Details of a major ‘Let’s Work Together’ Business Event focusing on tackling youth unemployment were announced last month.

The ‘Let’s Work Together’ event took place at the Navigation Warehouse, Wakefield Waterfront, on March 26th, and focused on how employers can help young people gain access to work experience, training opportunities and jobs.

Pontefract and Castleford MP and Work and Pensions Secretary, Yvette Cooper (left) said: “We all need to do everything we can to support young people who have been affected by the global recession so we never again have a lost generation. “Extra investment from the government has helped but local employers can play a part by taking on an intern, an apprentice or offering work experience. “Lots of local businesses are already giving young people a start and we have 700 youth jobs through the Future Jobs Fund but we must do more. It’s important everybody works together to boost the local economy and give young people a chance.”

Councillor Peter Box (right), Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “The local economy has started to recover and, together with our partners, Wakefield Council is actively working towards creating prosperity for all in the District. We must make a special effort to ensure our young people are not excluded from future opportunities. Wakefield Council has made it a key priority to help young people back into work.

Since November 2009 we have created 146 jobs for local people through the Future Jobs Fund, many of which have been targeted at 18-24 year olds. I hope that this event will help get more of our young people into work.”

By George.......Isn’t it time the English Raised the Flag?

Eye on St Georges Day 05

Slowly a ground swell of patriotism is returning after years of paying no heed to our avenging paragon while tolerating our Celtic neighbours’ over-enthusiasm for nailing up griffins, wearing tartan and the lauding of Guiness and little green men.

”It is time that St George was reclaimed from the dragon, from past associations with racism and the far Right,” says Simon Barrow, he claims the original St George was originally celebrated for defending the marginalised and challenging the persecution policy of the then Emperor, Constantine. He suggests George should become the “people’s saint’’. Certainly it is “the people’’ who kicked off this renewed interest in St George.

By tradition, April 23rd is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower. However, unlike other countries, England does not celebrate it like Americans celebrate 4 July with fireworks. In fact, you are more likely to see big St Patrick parades in England celebrating Ireland’s National Day, more than you would see any sign of St Georges Day being celebrated. This was certainly true in Manchester in 2007, when St George’s Day was virtually ignored soon after the biggest St Patrick’s Day Celebrations in the city’s history.

Interesting Facts

Despite the fact that St. George has been the patron saint of England since the 14th century, only one in five people know that St. George’s Day falls on April 23rd.

More than a quarter of people living in England do not even know who their patron saint is!

Shakespeare was born on April 23rd, 1564 and he died on the same day in 1616.

St George slaying the dragon - but lets be honest - this probably never happened.English Roses

Freedom Studios, based in Bradford, has been awarded a Grants for the Arts from Arts Council England, Yorkshire to run the third of its successful playwriting courses – Street Voices 3.

Freedom Studios is looking for individuals with writing talent and stories to tell about contemporary Britain and is committed to commissioning a writer through Street Voices to write a national seventy-minute touring play for the company. The company is dedicated to investing in another generation of writers to ensure that their work is presented to a broad audience.

Street Voices 3 is a call-out to emerging playwrights in Yorkshire, particularly from first and second generation born Black, Asian and minority ethnic emerging writers aged 17 plus, at the beginning of their careers, - slam poets, novelists, comic book writers, - anyone who would value a supported and creative approach to writing for stage. Street Voices 3 is a writers project supporting emerging writers in the realisation of original twenty-minute short plays. These short plays will culminate in public performances to live paying audiences and invited theatre writers, performers, directors and producers in October 2010.

Workshops will be led by Freedom Studios Artistic Director, Madani Younis, with guest lecturers to include Josie Rourke, Artistic Director, The Bush Theatre, London and Jatinder Verma, Artistic Director Tara Arts. Freedom Studios Artistic Director Madani Younis on Street Voices: “The United Kingdom has changed dramatically over the last sixty years and continues to change rapidly as the world opens up and borders are torn down. Yet there are hidden voices out there who still remain largely elusive within the arts and we want to hear from them.”

Workshops will take place at week-ends and will be hosted at Freedom Studios, Bradford, The Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddesfield, and Theatre in the Mill, Bradford.

Mark Hollander, Theatre Officer, Arts Council England, Yorkshire says: ‘Arts Council England is pleased to support Freedom Studios to establish Street Voices 3. This is a project that inspires and develops the work of emerging writers and artists offering clear and tangible development opportunities. The project builds on a programme of work that is making a positive impact on the range of new voices working within the performing arts.’

Writers are invited to request an application from [email protected] stating their full name and e-mail address.

Castleford Tigers fan C/Sjt (Colour serjeant ) Mark Isherwood has fitted a sign on his JACKAL (Vehicle) to show his support whilst on the front line in Afghanistan

Mark, from Castleford sent the photograph (above) whilst on patrol in FOB NOLAY, where he is serving in the 3 Rifles battle group as Commander of a fire support group (FSG) Platoon.

Communicating by a text link machine specifically designed for soldiers to keep in touch with family at home, Mark writes: “I have been out here for over four months. I’m a barmy Castleford Tigers fan, and wanted to show my support to the club during the season.”“I will hopefully return home in late April in time to cheer the Tigers on at the Murrayfield Magic Weekend.”

