers, parents and children in early childhood centres in Wainuiomata.
There is little to no road signs outside of many centres in the valley warning drivers to slow down.
Jack and Jill Kindergarten has been fi ghting with New Zealand Buses for many years, fi nally asking Hutt South MP Trevor
Mallard for help.It is only since he got involved
the bus company has responded. The kindergarten has two signs
warning drivers of the centre, but these were only put up after a child was hit by a car a few years back.
“It is only a matter of time before someone gets hit again.” says head teacher Chris Moses.
“I understand the drivers are on a schedule, but they are going so fast.”

Last week a free neigh-bourhood barbecue was held at the Norfolk Street shops, attracting around 100 residents.
The barbecue was hosted by MP Trevor Mallard, Councillor Campbell Bar-ry and community board member Josh Briggs.
It was the second neigh-bourhood barbecue the trio has hosted, they plan to hold more over the sum-mer months.
Councillor Barry says the trio sees it as a great way to connect with local
people.“It is a chance to see
how we can help with any issues people may have.
“It is also a great way for neighbours to interact with each other.”
The next barbecue is planned for January and the trio are open to sug-gestions on where the next one should be held.
If you would like the next barbecue to be held in your neighbourhood contact Campbell on 027 216 0364 or [email protected].

Ariana’s older sister was once the school’s deputy head girl and Ariana has aimed to be-come a head student since then.
Ariana is very much into her art, and even helped create the Anzac mural which is on dis-play in the Wainuiomata War Memorial Community Hall.
Michael Martin is next year’s head boy, he is hoping to con-tinue the good work of the previous head students.
Michael was encouraged to put his name forward to be head boy by his rugby coaches, who say he is a natural leader.
Along with being in the First XV, Michael has also repre-sented Wellington at various age grade levels.
Namish Gounder has been named as the deputy head boy, after being encouraged to go for the position by his form teacher.
Namish plays for the school’s
football First XI, he feels it is the head student’s job to make students at the school feel proud to be at Wainuiomata High School.
“It is important everyone enjoys going to school.”
Ariana feels it is important students feel like they know the head students.
“Getting to know everyone in the school is very important.”
Michael agrees with Ariana and says it is important the
team of head students represent the school well.
“We need to keep the positive attitude in the school and the community going, it is impor-tant people feel they can send their children to this school.”
Trevor Mallard with the community at the latest community barbecue.

Bee Healthy dental therapy assistant Otessa Tuisila of Wainuiomata is the proud recipient of the fi rst Pacifi c Oral Health Scholarship.
The scholarship is one of three which was made available to the greater Wellington regional dental service thanks to funding from the Ministry of Health this year for students of Pacific origin undertaking a Bachelor of Oral Health, Dental Therapy, with the University of Otago.
The scholarships aim to increase the numbers of Pacifi c dental therapists taking care of the oral health of children and young people in the Wellington region. Having dental therapists who share the culture of the children and families they are working with, better addresses the oral-health needs of Pacifi c people.
Otessa says she is thrilled with her achieve-ment.
“Opportunities like this don’t come along that often and being successful is a massive push for my confi dence.”
Originally from Samoa, Otessa came with her family to live in Wainuiomata when she was 12 years old. She had never been to a dentist.
“I needed so many fi llings and tooth extrac-tions and found it really hard spending many hours in the dentist chair.”
At 21 she is the youngest of six children and on graduation will be the fi rst in her family to achieve a degree. Otessa says she had never considered a career in oral health and after leaving Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt, eventually moved to Australia and worked in retail. After having a young daughter she
Scholarship awarded to dental therapy assistant
moved back to Wainuiomata and saw an advertisement for a dental therapist assistant position.
She applied, was successful and found the hands-on work so fascinating that she applied
for the scholarship. Otessa is due to travel to the University of Otago next year to begin her study. Once she is fully qualifi ed she work at a DHB in the Wellington region for at least two years.

