Waitākiri School Newsletter Term 3, Week 6 - Wednesday 27 August 2014 Kia ora families New logo and uniform This Friday we will be sending home and posting online our new school logo and uniform! This marks an important milestone in the evolution of the merged school as we create a logo that honours the past of the two schools and is a symbol for the future. The competition was fierce between the two logos proposed which indicates that both met the requirements of a logo that would represent the coming together of two schools, the notion of meandering waters (the meaning of Waitākiri), and a symbol that will stand the test of time going forward. The total vote for the two logos was 1175 with the preferred logo coming out on top by just 25 votes! The feedback on the uniform was very helpful, allowing the committee to make some changes (especially in relation to the amount of black in the uniform). I think you will really like the final result! So keep an eye out for the flyer this Friday (check your child's bag) and look online. Enclosed with the brochure is a fridge magnet that will help you to reinforce the school values of REAL CHOICES at home. Of the values REAL (Respect, Excellence, Adventure and Lifelong learning) are the most relevant to children and staff on a daily basis. If you reinforce respect for self, others and the environment at home, we will be on the same page as we partner with you to achieve the best learning and well-being outcome for your child. On the flip side of the magnet is the way that we respond to inappropriate behaviour at school, "Mucked up, Own up, Put it right, Move on!" This process allows our children to have a consistent response from staff when they make poor decisions or 'muck up'. It is consistent with the understanding that it is the behaviour we want to change (and we want the child to change) so rather than labelling the child we are specific about how they have mucked up and then guide them through the steps so that they can move on. Feel free to use the same language at home if it helps your child to take responsibility for his/ her behaviour. Report and Three Way learning Conference feedback Thanks to all of you who set aside the 15 minutes to support your child in his/ her learning at school. I am aware that a small number of families feel that the 3 Way Learning Conference is a waste of time. I want to re-iterate that the time that you take to come along and partner with the teacher does make a difference. There is a strength and power in school and home meeting together in support of your child's learning, it does send a clear message to your child about how you view education, your child's place in decision making and your view of the school. Together we do make a significant difference for your child. Here are the results from the survey: Does the report give you the information you need about your child's progress and achievement? Yes 83% To some degree 16% No 1%

New School design: The BOT are expecting updated information to come from the Ministry of Education in the next few weeks regarding our school plan and design. We will send you the information once it is finalised and we have details of when the whole project will commence and the timeline for the build. As I have spent time in classes and around the playground over the last two weeks I have been encouraged by the attitude of the children toward learning and their incredible sense of joy and fun. We really do have a fantastic school! Thanks for your ongoing support and the many messages of appreciation we receive about the great job are staff are doing. Neill O’Reilly Principal – Tumuaki

This is not only dangerous for your children getting in and out of cars, but others when the traffic becomes congested. The cul-de-sac is a turn-around area only. Thank you.

Recreation and Sport Centre Newsletter Hi everyone, I’m delighted to let you know that the community advisory group formed to recommend the site for a new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre in north east Christchurch has now finalised its recommendations for a preferred site for the facility. We’ve had some very productive meetings since we formed in June and we’re satisfied we’ve followed a robust process to make an informed decision. On Thursday 14 August, we agreed to recommend a proposed site at QEII as our preferred site for the new recreation and sport centre. Sites identified, investigated and ranked in order of preference included Rawhiti Park (second), New Brighton (third equal), Burwood Park (third equal), Cuthberts Green (fifth equal), Clare Park (fifth equal), Aranui Campus (fifth equal) and Prestons Development (eighth) The next step is for the advisory group to report to the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board on 1 September with its suggested recommendation and then the Board will report to the Council on 11 September. The Council has final sign-off on the preferred site. As you aware from our previous newsletter, we agreed potential sites would be assessed against a range of 10 criteria. QEII has been chosen as our preferred site for the new recreation and sport centre for a number of reasons, including its accessibility, impact on social wellbeing and the size of the site, which will allow the facility to grow over time if necessary. The advisory group includes representatives from eight community and sport organisations – Youth Alive Trust, Rawhiti Community Sports Inc, Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society (ACTIS), Tumara Park Residents’ Association, Avondale Residents’ Association, Coastal Spirit Football Club, Keep QEII in the East and Eastern Vision. In June 2012, the Council agreed an Eastern facility should be built on the QEII site, or an agreed alternative location, to replace the damaged QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. A budget of $30.5 million has been allocated to the Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre in the 2012/13 Annual Plan and subsequently brought into the Christchurch City Three Year Plan (TYP). The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has also given $6.5million for water attractions at the facility.
