Garland Independent School District DATE: November 13, 2015 TO: All Principals All Assistant Principals FROM: Linda Burleson Area Director RE: Field Trip Manual Updates _______________________________________________________________________ A recent change to Title I requirements now permits campuses to utilize Title I funds for appropriate field trips. To qualify, a trip must meet the following conditions:

is identified in the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA); is included in the Campus Improvement Plan (CIP); is allocable, reasonable, and necessary to carry out the intent and purpose of

the grant program; includes an instructional activity or activities that cannot be conducted through

interactive activities in the classroom or on campus; will result in a positive impact on student achievement; includes instruction that addresses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

(TEKS); and includes an evaluation of the field trip that measures the impact on student

achievement. In order to facilitate the appropriate use and documentation of these funds, the GISD Field Trip Manual has been updated accordingly. In particular, campuses should note revisions to the Field Trip Checklist and Field Trip Request forms (pgs. 29-31), as well as a new approval process (pg. 6 and attached flowchart) , three new forms (pgs. 32-34), and a revised method of requesting buses when Title I funds are utilized (pg. 14). The updated versions of these documents are available on the Intranet. Please do not hesitate to contact me or your Federal Programs liaison with any questions.

In the event of a GP&L power outage these units maintain power to the district’s data center until the backup generator comes on line. The Toshiba Technician will be working with Larry Stinnett and an electrician from the district’s Electrical Department beginning at 8:00 AM. The generator will be running prior to both units being taken down and will continue to do so until they are brought back on line and the data center is returned to city power. We expect this maintenance to be completed by late afternoon with no system availability being affected. Please contact Larry Stinnett ([email protected] ), Technology Project Manager if you have any questions or concerns.

STUDENT SAFETYA critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the classroom response to an incident at school. Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration.

SRPOur school is expanding the safety program to include the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). The SRP is based on these four actions. Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter. In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be called on the PA.

LOCKOUT - “Secure the Perimeter”LOCKDOWN - “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”EVACUATE - “To the Announced Location”SHELTER - “For a Hazard Using a Safety Strategy”

DATE: November 13, 2015 TO: Campus Administrators and Data Clerks FROM: Wendy Brower, Student Services Coordinator RE: Documentation for non-parent guardian(s) __________________________________________________________________ In an effort to update student records and documentation, all non-parent guardians will be receiving a letter requesting that they update the documentation on file for any active students for whom they have accepted responsibility. Non-parent guardians may come to Student Services to obtain and notarize any necessary documents free of charge. Data clerks are asked to assist us in the process:

For students in foster care, scan/email a copy of the Form 2085E to Crystal Benitez

For students with an Agreement for Parental Child Safety Placement (PCSP), have the non-parent guardian complete the Student Residency Questionnaire (SRQ) and the Affidavit for Eligibility for Enrollment of a Minor Student and scan/email to Crystal Benitez

For students whose non-parent guardian produces a court order (signed by judge and recorded by the court) awarding guardianship, the relationship to student on Skyward should be updated to “guardian”

If none of the above situations apply, and the student is still in their care, please have the non-parent guardian complete the SRQ and the Affidavit for Eligibility for Enrollment of a Minor Student. Scan/Email the SRQ to Crystal Benitez. OR

If the student is no longer in their care, obtain the name, relationship to student, and contact information for the responsible person. That person will then need to provide the appropriate documentation.

All original documents should be placed in the student’s cumulative folder. For non-parent guardians with more than one student enrolled in the district, the SRQ need only be completed once.

DATE: November 13, 2016 TO: Elementary Principals Secondary Principals FROM: Nelson Orta, Director of Organizational Learning RE January 4, 2016 Flex – Day Strategic Plan Goal 5 _______________________________________________________________________ Teachers can stay home on January 4th. That’s right! Teachers who satisfied their “Learn 1, Earn 2” credit by attending SNL: Schoolnet Learning during the summer months (face-to-face or virtual) earned the right to not come to school on January 4, 2016. Other staff members, not included in SNL or not attending SNL prior to August 13th, had several ways to earn a “flex day.” Staff members who have not earned their “flex day” or earned 7.5 hours of CPE prior to December 15th must report to campus on January 4, 2016. During the week of October 5th, all principals received an email from gisdlearning listing teachers who, according to our records, would need to supply you with documentation of 7.5 hours CPE in order to earn the flex day. If you need a copy of this list again, please contact Gale Tucker at [email protected]. She will forward a copy of your list. On the following page, you will see various scenarios of how teachers on your campus satisfy the requirements for earning a “flex day.”

