WAKE FOREST ALUMNI NEWS

WAKE FOREST ACTIVITIES The literary societies have begun what promises

to be a very successful year. Five of last year's intercollegiate debaters are back, and" there seems to be no lack of good men to fill the ·places of those who graduated last spring. Alumni IWho are especially interested in the society work will be glad to learn that the college now oft'ers two courses that are especially designed for the benefit .of society workers. One is a course in pu1blic speaking, the other a course in argumentation. These courses are given by Prof. A. L. Aycock who comes to us for the first time tl).is year as a member of English Department. In addition to giving these courses he supervises all literary .activities of both Societies. The last Society Day, November 17, was in every way up to the usual standard, with a hotly contested debate in the morning, four well prepared orations in the evening, and an enjoyable reception following the orations.

The 1928 football season is drawing swiftly to a close. For Wake Forest it has not been an immediate succes~. but 'Deacon supporters are giving Coaches Cofall, Miller and Emmerson their utmost support, and are looking already to another year. The team has shown a decided improvement in its succeeding games this year, and Wake Forest alumni may well hope for a more succeesful year in 1929. A prominent North Carolina sports editor, in a recent issue _ of his paper, called attention to the loyal and unswerving support the Wake Forest alumni have given the coaches and' players this year in spite of reverses, and commented favorably on the fact that Wake Forest men are willing and able to wait for

· a new system to become ingrained into a green squad.

The Glee Club has been organized thoroughly and is now operating under its own ·constitution. The personnel of the Club _numbers thirty-five. Thirty men are in the chorus, and twelve are in the orchestra which is a part of the Glee Clutb. The business manager is- now arranging the .fall itinerary, which will be immediately after Thanksgiving. Eastern towns •will be visited in the fall and western towns in the spring. The program includes some of the best numbers arranged for male voices, both from classic and modern composers, while the orcbestra plays some fine compositions as well as popular numbers. A male quartet is a part of the Club. . The tal"ent on the Club has never been excelled here and a very succe1;1;ful season is anticipated: Many requests tor engagements have already been Teceived. The Club is under the direction ot Prof. K. T. Rayner of the Mathem.aUcs Department of the College, who took the Club through a most successful season last spring; J. L. Carlton is president of the Clu•b, J. P. Phifer is business manager. . .. ·•· ·

to banquets, receptions, and' commencement exercises. At one of t~se, the Davidson-Wake Forest football ,game, over eight thousand people were pr-esent, and this was a smaller number than at some of the other events. It would 'be quite a true statement to say that more people, in toto, heard and saw the band than any other organization of any kind.. upon the campus. The audiences ·were to he reckoned in thousands of people more often than not. The present -season will out-strip the last, for the band has not on:y played for every football game played by Wake Forest in the state, but has played for several other college events as well. In addition, the band has already broadcasted over Station WPTF once this year, having broadcasted twice last year over the same station. We are glad to count Wake Forest among those of the .. Big Five" having a full ban<l.

The college is indebted to Mr. Ben T. Ward of Greensboro for his successfur eft'orts in raising funds to pay for the instruments and to Prof Nevill IsbeU Who has given generously of his time and talent in directing the Band.

The pastor of the Wake Forest Baptist Church, Allen .J. Easley, has proved a delight to the many friends that he has made during the short time he has been here. He comes to Wake Forest from a successful pastorate in Glasgow, KentuckY. Originally from South Carolina, educated at Furman University, Harvard University, and our Seminary at

. Louisville, he is an asset to the cultural life of the community. His wife graduated from Westhampton College, of Richmond, Virginia, is a daughter of A. T. Every man of the group brought great messages but especial mention will have to be made of the ma'rvelous ministry of Dr. Vann who wa"B with us at four diiferent times. Never, say the "Oldest inha·bitants," have they listened to sermons of suqh beauty and' power.