Whilst enduring searing heat and hostile conditions over 3,000 miles away from home, Mark was particularly proud to hear that the Tigers have raised over £2,000 for Help for Heroes already, since announcing that £4 for every Tigers Adult 2010 Away Shirt sold via the club will be donated to the charity.

“Castleford Tigers are respecting and supporting the Armed Forces, and the work we all do out here. The shirt has grown on me and the Help the Heroes logo on the bottom completes the shirt.”

“I am particularly impressed with the reaction from the fans and local people of Castleford by how much they have focused, rallied around and supported the families of the three local young lads that have sadly been killed in action out here in Afghanistan.”

“Rugby league and Soldiering is very much the same in a lot of ways. Teamwork, skill, discipline, men sticking together and pushing on through hard times, regardless of the tiredness in the body.

“Well done Castleford, it shows there are people back home that do care.”

Help for Heroes have raised over £40 million to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country.

The 007 Aston Martin Racing LMP1 car finished on the podium of the Spa 1000 kilometres in Belgium last month following a magnificent fightback after the team started from the back of the grid.

The crew failed to set a qualifying time on Saturday as the result of a mechanical problem, which saw the Aston Martin Racing mechanics work late into the night to replace the car’s engine in readiness for the

six-hour race. Nonetheless a superlative performance from all three drivers throughout an incident-packed race, has resulted in Aston Martin Racing adding to its Le Mans Series team points total following victory at the opening round in Barcelona last month. Stefan Mücke started the race at 12:50 in the 007 car from the back of the grid, and soon demonstrated an impressive pace coupled with the incisive ability to cut through traffic. Within an hour he had already moved into the top five behind the 009 car.

The next competitive outing for the Aston Martin Racing team will be its biggest challenge of the year: the daunting Le Mans 24 Hours itself, on June 13-14. Aston Martin Racing Team Principal George Howard-Chappell concluded: “I’m extremely pleased to get both cars home in one piece this close to Le Mans. It was an excellent result for the 007 crew.”

Another scientific breakthrough! Scientists (yes, them again) have deduced that as the nation’s health improves as a whole, women’s taste in men is softening, which could well explain the rise of the Pretty Boy...

Their theory is that when health is poor, women will go for rugged, tough looking men, which sub-consciously they believe will result in stronger offspring. In relation to this, when a nation’s health improves, and life expectancy rises, women will become attracted to more feminine-looking men, with gentler natures to match their boyish (and in some cases, girlish) faces.

Research carried out on more than 5,000 women showed that Zac Efron recently beat Sean Connery in the attractive stakes by a mile, but does this really prove that the modern woman prefers a cutesy-looking boy to a ‘real’ man? The age of the women who took part is not known, but my feeling is that these findings are simply the results of generational preference.

For example, take Zac Efron (please, someone take him). Here is a man who is waxed within an inch of his life, his straightened hair strategically designed to fall over one eye, enhancing his dyed black lashes and baby blue contact lenses. He spends his days self-tanning, doing sit-ups and singing in High School Musical (suddenly, the demise of his engagement to Vanessa Hudgens is no longer such a mystery…) Mr Efron is possibly THE most groomed and polished ‘actor’ ever to grace our screens, but I challenge you to find any woman over the age of 21 who finds him attractive. Zac is one of the new breed of male, who along with Orlando Bloom, Tobey MacGuire and Robert Pattinson (R-Pattz to those down with the kidz) are infiltrating the Hollywood screen of old, where once, men were all square jaws, glinting eyes and imposing physiques – for one of highlighted moptops, ‘guyliner’ and tinted lip balm.

In spite of these ‘scientific findings’ I conducted some research of my own and while R-Pattz’s name did keep cropping up among the younger circles (they are only human after all…) it became apparent that the majority of ladies asked, still prefer a ‘manly’ man. Colin Farrell, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp were the re-ocurring favourites and all women asked were fit, healthy and not craving babies!

The general consensus is, no grown woman wants to spend her days fighting her bloke for the bathroom mirror or her Clinique - and even though Sean Connery now spends more time dodging coffins than bullets, you ask any woman who was around in his James Bond hey-day and you can bet they still wouldn’t kick him out of bed (and they’d be safe in the knowledge that he wouldn’t steal their mascara in the morning).

LS Theatre Productions are pleased to announce Carly Stenson will be joining the cast of A Tribute To Bob Fosse.

Carly plays Steph Dean from Channel 4 Drama Hollyoaks. Carly is a sensational vocalist and dancer with a real passion for Musical Theatre. To have her onboard is a real bonus for LS Theatre Productions and will help them take the next step in the right direction.

LS Productions is a South Yorkshire based theatre company comprising of working professionals who are currently carving out careers within the industry, who perform along side a host of talented local performers, producing high quality show stopping theatrical productions. The company was founded by Barnsley actor Sebastian Shaw in 2008 and has since raised over five thousand pounds for both local and national charities, acclaiming itself a name for the unique and diverse quality of its performances.