With the help of Youth Inspire, Tyler Jones has found what could be his dream job, being a lifeguard at the Wainuiomata Pools.
Tyler recently completed his training, with the help of Youth Inspire and two Hutt Valley businesses who paid for his training, which totalled around $350.
“Youth Inspire have been awesome for me, and the staff here have been extremely supportive,” says Tyler.
“I always wanted a job in sport, when the opportunity came up I decided to go for it.”
Tyler is contracted to Hutt City Council, and is trained to work at every pool around the region, but will stay in Wainuiomata throughout the summer.
Ali Black from Youth Inspire says it is a real career path for Tyler.
“All the pool managers started as life-guards, there is a defi nite path for those who want it.”
While completing the training, Tyler
Skipper-King from Youth Inspire was down at the pools with Tyler every morning going through the same as his client.
This was something Tyler found was great.
“All the support they have given me is great, it really helped.”
Youth Inspire is always looking for local businesses to support the scheme by offer-ing employment or training.
If you are interested, pop into the offi ce, situated at the Wainuiomata Library.

Local man Josh Briggs is get-ting behind Movember for his fourth consecutive year, and has big goals this time around.
Movember raises awareness around men’s health, encour-aging men around the world to get themselves checked for any health issues.
“I want everyone to match the $20 that I donated fi rst, I know it is a large amount of money, but it does make it a large contribution,” Josh says.
The aim this time is to raise around $200, but he also wants people to have the conversa-tion about men’s health.
This year Movember or-ganisers are concentrating on four different aspects around men’s health, covering pros-tate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and also raising awareness around inactivity.
The physical activity portion has given Josh the inspira-tion to compete in the Mot-atapu race in Queenstown next March.
“There are various aspects to the race but I will be doing the 15km run.
“Movember has just given me the chance to get started in the training aspect.”
Over the years it has become a common sight to see many moustaches around at this time of year, some being quite unique designs.
This year Josh is going for a simple handlebar design, after consulting friends via Facebook.
“There was also a suggestion to dye my mo blue, this may happen, I am not too sure yet,” Josh says.If you want to get behind Josh, head to www.mobro.co/joshbriggs.

Making something creative out of something discarded, old, or unusual is the theme of this year’s Lower Hutt Christ-mas tree exhibition, ‘Re-Tree’.
Cyndi Christensen, CBD development manager says, “It’s all about creating some-thing from the things we fi nd around us, and it’s a way of showing you can be creative using non-traditional items to make something beautiful.”
“Take a fresh look at objects around you – with some new thinking you could make them
into an interesting Christmas tree.”Entries in ‘Re-Tree, Cen-tral Hutt’s’ Christmas tree exhibition, will be displayed in an empty storefront in the CBD, and may win the prize of $500 plus some exciting gift vouchers.
The tree designs should be unique, there is no size re-quirement, but they should be transportable. There are
four categor ies, Found Object s , Kiwi Christmas, Art/Creative and Science, Technol-ogy, Engineering, M a n u f a c t u r i n g and Mathematics (STEMM) Fest.
All trees will need to have lights included, preferably LED. There’s around a month to put a tree together, as entries close on Friday December 4.

Children from Upoko Ko-hanga Reo treated shoppers in the Wainuiomata Mall to a treat on Friday.
The children were down to decorate their Christmas tree at the shopping centre so the teachers decided to get the children to sing carols at the same time.
The group sung various carols in Maori, entertaining the small
crowd that quickly surrounded the children.
The mall is full of Christmas trees schools have decorated.
Tim Bryan says the mall is looking extremely good with all the trees inside.
“It is good to see when I come down here, it really makes it seem like Christmas is near.
“It is great to see all the schools getting involved and decorating the trees, some are really talented.”

Sales people from The Professionals Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata have put their support behind children and their families who are suffering with cancer.
The team has donated a hamper packed with all sorts of Christmas goodies to a family they felt really needs it.
The Professionals team understands Christ-mas can be a hard time for families who have a child diagnosed with cancer, so they wanted to make a difference this festive season.
Marketing Manager Luke Pirie would like to acknowledge the work of Diane Cummings, Luke Jansen, Pauline West, Sally Saunders, Shane Brockelbank, Sharyn Paaka-Palalei, Shellene Eksteen and Wayne Barton.

