On Friday House Leaders and staff organized activities for House Day. This was the first chance to welcome in new members to the different houses and for houses to have lots of fun while getting to know each other. In assembly this week we celebrated our 2019 academic results. We have achieved the best NCEA Level 1, NCEA Level 2, Maori, Male, Numeracy and Literacy results the school has ever had. Students who had received NCEA Level or Subject endorsements also received their academic badges. I have included National and Decile1-3 results for your perusal. Our roll numbers are up on last year with currently 507 students enrolled at Wairoa College.
2019 sees the best NCEA results in the last decade for Wairoa College
We are very pleased to announce the following provisional results for the 2019 Academic Year for Wairoa College. As we reflect over the last decade, Wairoa College has achieved its best results. We are also above
National and similar decile schools for NCEA Level 1 and 2. 2019 saw a strategic focus to target boys and Maori achievement. We are pleased to say that we are significantly above National results for both Male and Maori achievement at NCEA Level 1 and NCEA Level 2.
I would like to thank the staff and whanau who have worked together to support our young people in achieving these outstanding results. To the students I would like to say a big “well done”! We are on a journey and although there are areas that we would like to further improve it is important to stop and reflect on how far we have come in the last two years. Our school values are reflected in these results and the changing tone and culture of our school. Students are now talking about their learning, their goals, they are more proactive and aiming for their Personal Excellence. This year’s strategic focus will be to challenge our students to achieve at the Merit and Excellence levels.

NEW TIMETABLE
Throughout 2019 we asked for feedback from staff and students regarding the timetable. We have decided to not roll the days. Monday will always be Monday’s timetable etc. We hope this will help students know where they need to be and what resources they require for that day. Some of the changes outlined in brief:
• Our Whanau classes have been extended to allow us to support our students in terms of well-being, attendance, academic pathways, and (My Mahi)
• On Wednesday, school will start at 9am, this is to allow our staff the opportunity for professional development between 8:15- 9am. Students arriving at 8:45 will be supervised by staff. We will continue with our singing rotations which are important to grow our Tikanga and pride in our school.
• Our Deans now have a regular time where they can continue to support our school values and vision for Wairoa College.
• House meetings on Friday will allow us to grow the school culture and pride in our houses, this will allow us to plan activities like swimming sports and athletic sports.

This is an App that can be used on a phone or pc that allows students to plan and navigate careers, wellbeing and academic achievement. It allows students, parents and teachers the ability to sit alongside students and guide them. This program will be rolled out through whanau class time and can be run on a laptop or a phone. This is an exciting new initiative that will allow students to explore career options, track NCEA credits and set goals. The roll out of this program will be over Term 1 with full implementation in Term 2.

Our code of conduct is an overarching document that supports our vision and school values here at Wairoa College, it is what we can expect from our students as they enter our school grounds and our classrooms. The code of conduct is supported by class treaties and our PB4L and our discipline structure, it is a quick reference for staff and students. We have asked students to sign this in acknowledgement that they understand the intention of our code of conduct. In future this will be part of our enrolment pack.

HOUSE DAY
10Lucknow street | 06 838 8303 | www.wairoacollege.school.nz | email: [email protected]
Nga Taiaha were dressed in Gold for ‘House Day’ and like a line in our new chant says, “we were ready, ready” to have a fun filled, action packed day. Kotahitanga – working together, was our focus throughout the day as we participated in a “Selfie”orienteering activity where groups were given clues to find different items around the school. Once they had found the obscure item they would take a group selfie as proof. A group of students were in charge of designing a mascot for Nga Taiaha House and our Year 12 and 13 Leaders compiled and lead our new House Chant. A swim, watermelon, ice blocks and chocolate bars – gold crunchie bars of course, were much appreciated on such a hot day. Team Spirit was on a high and the students certainly maintained the School Core Value of Kotahitanga –Well done Nga Taiaha we are proud of YOU!Ngā Taiaha e Rua House Leader, Yvonne Nairn
The focus of the day for Manu was participation and encouraging others. This was displayed throughout the whole day where the students interacted with each other in many activities such as Dancing, Amazing Race, Swimming, Basketball and a fantastic Bbq. We are lucky enough to have a great bunch of senior students who supported the Teachers and Students wherever they could. The day was very successful and the stu-dents had lots of fun.Manu Korotangi House Leader, Laice Jackson
HOUSE DAYOur morning started with the students being divided into their year levels and being allocated a station involving an activity run by our Prefects and Year 13 students. The main objective for the activities was for students to bond and get to know each other, especially our new Year 7 students. There were a total of 6 stations or activities where each year level spent 15 minutes completing the activity. The activities were gumboot throw, blind folded walk, bag race, Frisbee throw, mat/board race and cross fire. All students participated very well with lots of fun and competitiveness showing amongst themselves. After Interval the time was spent in our Wharenui with a power point presentation by house leader, Mr Keil, where students learnt about the significance of our House and the college rules and expectations for 2020. All teachers and prefects attached to our House got to talk about themselves to the students so that they understood who we are and our backgrounds. After lunch half of the students went down to the Community Centre for a deserving swim while the remainder of our House stayed back to prepare things for the Athletics sports day coming up. Overall it was a fun day for everyone and we look forward to another outstanding year where Patu Pounamu House is sure to dominate in every inter house competition for 2020.Patu Pounamu House Leader, Reg Keil

Friday 31 January was the first occasion for Te Toki house to come together and participate in a fun-filled day of activities. This was a great opportunity to welcome our new students as well as build house spirit ahead of the upcoming inter-house competitions later this term. In a word, the day was “HOT!” That being said, the overall attitude from all students was incredible and it was a pleasure to see everyone getting involved de-spite the scorching conditions. The activities for the day were designed to allow students to demonstrate the school values of Kotahitanga, Manaakitanga, Resilience, and Respect. These included tasks such as: egg-and-spoon races, sack races, basketball challenges, learning a new house chant, and building human pyramids. We ended the day with a slip ‘n’ slide competition which was much-needed under the ferocious summer sun. It was awesome to see Te Toki students participating in activities outside of the classroom with smiles on their faces and having some good, old-fashioned fun.Te Toki a Tāpiri House Leader, Tim Gledhill