Sebastian told the Eye: “I believe we are Barnsleys leading self funded theatre company that is ran by volunteers and the only theatre group around that produces charity shows of this nature and size. Our next production is A Tribute To Bob Fosse. The show celebrates the life and works of legendary choreographer Bob Fosse from his early years as a dancer to his awarding winning Broadway choreography. Featuring sections from Chicago, Liza With A “Z” Damm Yankees, Pyjama Game, Sweet Charity and Cabaret

The show will be supporting the national charity Help For Heroes www.helpforheroes.org.uk. I find it crazy that we only started two years ago as a one off charity show for Cancer Research Uk and now five shows later with a twenty strong core group of local and national performers and a huge following we continue to go from strength to strength”.

Cooking up ideas for fund raising can be difficult – but chef Andy Gabbitas and his wife Toni knew exactly where to start. As proprietors of The Wortley Arms, the couple decided to utilise their culinary expertise and create a cook book, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

In a society where celebrity-endorsed books are flying off the shelves, a publication featuring over 30 mouth-watering recipes (often found on the menu in The Wortley Arms and using ingredients sourced locally) offers the reader a refreshing change from the norm and the opportunity to support their community and a worthwhile charity.

Andy is a Masterchef of Great Britain who, prior to moving to the village of Wortley on the outskirts of Sheffield, spent seven years travelling the world and serving up fine cuisine to high-profile figures such as Margaret Thatcher, John Major and designers Dolce & Gabbana. After cancer touched his family, he and Toni mobilised and decided to do everything they could to raise money for Marie Curie. In April 2010 the pair will be running the London Marathon, and after months of training and getting sponsorship, they are ready to take on the challenge.

The concept for The Wortley Arms Cook Book was hatched in slightly more relaxing circumstances. While chatting over a pint with friends, Andy was encouraged to put his skills and knowledge to good use. After securing support from broadcaster and comedian Toby Foster and a local publishing company, the 48-page book went into production – kindly financed by Andy’s suppliers and friends with everyone working on it generously giving their time freely.

The team has finally reached boiling point with the book ready for release on 26 February 2010 and aiming to raise £15,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care – it will be available from The Wortley Arms, Mitchells Wines in Meadowhead and every branch of Crawshaws Butchers; the minimum donation is £5.

Now everybody has the opportunity to take the magic from the menu at The Wortley Arms into their own kitchen – Andy has even revealed the recipe to the famous Wortley Venison Pie! (Below)

I love saying that ‘I’m an author’ with a smile on my face. Because it’s what I wanted to be more than anything – except an Oscar winning actress – and I enjoy it so much that my work feels more like a hobby. In the past I was the Queen of Rubbish Jobs, and I know there is nothing worse than having to trudge out on a cold morning to do a job you hate. Trust me – I was a trainee accountant once, the worst job mis-match in history for someone like me who hates numbers. I used to count down in quarter-hour increments how long I had to go until home time. The word ‘Bored’ just didn’t cut it. I thought the job title would make my mum and dad proud, which is why I stuck it for so long – I just ended up making myself ultra-miserable. If I never see a table of statistics again, it won’t be long enough.

I’m already doing that ‘mum’ thing and hoping that my boys find something in life they are happy to do – and get a decent wage for (the mad thing was that my trainee accountancy post paid a pittance – so not only was I unhappy, but poor as well!). Once upon a time, my younger son George couldn’t decide whether ‘to be a Premiership footballer, or open up a fruit and veg shop.’ The big one, Tez, has wanted to be everything from a soldier to a genie. Funnily enough, I thought Tez would be the arty one and George would go into something that involved lots of technology and computers. That seems to have turned on its head though and Tez has developed a Maths head, and George has turned into a John Gielgud in the making.

I’m not going to dissuade my son from his passion for drama. I was there myself at that age, desperate to become the new Bonnie Langford and waiting for the world to discover my genius

at the performance arts. But there were no drama clubs that I knew of, and mum and dad wouldn’t move down to London so I could join a theatre school (though I begged) so I know how George feels being ‘bitten by the bug’.

But he’s luckier than I ever was, because he’s found a club that I would have given my eye teeth to have been part of at his age – Tykes 2000, run by Gaynor Watts – a midweek event at the Metrodome. George has been on a TV a few times now as an extra, mixing with the likes of Billie Piper and Sue Johnston (no relation - alas). He puts me totally to shame, because I wimped out when I realised just how much hard work jobbing actors do and didn’t pursue my own ambitions in this field. And there he is, getting up at the crack of dawn sometimes to spend the day filming in Liverpool, dragging his suitcase of clothes behind him, planning which Xbox game to spend his earnings on. He’s a relative newbie – his fellow Tykes have appeared on programmes like A Touch of Frost, Cold Blood, Red Riding. He takes the early mornings and late nights in his stride. The pay off is watching the finished product on screen and I feel the thrill as much as he does.

It’s funny seeing your lad on the TV and I really hope that passion stays with him, because knowing what you want to be is half the battle – so many people never find their employment ‘niche’. My son already swans into the TV studios like a pro with his sandwiches and phone, so he can let me know what time he’ll be home. I’m so jealous, I’m turning green as I’m typing this.