Ways that teachers and paraprofessionals could earn their January 4th “flex-day.”

1. Professional staff members earned their flex day by attending “Learn 1, Earn 2” - - SNL: Schoolnet Learning during the summer months in face – to – face setting prior to August 13th or by completing the virtual learning session online.

2. Professional staff members who attended SNL: Schoolnet Learning during August in-service earn a “flex-day” by attending 7.5 hours of training either during the summer months and/or in after school training sessions this fall. Those training sessions must equal 7.5 hours or greater in total.

3. P.E. teachers, Fine Arts teachers, CTE teachers, and Librarians were not required to attend SNL: Schoolnet Learning. These departments have provided numerous after-school and other learning opportunities outside of contract time for teachers to earn 7.5 hours toward a “flex-day.”

4. Paraprofessionals who attended the Paraprofessional Conference – “You Matter, You Really Do” on Saturday, October 3rd earned 6 hours of comp time. They may choose to use those 6 hours toward the January 4th flex day.

5. Paraprofessionals with 7.5 hours or more in comp time may choose to use those hours for January 4th.

This year’s event takes place the week of December 7-13, Computer Science Education Week. Over the past two years, leaders like you who engage students in this global event have helped introduce over 100 million students worldwide to computer science and to coding, helping them to build skills for future jobs. Let’s put Garland ISD on the global Hour of Code map! Many of our campuses already registered for this amazing event. If you wish to participate, you still have time to sign up your school by going to https://hourofcode.com/us.

Every participating educator will receive a thank-you gift, and every school can enter to win $10,000 of hardware for introducing students to the Hour of Code.

One hour can be enough to inspire and encourage students to seek more learning to gain and increase their coding skills.

DATE: November 12, 2015 TO: Elementary Principals Assistant Principals FROM: Carra King, Director of Intervention RE: iTeam Reminders ____________________________________________________________________ I want to remind all elementary campus administrators about a critical component of our intervention/enrichment model. It is imperative that your iTeam have the opportunity to meet monthly with grade level teachers to analyze current student data, review and revise intervention groupings, discuss student performance, and determine any procedural or environmental changes needed during iTime. I also want to remind you that Fridays are set aside for iTeam members to document interventions, plan intervention lessons for each group, prepare for and participate in RTI, SST, and ARD meetings. Please do not ask iTeam members to cover classes on Fridays for campus events or when a substitute has not been secured. Also, please do not pull iTeam members from iTime intervention instruction to cover classes when no substitute is available. DATE: November 13, 2015 TO: Elementary Principals FROM: Nelson Orta, Director of Organizational Learning RE Teachers’ Opinions Count – 1st Notice Strategic Plan Goal 5 _______________________________________________________________________ Teachers’ voices need to be heard, and TEA is providing elementary teachers an opportunity to share their perspectives on literacy development in the elementary schools. We hope that this opinion survey will help guide state developers of training and resources to better meet the needs of the classroom teacher. Please share the below request with all classroom teachers.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk (MCPER) are conducting a survey to learn more about teachers’ perspectives on the literacy development of all learners and preferences for professional development. The information gathered will guide development of training modules and classroom resources designed to assist teachers in the transition from state assessments based on modified standards to the general state assessment, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®). More information on this initiative is available at Targeting the 2 Percent.

Educators who work with students in grades kindergarten–5 are invited to complete the short survey at www.survey.utexas.edu/tea. Your participation is greatly appreciated and encouraged. To ensure that we hear from as many stakeholders as possible, we also ask that you forward this message to other possible participants.
