Our benefits range from medical, dental and vision coverage to life insurance options. In addition, we offer an on-site employee health center for covered employees and spouses to use. We also offer a variety of retirement savings plans to meet your needs.

Medical Insurance

Wake County offers three medical plan options that are administered by Cigna. The Standard and Premium Plans are traditional copay plans and the Consumer Driven Plan is a deductible/coinsurance plan with no copays. The plans have varying coverage levels for services. The County contributes more than $400.00 toward the monthly cost of coverage for regular full-time employees and a small portion of dependent coverage.

Dental Insurance Wake County offers two dental plans throughDeltaDental: Basic and Plus. Both options cover diagnostic, preventive and basic services, but the Plus Plan covers major services at a higher percentage. Under each option, participants can visit any dental provider. The County contributes approximately 65% of the dental premiums.

Vision Care

Prescription Drug Plan

Wake County offers two vision plans: the Standard Plan, with lower premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs; or the Premium Plan, with higher premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs. Vision insurance is voluntary and 100% paid by employees. The plans are administered by EyeMed.

Wake County offers a prescription drug plan that helps reduce prescription costs, administered by CVS Caremark. Employees enrolled in the Medical Plan are enrolled in the prescription plan at no additional cost.

Wake County provides 1x the employee’s annual salary, capped at $200,000 in Life and AD&D insurance through The Standard Insurance Company. Employees can purchase supplemental coverage. Supplemental Life Insurance is available to spouses and dependent children. Supplemental AD&D is also available to spouses.

Wake County offers short term disability benefits through The Standard Insurance Company. Employees may choose a weekly benefit in multiples of $50, from $100 per week to $600 per week. The weekly benefit may be up to 66 2/3% of the employee’s annual salary. Employees may also choose either a 15-day or 30-day elimination period. This coverage is 100% paidby employees.

Wake County provides long term disability to eligible employees between their second to fifth years of employment through The Standard Insurance Company. The plan pays up to 60% of an employee’s monthly salary, capped at $1,500 per month.

Wake County offers long term care insurance through UNUM that employees may purchase for themselves and other eligible family members. Employees may apply for benefit amounts of $2,000 or $3,000 per month and may select a 3 year, 6 year or unlimited duration period for facility benefits. Coverage also includes home health care.

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance is a voluntary, employee-paid Aflac plan that provides a lump-sum benefit to help with out-of-pocket medical and non-medical expenses that accompany covered critical illnesses. Employees and spouses are eligible for coverage and child(ren) are automatically eligible for 50% of the payable benefit. Rates are locked in at enrollment and each person insured is eligible for a $100 wellness credit per year.

With this type of insurance, benefits are payable for injuries and services related to an off the job accident. This is a voluntary, employee-paid Aflac plan for employees and dependents. When enrolled in this plan, each person insured is eligible for a $50 wellness credit per year.

Hospital Indemnity provides cash benefits to help pay for certain medical and non-medical costs associated with a covered hospital stay due to a sickness or accidental injury. This is a voluntary, employee-paid Aflac plan that is eligible to both employees and their families. When enrolled in this plan, each person insured is eligible for a $50 wellness credit per year.

Aflac counselors are available to meet one-on-one with employees to explain how Aflac’s voluntary benefits can help supplement the core benefits offered by the County through financial payments.

Wellness

Employee Health Center (EHC)

Wake County provides the Living Great @ Wake Program to help employees and their families be physically, socially, emotionally, and financially healthy. The program includes a diabetes management program, fitness classes, various health challenges and information on a variety of topics ranging from how to quit smoking to how to incorporate better eating habits into daily life.

Wake County offers two on-site Employee Health Centers, managed by Premise Health. Staff are licensed to diagnose, treat and prescribe for a wide variety of common illnesses and injuries. Employees also have access to a full range of health assessment, coaching and disease management services. The goal of the centers is to help employees achieve optimum health.

Services are available and free to employees and spouses covered by the Standard or Premium Medical plans. Employees and spouses enrolled on the Consumer Driven Plan can use the EHC for free for preventive screenings, wellness coaching and condition management; sick and acute care services are subject to a $20.00 fee. Appointments at the EHC do not require an employee to take leave.

Wake County offers myS.E.L.F.network, which provides social, emotional, legal and financial resources to employees and immediate household members. The program is offered through McLaughlin Young Group and includes the employee assistance program (EAP), access to experts, work and life resources and online services. The program is employer paid, confidential and available 24/7.

Local Government Employees’ Retirement System (LGERS)

Regular full-time and part-time employees (including law enforcement officers) are covered under the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System (LGERS). Participation is required for all regular employees. Employees contribute 6% on a pre-tax basis. Wake County contributes 7.5% for employees and 8.25% for law enforcement officers (LEOs).

Wake County currently contributes 5% on a pre-tax basis to the 401(k) plan for all benefit-eligible employees. The plan is administered through Prudential Retirement and offers both a pre-tax and a Roth 401(k) after-tax option.

Wake County offers a 457 Retirement Savings Plan that is administered through ICMA-RC and offers employees a pre-tax contribution option. IRAs for employees and their spouses are also available.

Wake County offers a pre-retirement workshop three times per year with representatives from the Retirement System, Prudential, Social Security Administration and more. Wake also provides retirement counseling for employees through Prudential.

Sick Leave Wake County grants 12 days of sick leave* per year for probationary or regular full-time employees to use in cases of personal illness, disability or related examination or treatment of an employee or immediate family.

Sick Leave Transfers

Wake County will accept unused sick leave balances from other NC LGERS or TSERS employers. Leave must be transferred within the first 6 months of employment and employment must have terminated with the prior employer within the previous 12 months.

Bereavement Leave

Wake County grants 40 hours* of bereavement leave per year to use for the loss of a family member, as defined by the policy.

Holidays Wake County grants 12 paid holidays* per year for benefit eligible employees.

*Full time is defined as working 40 hours per week (2080 hours/year). Employees with adifferent set of annual scheduled hours receive a different amount of leave.

Shared Leave Wake County employees may be eligible to donate annual leave or sick leave to another Wake County employee who has been approved to receive donated leave.

Eligible employees may receive up to 6 weeks of paid parental leave for the birth, adoption, legal placement, or foster care of a child.

Wake County grants up to 16 hours* per year for community involvement, as defined by the policy.

Most County offices are open for business from the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Flex-time, compressed work schedule and teleworking options may be utilized by employees with the advance approval of the department head.

Regular employees can apply to receive up to $1,200 annually to cover tuition and books related to accredited college courses. Tuition reimbursement is available after one year of employment with the advance approval of the department head and may be provided if there are available funds.

Wake County employees may participate in the IRS- established Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for health and dependent care-related expenses. FSAs allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health and dependent care expenses.

A health savings account (HSA) is an individually-owned bank account that allows employees to pay for eligible medical, dental and vision expenses with pre-tax dollars. The individual owns the account, and there are no “use it or lose it” restrictions like with an FSA. Contributions can be made to an HSA by employees enrolled in the CDP Medical Plan.

Wake County employees can enroll in the NC 529 College Foundation Savings Plan to start saving for college expenses. Payroll deductions for the college savings plan are an after-tax benefit.

Financial planning and educational sessions are available for employees provided by Prudential Retirement 401(k) and ICMA 457 Plans. Free financial planning is also offered by the Local Government Federal Credit Union for Wake County employees who bank with them. All employees have to do is open a checking account for $25.00 to become a member.