But whatever job my sons do, I hope they do it because they love it and not to try and make me proud – because I will be anyway. Actor, computer wizard, rugby player, genie – so long as they don’t have the miserable adventures I had en route to my own perfect job. One thing is for sure - I shall be questioning them a LOT if either decides to go into accountancy!

12Charli Marwood is a lovely bright funny and confident young lady – but it has not always been this way as recently as last September she was an unhappy overweight depressed and virtual recluse –

I have been overweight pretty much since being a child and was always big for my age – but those who loved me just kept saying it was puppy fat and I would grow out of it”

What is so sad is that at her lowest ebb in the final year at school Charli felt so different from all the other girls in her class due to her size that she would go home at lunchtime rather then enter the canteen and eat in front of her classmates and after school when all other girls her age were out shopping, chatting and just being teenagers Charli was locked in her own world upstairs in her room dreaming and wishing for a different life. “ I spent hours researching the internet looking for magic weight loss pills and remedies all promised the earth but none of which I could afford so the next day I pulled on my oversize jeans and tee shirts much bigger than I needed and go back to school hating myself and hoping nobody would notice me”

The final straw for Charli was catching a glimpse of herself in a full length mirror and she realised something had to be done as the school prom had been such a disaster for her – she had squeezed herself into a dress into a changing room and got stuck and the assistant had to get her out of it without damaging the dress but it damaged Charli’s self confidence and she couldn’t wait to run out of the shop and die with embarrassment. Using the internet instead looking for miracle cures she researched slimming groups near her and was impressed by the “never go hungry and lose weight “claim by Slimming World that she made the first realistic promise to herself in years and vowed to attend the following week. On that first night Charli really had to make herself get in the car and drive to the meeting – “ All day I was nervous and terrified I would be the largest one there – I sat outside watching people walk in – however I found an inner strength and walked in – I was so glad I did the room was full of chatty people and the Consultant Emma came over to me and made me feel so welcome I knew at that point I had found the answer and couldn’t wait to come back the following week” As the weeks went by – Charli lost weight and became an active part of the group – sharing ideas and support with everyone – food had been such an enemy for Charli over her life that now she was learning to love food and really felt in control and knew she had found the answer .

“Eating food I love and eating till I am full is great – my favourite meal is chicken and pasta in a tomato sauce – that is so quick and easy to make and is nothing like “diet meals” I have eaten before. Charli has now lost over 4stone in 6 months and has gained so much confidence that is now a Slimming World Consultant at the Crigglestone group held at the Community Centre on Cliffe Rd on Thursday’s at 7pm from 29TH April 2010.

This summer will be full of pastels, nudes and blush colours according to the spring and summer shows. However the most frequently asked question that I get at the moment is, ‘how can I wear the nudes and pastels?’ We can all wear the lighter shades and colours that summer brings, but it is HOW you wear them that makes the difference between looking your best and looking like an ice cream sundae.

How to wear Summer pastels

Natural blondes with very fair skin and light coloured eyes are lucky and can wear pastel pink, apricot, mint, primrose yellow, soft white and cream. You can layer these together so your whole look is light and summery

Asos

If your colouring is dark and strong with dark brown/black hair, dark eyes, eyelashes and brows, be careful with the nudes and pastel colours worn on their own. You must mix them with darker colours for contrast.

Dorothy Perkins

Red hair and warm skin tones? Apricot, peach, cream, primrose yellow and mint will be the flavours for you! Avoid blues and lavenders.

Cool ladies with grey, salt and pepper or steely grey hair have fun with white, baby pink, icy

blue, lavender and icy green. Stick to blue based colours and avoid peach, apricot and yellow.

Clear colouring with dark hair and bright striking eyes (be they blue, green or topaz)? Wear lemon yellow, light apricot, mint, light aqua and white with a darker contrast of navy, black or charcoal. You could also try mixing jewel colours and brights with your pastels e.g. scarlet, true blue or periwinkle.

M&S

The British soft colouring of dark blonde (mousy) or brown hair, soft and muted eye colouring needs to be careful with pastels. You look your best with tones of the same colour. So try mint and turquoise, blush pink and damson, sky blue and teal, stone, taupe and shell together.

Soft reds are defiantly the way forward for spring; this suits a milky skin tone. Winter saw strong, vivid hybrid red, spring gallops in with more faded tones of mahogany, strawberry’s & flame shades of copper.

Flame copper shades teamed with dark dramatic eyes for a rock chick look, look amazing! Add interest to a short crop with contrasting tones of ruby red, mahogany & copper.

A lot of short haired ladies say “they never look any different” here’s your answer.

Change the way you have your hair done, your designer can design a technique as individual as you are.

If not maybe it’s time you changed your hair designer..?

Home care essentials...

The secret to keeping reds is condition; a tightly closed cuticle will lock in the large colour molecule of artificial red. The supermarket sweep products just don’t step up to the challenge.. We use & recommend Paul Mitchell Colour care system , used effectively extends the life of colour

The secret to looking 10 years younger is one of the hottest topics around at the moment. Popular interest has spawned various TV programmes on the subject such as the Channel 4 TV show of the same name.