“Me and my family used to live in Wainuiomata as well.”
Rik grew up in Brugge, Belgium and learned how to make chocolates in his home country.
He moved to New Zea-land when he was 28, working in various jobs
before settling on his love of making chocolates for a living.
“Wainuiomata always supports me well, I enjoy coming over here,” he says.
Rik plans to be in his normal spot outside the old Video Ezy store every Saturday for the rest of the year, something that pleases a lot of Wainuio-mata locals.

Dear Ed. I was about to cross the road and police car came by, did a u turn and pulled up next to me.
I wasn’t quite sure why they stopped but we had a quite chat and they drove off.
As I looked at the police car drive off, it had safer commu-
nities written on the back and then I realised, I had my new walking stick they probably were making sure people in the community were safe.
I can proudly say my walking stick had no deadly weapon in it like John Steed from the adventures TV program or a
James Bond movie.I like to give the lads some
praise for making our com-munity safe and preventing crime rather than waiting to clean up the after effects of crime.
Perhaps on top that we should should give the Wainuiomata
police station a big tick for their work they do in making the community safe too.
What lot people do not know the Police Act has a section on Human Rights and the police do their best to look after Human rights on top of that.

Enliven’s Woburn Home in Lower Hutt is getting into the Christmas spirit with an array of Christmas themed activities and performances leading up to Christmas Day.
Recently more than 40 residents were treated to traditional bell songs and Christmas carols performed by the Wellington Bell Choir.
Woburn Home recreation officer Samantha Murdoch says the choir was a musical treat at the home.
“The Bell Choir was a real talent and everyone enjoyed the music and the visual per-formance. It was certainly something different!”
Samantha says Christmas time is always a special time at Woburn Home and this year the home has four different
Christmas parties planned. “We’re having Christmas
parties for the different parts of our home as well as our day programme, so we’re going to be very busy,” says Samantha.
“We have organised special food, decorations and enter-tainment for these events, and we have invited family and friends along.”
Woburn Home manager Stewart Clark says Christmas time at Woburn Home is like sharing Christmas Day with one big extended family.
“It’s like one big family here. While the elders live here because they need extra support with their day-to-day living, it has become home for them,” Stewart explains.
“Many of the elders have told me they enjoy living
here because they never feel lonely - they have adopted a big extended family of fellow residents, volunteers and staff who they have come to know so well, and Christmas time is certainly very special here because of that.”
Woburn Home is operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profi t organisation Pres-byterian Support Central, and provides rest home, hospital, and dementia care as well as respite, health recovery and a popular day guest pro-gramme.

Harcourts Wainui would like to congratulate Tamariki Ferguson
for his 1st place design in the “Welcome to Wainuiomata”
Sign Competition for 2015! The team here at Harcourts, along with
our local councillor, Campbell Barry, would like to invite all of the Wainuiomata Community, including our fantastic designers & judges, to a FREE Community BBQ outside the Harcourts Wainuiomata offi ce this Thursday (17th Dec) from 11.30am – 1.00pm to come and celebrate with us.
We, here at Harcourts, had a blast running this competition over the last couple of months and it was fantastic to see so many people (the voting post on Facebook reached over 14,000) in the community supporting something so positive and having the opportunity to voice their opinions on how they wanted to welcome visitors into our community. An extra “Congratulations” must also go out to all of the other designers, particularly the rest of our top 4 (Jan Almond, Nicola Jones and Jess Thimbleby) - you were all very deserving designers and did some really great work so, a big “Thank you very much”. We’d also like to Thank the panel of judges who selected the design fi nalists – Trevor Mallard, Linda Olsen & Ruth O’Grady.
When talking about the inspiration for his winning design, Tamariki said that “... it comes from our community itself. A diverse range of cultures that live in a
vibrant and growing place that is unique to anywhere else in the Wellington region...The 2 carved posts on the sides (Pou) are like spiritual Guardians welcoming people to and protecting our community. These will be adorned with carvings/symbols from each of the 5 continents (All cultures) represented in Wainuiomata as well.
The 3 Green curved lines represent the rivers/creeks that run through our valley, The Hill shaped top represents the hills that surround us and the brushed steel plate represents the contemporary way forward. The 3 shades of GREEN represent the colour with which our community is most identifi able with/for out on the sports/recreational fi elds. Although modern in look, having traditionally carved posts pays homage to our Tangata Whenua and Early Settlers to the Valley.”
Tamariki will work alongside Campbell Barry & the council to see his design now come to life. We look forward to seeing his fantastic creation up on the hill, welcoming visitors to our community in the near future.
A huge Congratulations once again Tamariki and a big Thank you to all of the Wainuiomata community for your fantastic support throughout the competition.

