Your investment in our work will support programs such as the annual Teacher Leadership Grant program. I'm pleased to report that we will approach $1 million this year in total grants given to Wake County public school teachers since the inception of this program. Speaking of funding, I'm asked from time to time how much of each dollar given to the Partnership goes to delivering programming in support of public education. For every dollar given, 75% goes to programming, 15% goes to fundraising support and 10% goes to administrative expenses. Watchdog groups provide various guidelines for nonprofit management and fundraising activity. For example, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance recommends that nonprofits spend at least 65% on program activity, while the American Institute of Philanthropy sets its minimum standard at 60% of expenses. As most of you know, In Context is the Partnership's bi-weekly e-publication which highlights current education news relevant to Wake County. Topics primarily cover local education issues but also include the state and national level. In Context also provides coverage of the Wake County Board of Education. Lastly, the Partnership had the great pleasure onMay 7 to connect the anti-bullying program ("Be aSTAR") presented by the WWE and The CreativeCoalition with Hodge Road Elementary School inKnightdale. One out of every four children in theworld is bullied, and a child is bullied every sevenminutes. Through this campaign, children aroundthe globe are encouraged to "Be a STAR: Show.Tolerance. And. On Tuesday, May 7, WWE Superstars Alberto DelRio and Ricardo Rodriguez spoke to hundreds ofstudents and faculty at Hodge Road Year-RoundElementary School about eliminating bullying aspart of the "Be a STAR" anti-bullying alliance, co-founded by WWE and The Creative Coalition. ThePartnership was proud to connect WWE to HodgeRoad Elementary School for this importantmessage. More than 400 students in second through fifthgrades heard the anti-bullying message brought byDel Rio and Rodriquez. Partnership Connections

Wake Education Partnership is pleased towork with local businesses, the school system anda wide variety of groups in different ways thatfocus on the education of children and theirfamilies. Below are some recent highlights andthanks.

The Partnership was pleased to help bringPNC's Mobile Learning Adventure to aliteracy screening event May 4 at HilburnAcademy in Raleigh. About 350 familiesshowed up to have their children screenedfor pre-k services. After the screening, theywere provided books, bookmarks and giventhe chance to play at stations set up byMarbles Kids Museum and PNC's MobileLearning Adventure. The visit by the MobileLearning Adventure is part of PNC's Grow UpGreat! early childhood initiative. The effortby the Partnership is part of its work tocreate a larger collaborative of existingprograms focused on early childhood literacyneeds.The Partnership completed its finalExcellence In Action classroom visit of thecurrent school year with a trip this week toJeffreys Grove Elementary in Raleigh. Wewould like to thank all of the students,teachers, principals, elected officials, school

the organization's board of directors aswell as individual volunteer opportunities inthe schools. In fact, that partnershipdates back to at least 1995 - a time whenmany of our current high school seniorswere just newborns. The close connection with Wake EducationPartnership is just one example of ourcommitment to education and employmentinitiatives. Over the past two years, theBank of America Charitable Foundation hascontributed more than $250,000 tonumerous organizations across theTriangle in support of their education andworkforce development programming. Another example of our commitment tohelp make financial lives better, throughthe power of every connection is throughhttp://www.bettermoneyhabits.com. Thisinnovative national partnership with theKhan Academy provides the public withtraining that is self-paced, fact-based andconversational. Just imagine financiallearning that's enjoyable and whichprovides tools to help you and your familyachieve its goals! leaders and business leaders whoparticipated in the inaugural year ofExcellence In Action. You can find adescription of the program and summariesfrom all four classroom visits at ourExcellence In Action site.Wake Education Partnership and PresidentSteve Parrott were recently featured as partof a panel discussion about K-12 educationon the Carolina Business Review televisionprogram. Steve was joined by FurmanPresident Rod Smolla and Hal Johnson fromthe Upstate Alliance. For more than 18years, CBR has provided in-depth analysis ofthe week's business highlights throughconversations with CEOs and business,political and academic leaders from Northand South Carolina. The video can be seenhere. The Partnership's College Advisory Councilwas held March 27 hosted by the CampbellUniversity Law School in Raleigh. Presidents from colleges/universities in WakeCounty attended along with the Provost fromNC State University. Wake County PublicSchools Board Chair Keith Sutton, InterimSuperintendent Stephen Gainey and DeputySuperintendent School Performance CathyMoore also serve on the Council along withleaders from Wake Education Partnership andWake Economic Development. The focusof the meeting was to look for opportunitiesto collaborate in the areas of teacherpreparation, professional development forcurrent teachers and administrators,improving the pipeline of Wake Countystudents applying to attend colleges anduniversities in Wake County, early collegecredit programs and connecting resourceswith the Wake business and non-profitcommunities.Thanks to the agents at the Preston andStonehenge offices of Fonville Morisey fortheir participation in recent discussionsabout current assignment and funding issuesaffecting Wake County's schools and localbusinesses. We appreciated your interestand welcome your input about our schools.

Working with and representing the businesscommunity in a wide range of activities is a largepart of who we are and what we do. It gives us anopportunity to learn more about the needs of thedistrict and to make sure the perspectives of localbusinesses are well represented in discussions atall levels. The Wake County school board recently approved a list of construction and renovation projects that will be putbefore voters Oct. 8. There are still a few steps in the process, but the basics of the building program are set.The full presentations to county commissioners and school board members can be found here.