However, there are very few people that can genuinely say that they have achieved it. One person that can is plastic surgery patient Franceska Harrison, (right) who had a face and neck lift, eye bag removal (blepharoplasty), endoscopic brow lift and coleman fat transfer under Mr Fourie at Spire Methley Park Hospital (also consulting at Spire Barnsley Consulting Rooms). The whole procedure cost only £8,500. Franceska found Mr Fourie by visiting one of their cosmetic surgery open evenings and was very happy with the overall results.

10 Years Younger!

The Spire Methley Park Hospital is one of the largest cosmetic hospitals in the local area which has an extensive team of Plastic Surgery consultants, all members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) or BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons) or both. Procedures on offer include breast surgery, body reshaping and facial surgery. The hospital holds regular open evenings where patients can find out more information. Mr Fourie also holds open events at the Spire Barnsley Consulting Rooms, where patients can listen to presentations, see before and after pictures and also have a free one on one “mini” consultation with Mr Fourie. Visit www.methleypark.co.uk for more information.

Of course, a good fitness regime and keeping your teeth in good condition as well as keeping up with the latest fashion can also help beat the aging process and can take years of your overall appearance.

Take Time to Breathe - by Maria Nortcliffe

Appointments also available at Skin &Tonic334a Sheffield Road, Birdwell, Barnsley Telephone: 01226 747727

As I am writing this the last few days have made us all believe that winter has, at last, now gone.

Of course knowing our weather patterns this could all change before you read this. But hasn’t it been lovely to get out into the garden for an hour or throw open the windows whilst doing the housework or go for a walk. You feel as though you can breathe again and something makes you want to breathe quite deeply.

Breathing, we all do it, from the moment we are born to the moment we die. It is a bodily function that happens constantly, and with out us really being conscious of it, controlled by the respiratory centre in the brainstem. We hardly take any notice of our breathing until our body is under stress from exercise or exertion and we say we are out of breath or breathless. Sometimes the breathlessness can be an indicator of health problems. For most of us we simply continue to breathe minute after minute, marked by the rise and fall or our chest.

As we breathe we take in air through the mouth or nose and it is taken straight to the lungs. Oxygen passes into the blood stream and is pumped by the heart around the body. It is taken to all cells of the body where it is used, along with nutrients from our food and turned into the energy we need to function properly. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of the process, is returned to the blood stream and taken back to the lungs where it is expelled from the body as we breathe out. Did you know that when we breathe we only breathe out one tenth of the amount of air in the lungs and breathe in the same amount which mixes with the stale air already in the lungs?

With all this in mind, we can think of many different effects our breathing can have on our body. A normal adult at rest will breathe between 13 and 17 times per minute. If we are suffering from stress, as most of us are at work, breathing becomes shallower and more rapid without us really being aware. In this case the quality of air in our body is decreasing because we are replacing less of the capacity of the lungs. This must mean that we become tired and lose the ability to concentrate. I wonder how many people take time to move away from their desk, stretch out muscles to encourage the flow of blood and oxygen around the body and take a few deep breaths to replace all that stale air in the lungs.

The idea that breathing can affect our blood pressure is nothing new. If we are under moments of great stress panic or anger we are told to “Take a deep breath”. Breathing slowly and deeply calms the heart and nerves. Slow breathing helps to relax muscle tension especially in the chest area allowing blood vessels to open and relieve pressure on the heart. If we are breathing deeply into the abdomen we are also using the diaphragm more efficiently. The diaphragm is a large muscle supporting the lungs. As we inhale the muscle contracts and flattens, the intercostals muscles between the ribs contract and pull the ribcage upwards and outwards causing the lungs to expand and draw in air When air is expelled the chest muscles and the diaphragm relax. This expansion and retraction helps to circulate a surprising amount of blood and helps to relieve some of the pressure on the heart.

So what does this mean for us? Techniques for breathing are used when people have had surgery and particularly chest surgery and also for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Breathing techniques are used to help people with anxiety, to release tension and aid relaxation. And of course breathing techniques are used to aid pain relief in childbirth. These are quite specific examples but quite frankly, breathing techniques are useful to help everyone relax.

So here are a few tips to help you:

• Choose comfortable, non-restricting clothing.

• Find a comfortable place where you will not be disturbed.

• It may be helpful to play some relaxing music.

• Lie down if you can. Your breath needs to go into the abdomen and this happens naturally in this position.

• As you breathe in be aware of the breath going into the abdomen as it rises, and falling again as you breathe out.

• Take several breaths and imagine the body feeling heavier and sinking into the ground as you relax.

• Concentrate on the breath and try to make it even as you breathe. Count to 5 slowly as you breathe in and again as you breathe out. You will notice a pause as you change from breathing in to breathing out.

• You will find a rhythm that is comfortable for you.

• The more you practice this the easier it will become. You can then begin to slow down your breathing at the same time taking deeper breaths.

• Yoga and ‘Tai chi classes are very good for helping with breathing techniques and relaxation if you enjoy working with a group.