Christmas lights up Wainuiomata
Christmas can be a season of great joy.
It is a time of God showing His great love for us.
It can be a time of healing and renewed strength.
Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child.
God sent his son, Jesus, into the world to be born.
His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event.
They knew this was no ordinary baby.
The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before.
The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child.
A time to remember

Every Saturday the car park at Life City Church is occupied with locals selling fresh food to Wainuiomata.
Bob Fiddes and Eru Tuhoro set up shop at the car park, in an effort to bring Wai-nuiomata fresh, high quality food.
Bob or Grocer Bob according to some, set up his Veggie Shop in August this year, so locals had the option of buying market quality vegetables without having to head over the hill.
“I decided to set up shop here so people did not have to go all the way to the River-bank Market in Lower Hutt.
“I originally came on Tuesdays along
with the fi sh guy, we quickly extended to weekends as well.”
Right next to Bob on Saturdays is Eru Tuhoro, who sells Cook Island style hangi food.
The qualifi ed chef uses his grandmothers recipe, his grandmother was one of the reasons he set up the stall on Saturday.
“This was my grandmothers vision, I am carrying on her legacy here.”
Both Bob and Eru say locals have really got behind them both, and they enjoy every Saturday.
Bob and Eru are at Life City Church car park every Saturday. Bob is also in the area on Tuesdays along with the very popular Fish Truck.
Saturday feastsGrocer Bob in his Veggie truck.
Dear Ed. I read your article in the Wainuiomata News on Nigel Llong’s decision and I too was furi-ous on such a blatant miscarriage of justice and fair play that had an absolutely unfair impact on that game and the series at a crucial time. So important that one knew at that moment that both game and series were very likely irreparably damaged and a fair contest likely
destroyed from that point on. This subsequently proved to be the case.
What I have been waiting to see is the Media raise the question of ‘match fi xing’ as this individual had such a profound effect on what was a fair and intriguing contest. Is this umpire a protected species? His action was inexplicable, it was clearly seen by everyone but that individual to be wrong and no
one has checked out why and the obvious match fi xing possibilities that accrue. It is hard to imagine a more obvious match fi xing exam-ple. Chris Cairns or Lou Vincent would never have survived such an obvious and inexplicable fi x.
If a player had made such a pro-found incorrect move that changed a game and a series I have no doubt the match fixing question
would have been raised, examined and commented on and likely investigated offi cially. In this case not a peep.
Why is that? I am still hopeful someone will raise the question and demand answers.
So Aaron I felt your article was the closest I have read to maybe raising that question and I hope someone looks at this possibility or
at least asks the question. At this stage the records un-
fairly denigrate the New Zealand Team’s efforts forever and a likely incompetent and possible crooked Umpire remains unchallenged and squeaky clean and in fact already has another opportunity to continue his questionable practices for which we have had no logical explanation.
Dennis

Fernlea Primary School got a little bit scary last week, holding a spooky disco to raise money for the school.
Students dressed up as ghosts and gob-
lins, staff at the school say the costumes were some of the best they have ever seen.
In this photo, teacher Anthony Kleinjan and students Ruby Keomary, Sophie Neary, Lily Carr and Prashvi Shankar show off their costumes.