So during these lovely spring days remember that breathing, although the most natural thing in the world, needs a bit of attention occasionally. Breathing properly can have an amazing effect on your mood and levels of stress and anxiety. Breathing well can increase the efficiency of your body but can also help to refresh your mind. Enjoy it! Breathe in the freshness of Spring! Maria Nortcliffe M.A.R M.I.C.H.T

Chillies

Studies show that chillies can raise the metabolism by as much as 20%. The consumption of chillies can also make you feel great as they also have the power to release endorphins; the happy hormone.

Fennel

Fennel, known to many as the slimming herb is actually great for stimulating the metabolism. Try chewing on fennel as this is also good for suppressing the appetite and reduces the urge for sweet treats.

Garlic

Garlic is a hot herb known to increase your metabolic rate by as much as 30%. Garlic is also great for aiding digestion and is known to reduce high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a great appetite suppressant and prevents insulin spikes that are so common after we eat. Insulin spikes are a body’s signal to store fat, rather than burn it. Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to your porridge, which is also a great way to fill you up in the morning.

Oranges

Oranges contain flavones compounds which burn fat. Women who ate the most flavones had a scientifically lower increase in their body fat over a fourteen day period. Its best to snack on fresh fruit slices, but if you prefer orange juice you should stick to the juice with pulp for the best results.

Green Tea

Half an hour before a work out drink a cup of Green Tea as this is the perfect way to increase energy levels and speed up the metabolism fast. Green tea can

also inhabit fat absorption and helps glucose regulation. Studies also show that Green Tea works as an appetite suppressant and has been known to considerably reduce one’s calorie intake for the day.

Berries

Especially cranberries, goji, blueberries - Not only are berries loaded with Vitamin C, but they also help you burn up to 30% more fat when you exercise. So, if you’re heading for the gym, eat a cup of berries before you go to make that workout do 30% more work for you.

Eggs

Research shows that eating an egg at breakfast can actually make you feel fuller for longer and prevent any hunger pangs. The best way to eat your eggs is to avoid fried versions, instead try poaching or boiling them. To ensure that your body absorbs the iron content within the eggs try and have a drink high in vitamin C at the same time.

Trying to lose weight? Try these Fat Fighting Foods! Losing weight can be a losing battle, Kumud Gandhi, food scientist and founder of The Cooking Academy and The Saffron House says “Dieting doesn’t work for most people due to a combination of hormonal changes, muscle loss, and flat out frustration”.

If your body has a shortage of calories, your body’s natural response is to conserve fat so it will hold on to everything you eat in case it will not be fed for a while again. The body instinctively goes into starvation mode and the body’s metabolic rate will drop quite considerably making it more difficult to lose weight. The point is not to starve yourself but instead make wise food choices. Here are a couple of foods that actually fight fat!

STEAK

The introduction of red meat into your diet is a great way to increase your iron and protein levels without increasing your calorie intake. Eating lean cuts of red meat can help to keep muscle mass during weight loss; muscle also incinerates more calories than fat making it easier to shed those stubborn pounds that are hard to shift.

The phosphorus content present in meat is much more easily absorbed than that present in cereals and legumes. This is owing to the fact that cereals and legumes contain phosphorus, usually in the form of phytic acid that must be hydrolyzed before absorption. Meat also serves as the main source for the intake of vitamin B12.

Be warned however, meat does not contain fibre which is essential to maintaining a good digestive system, so try and limit your intake to just a few portions per week. Also try and avoid preserved meats such as bacon, sausages and salami as these are very high in saturated fats and salts nitrites which have been known to be responsible for causing certain cancers.

Tip: - Try eating your red meat with mustard. The turmeric in mustard is what makes the yellow, and what makes mustard slow the growth of fat tissue.

Set foot inside the Kings Arms and you take a step back in time, for this well-loved pub at Heath is thought to have been an inn since at least the second half of the 18th century.

The pub is a warren of small rooms with low ceilings, stone-flagged floors and old cast iron fireplaces, still lit by gas and linked by narrow corridors. Anyone looking to enjoy a drink at the Kings Arms will be pleased to know that, in an era when too many pubs have disconnected their hand pumps, it remains committed to traditional cask ales.

The Kings Arms is a great place for a drink at any time of year and you will be greeted with a warm welcome whenever you choose to visit.

Are you fed up with your home interior, wanting to move house or simply waiting to get to your next property before you pick up that paintbrush and invest in accessories?

This month, we speak to Sarah Walker, property expert and former presenter of To Buy or Not to Buy on BBC1 to find out how you can improve, move and take the improvements with you!

2010 trends2010 will see bold colours, patterns, textures and fabrics gaining their rightful place in your interior - coupled with statement flooring, retro styles, glamour, and dramatic lighting. Trends will marry up to give interiors a whole new slant.

How can I improve if I’m planning to move?

”Although reports on what’s happening in the property market vary, you could be waiting for a while until your property sells. In the meantime, there’s no reason to live with a dated interior and you don’t have to let someone else enjoy the fruits of your labour. Another option would be to partner with a reliable company for a quick and easy sale.”

Sarah, who works closely with property specialist needtosellquick.co.uk, continues: “We come across a number of people who want to sell their properties to free up cash, move up or down the chain, avoid lengthy selling processes or simply clear debt. The main issue is finding a buyer for your property quickly.” With offices in Barnsley, the company offers homeowners a quick and convenient route to selling their property fast”.

“Selling to a reliable company that can complete the transaction quickly and smoothly is certainly an option worth considering. It can sometimes become the light at the end of a very long tunnel.”

“If you are thinking of moving, invest in some new pieces of furniture, statement lighting and accessories that pick up on key trends, which will be attractive to prospective buyers and can then move with you when you do.”

To find out more please visit www.needtosellquick.co.uk or email [email protected] with your home interior query to get some advice from Sarah.

Eye on Local Photography

Barnsley photographer Andy Hemingway’s landscape photography has recently received a lot of attention. His ‘Gritstone & Sky’ exhibition at Wakefield’s Coach House Gallery received critical acclaim, while a number of his images have won awards from two on-line photography magazines.

Andy’s passion for the landscape began during childhood. Born and raised in the Pennine town of Huddersfield, regular walks on the surrounding hills with his father, cemented an early familiarity with Yorkshire’s rugged and unique landscape. “For me, landscape photography is much more that just capturing a view. I often research the history, folklore and geology of the areas that I shoot and try to convey something of the spirit of the place. I often return to the same locations during different times of day and season’s to capture the effects of light and weather throughout the year and try to capture something of my love for these landscapes. The locations that I visit have not only been formed by the forces of nature but have a long history of activity by humans, that has shaped the landscape that we currently see. From the farmers of the Neolithic, through exploitation by industry and commerce, to the leisure playgrounds of today. I believe that the landscape of the Pennines is one of the finest in the world. It may not have the mountains and craggy coastlines of Scotland and Wales, that are currently so popular with photographers but the drystone walls, tumbled down farms, heather and rock strewn moorland, the gritstone edges all feel like home to me.

Andy’s forthcoming exhibitions include Two Visions (with Chris Charlesworth): Month of Sundaes (Attic Gallery), Marsden. 5th - 30th April 2010. A Dramatic Edge (with Richard Cooper and Nick Walton): Arkwright’s Mill, Cromford, Matlock Bath. 20th - 27th August 2010

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Based on the 2003 novel by Dennis Lehane.

OK, first - let me get this out of the way as the Yorskshireman in me hasn’t been able to let this lie since I saw this film. I saw Shutter Island at The Odeon in Londons West End - at the box office I was absolutely flabber-gasted to be told that my seat was going to cost me 13 quid............ thats “Thirteen Pounds”. No Popcorn. No Nacho’s Jalapinos and Salsa, No Wine Gums, No Pop....just the seat. So as I grumpily sat down I was already telling myself “This had better be the best film I have seen this year” and as I’ve already seen the 3D extravagansas that were Avatar and Alice in Wonderland - Shutter Island had a massive cinamatic Mountain to climb.

OK now thats done with, here’s another gripe - I used to greatly dislike Leonardo Dicaprio as somewhat of a pretty boy and not much else when it came to his late 90’s output. His brilliant early performances in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries and This Boys Life were followed by what I can only describe as massive disapointments in Titanic, Romeo & Juliet, and The Man in the Iron Mask (which I hated). However, with his portrayal of Amsterdam Vallon in Gangs of New York, his first of four films with director Martin Scorsese he seemed to mature into a brilliantly rounded character actor in my eyes. I started to appreciate his acting diversity and think of The Departed and Blood Diamond as fine movies.

Shutter Island takes place almost entirely on an island that houses a hospital for the criminally insane in the mid-50s. From the minute they disembark, US marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are confronted by a nightmarish, gothic bedlam of lost souls and sinister seeming doctors and psychiatrists, including the mysterious Dr John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the man in charge of the place. The two men are on the island to investigate the strange disappearance of a patient locked up after murdering her three children. But it soon becomes clear that Teddy has his own reasons for visiting, which are connected to the death of his wife a few years earlier.

Every horror cliché is here, from evil doctors to children’s corpses, screeching rats and lunatics with stapled heads sat rotting behind bars. There’s not a moment’s respite from the melodrama, in a film with so many twists you

need to be right on the button to keep up. Shutter Island is brilliant. I loved every minute and I was shocked that it ran to 140 minutes, for this is a film which has never a dull moment. Once you get past the trickery, Shutter Island offers sumptuous, enthralling, shivery gothic film-making with a hardboiled heart and a sly line in asylum humour.

Like Hitchcock’s Vertigo, to which it has been compared by many London critics, I wonder whether Shutter Island might be seen in a more positive light in years to come as most reviews have been pretty poor. Martin Scorsese I believe suffers somewhat from the exalted standing of his own back catalogue when it comes to critical notices. Had it been filmed by a newcomer, rather than the familiar, bushy-browed New Yorker who shot Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Casino, Shutter Island might just have received top notch reviews all round. I felt the same way about Quentin Tarantino when I saw Inglourious Basterds........Awesome as it was I kept seeing reviews saying “Not as good as Jackie Brown. Not as Good as Pulp Fiction”. True as this may be - the film was a fine film in it’s own right and suffered due to the greatness of the movies that preceeded it. As Shutter Island is, it is a skilfully concocted psychological thriller noir, brilliantly acted with great performances all round.