What can I say, has somebody been reading my mind. I Totally agree with Lance’s article.
Put the car park back and make it even bigger.
May I also add that it was a good stopping area for cars and buses to stop to cool down after over heat-ing, for cyclist to stop and catch their breath, and for myself to stop
and eat my steak and kidney pie and take time out to ponder life.
Get rid of that pile of dirt!CheersLance Thompson Snr

Wainuiomata local Suzanne Yee has joined illustrious company after winning the senior womens 61kg Kumite grade at the World Go Ryu Karate Championships last month.
The championships were held in Auckland between November 26 and 29 with 26 countries represented at the meet.
Suzanne defeated a fi ghter from the Czech Republic in the fi nal, with a score of 3-0.
“The Czech Republic fi ghter came second in the last Go Ju Ryu World Champs, is currently the European Open Champ and came third in the USA Nationals earlier in the year,” says Suzanne.
“It’s an awesome achieve-
ment that my family, friends and I are all proud of.”
The title was a real family affair with Suzanne’s brother Raymond coaching her throughout the tournament.
“I don’t think I would have done it without him.”
Raymond won New Zea-land’s fi rst ever world gold medal in 1994 and his experi-ence proved vital.
Suzanne started karate when she was nine years old, gaining her black belt when she was 14.
She fi rst represented New Zealand in 1997 and has re-cently returned from a seven year break from the sport.
The break didn’t stop her from claiming the national title in her grade, earning selection for the New Zealand team for the world champion-
ships.With the tournament being
held in New Zealand, many of Suzanne’s family were in attendance.
This included her partner, mum and her one year old daughter.
“Everyone was super happy and my family were defi nitely over the moon about it, with the tournament held in New Zealand my family were able to share the experience fi rst-hand.
“It was a great feeling for both them and me.”
During the tournament, Suzanne was also part of the team which fi nished second, losing to Germany in the fi nal.
In the run up to the tourna-ment Suzanne trained three times a week at Karate train-
Karate world champion
ing, she also woke up at 5am and trained on her lunch breaks in order to spend as much time as possible with her family.
Suzanne also plays rugby for Wainuiomata and also represented the Wellington Maori Women’s side.
Last Thursday saw the beginning of the International Cricket season in New Zealand, the real begin-ning of summer.I, like many others around the country, have tuned in at every opportunity to watch the cricket, but I do have one concern this year, not about the New Zealand team, it’s about our opposition. We seem to be in a never ending series with Sri Lanka, I can’t count how many times New Zealand have played them in the last few
years, I just know it is a lot.We played them last summer before the world cup, I can re-member us playing them a couple of years beforehand. After Sri Lanka we play Pakistan, we played them just before the world cup also, but at least we do not play them as often as Sri Lanka. Finally we play Australia, in the return series to the one we have just completed. The big problem with the current
ICC test programme is there is only 10 teams, so there is a repeti-tive feel about the series.Currently Australia, India and England play each other the most, they are the biggest test nations, they bring in the most money, they get to choose what they want to do when it comes to playing. The West Indies get to play the top nations reasonably regularly, due to the history they hold in the game, South Africa gets to play them on a regular basis as well
as they are one of the top sides in the world. We get stuck playing Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or Pakistan most years, plus the occasional tour of or by Zimbabwe. The ICC needs to let a few more nations play test cricket. Ireland have wanted to for years, the UAE have all the talent in the world, so do Kenya, Scotland have all the resources and the Netherlands have been playing cricket at a high level for years.
Our summer of Cricket has started

Shane Richardson is ready for this years races.
A brand new bike for a brand new seasonBy Aaron Meredith
Local motorbike racer Shane Richardson is ready to unleash his new bike in this summers’ races.
He has made the move to a Kawasaki ZX6R, and believes this is the year he will make some real strides in his career.
“I am on the right bike with the right mind-set, so there is no reason why we shouldn't be at the top,” says Shane.
This year’s fi elds are amongst the tough-est Shane has come up against, something that excites the young Wainuiomata rider.
“We have some good internationals in our class this season, which will make things quite interesting.
“One who races in world endurance, and is currently third in the world, and another who is on the world superbike grid for 2016 plus a whole heap more.
“This will shake things up for sure but we will fi ght with all we have and make sure it is enough.”
Shanes fi rst assignment is the Suzuki Series running through December, he then moves on to the New Zealand Superbike Championship in January and March.
Shane has also entered in the Battle of the Streets in Paeroa on February 21.