The only real issue I had with the film was the score, which while suitably ominous and booming was ridiculously overbearing at times. During the opening scene as they arrived on the island I was beginning to wonder if someone in the control room had turned the volume up to 11 by accident. All in all though - I Loved it....possibly the best film I have seen this year and having already seen Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland and James Camerons Avatar AND with the seat costing me a whopping 13 quid (no less). Thats a MASSIVE call for this movie. Five Stars! GM HHHHH

Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes claimed the vacant British super-featherweight title with a unanimous points win over Andy Morris, 26, in Huddersfield last month.

Former Commonwealth bronze medallist Morris stepped in after the withdrawal of Sykes’s original opponent, Ricky Burns, to produce a thrilling contest. The two fighters served up a domestic classic that could have gone either way on the judges’ scorecards. In the end Dewsbury-born Sykes got the nod.

A delighted Sykes told Sky Sports afterwards. “I thought I was going to take over in the middle rounds but he grinded it out and it was a real close decision. It’s been a lot of hard work and a real team effort. I’m over the moon to win it because Andy was very tough.”It’s a first Lonsdale belt for undefeated Sykes, who is managed by Linthwaite-based Chris Aston and trained by Julian McGowan.

Tigers see Crowds RiseIn the three home Superleague games so far this season Castleford Tigers have recorded an average attendance increase of over 10% for the comparative fixtures from last season.

The attendance between Castleford Tigers and Wigan Warriors last month was the biggest crowd at The Jungle so far this season. It was also the highest for a fixture between the two clubs since 2006.

8,429 fans turned out to see the dramatic encounter, which saw the injury-hit Tigers give a spirited display in the 22-36 defeat to the league-leaders. Simon Mowbray, Head of Marketing and Development commented: “The increase in average attendance is very encouraging, especially considering that our opening two games were shown live on Sky Sports. “The atmosphere was electric and the family entertainment, combined with the rugby league action on the pitch, provided a high-quality day out. A visit to The Jungle guarantees a family-friendly environment with lots of fun activities for all ages to get involved with.”

Fighting Talk from Robins!“We owe it to everybody to keep working our socks off in every match” Mark Robins said last month after going down 0-1 to Doncaster Rovers. “We do not want to finish mid-table. We want to be higher than that. We want to go out and pick up points from every match”. As the Eye went to press the team sat at 15th with a tough run of

games to come having lost 3 on the bounce. Unfortunately if the Tykes continue to show their defensive frailties that seem to have resurfaced of late they could drop into the bottom half near mind mid table....what do you think? Let us know at [email protected].

SPORTY-LOOK HIGH-SPEC JAZZ Si LAUNCHEDHonda (UK) is introducing a sporty Si grade of its popular British-built supermini - the Jazz. The Jazz Si’s enhanced looks and stylish extra features should appeal to younger drivers who want their car to stand out from the crowd.

The Jazz Si wears 16-inch Chronos alloys which set it apart from standard models. A chrome sports front grille and rear spoiler add to the sporty look. Stylish embroidered carpet mats and Si branding on the boot lid and glove box highlight the car’s high specification. Customer feedback showed that younger Jazz owners were keen to stand out from the large number of other Jazz cars on the road.

They preferred bigger wheels and enjoyed the additional stylish touches of the first generation Jazz Sport. The Si grade has been launched in response to this, and combines sporty good looks with the Jazz’s fuel-sipping engine, low running costs, low emissions, value for money specification and C-sector space and practicality.

The Jazz is one of the UK’s most celebrated models, winning around 30 industry awards for reliability and customer satisfaction. Now built in Britain, Honda Associates will be ensuring that the Jazz maintains this level and continues to delight customers. The

Si grade is priced at an additional £870 over the 1.2 SE and 1.4 ES models, but offers nearly £2,000 worth of extra equipment. Jazz 1.2-litre Si £12,835 on-the-road Jazz 1.4-litre Si £13,510 on-the-road The Jazz Si goes on sale from 1 April, 2010 with a choice of really competitive finance offers for customers. Both the 1.2 and 1.4 Si models launch with great PCP packages offering an APR of 5.9% over three years with a 25% deposit, or for 7.4% over three years with a 10 per cent deposit.

Potholes on Wakefields roads could be much easier to spot in future, thanks to a design idea created by students in Italy. The initiative was uncovered by road maintenance campaign website, potholes.co.uk, as it continues its efforts to improve the state of the UK’s roads.

Domenico Diego and Cristina Corradini have designed the “Street Safe Initiative,” which comprises a brightly-coloured layer of asphalt a few inches beneath the surface of the road, which becomes visible when the road surface breaks up, making potholes easier to see and avoid.

The Eye reckons it’s a novel idea but. ..should we be looking at how to reduce costs by doing the job right in the first place, rather than creating expensive solutions that only have an effect once the pothole is already there? The Jury is out....

NEWS IN BRIEF: PotholesDue to the bad weather of late we here at The Eye are sure you have noticed the amount of Potholes on our roads of late....
