The Deerslayer, which was held at Winged Deer Park on April 16, drew 279 competitors and non-competitors for the city’s first 5K obstacle course race. Participants approached the start line with enthusiasm and sheer determination to prove they were up to the challenge of the grueling 3.1 mile course.

The challengers ran, jumped, crawled, climbed, and slide their way to the finish line. Overall winner in the men’s division, Mantle Roth, ran the course in only 24 minutes and 34 seconds. Mary Salamone, winner in the women’s division, hit the finish line at 31 minutes and 56.2 seconds.

The proceeds from the race will be used by the foundation to provide outreach and program support for adults 55+ through Senior Services. Next year’s event is set for April 1, 2017. Are YOU up for the challenge?

Athletics Division Highlights ~

Park Services is busy with athletic field prep for tournament and league play at all locations.

Mowing season is in full swing at parks and recreation locations.

Legion Street Pool has been painted in preparation for the up-coming season; special thanks to the Washington County inmate crew for preparing and painting the pool. Work continues on improvements to the restroom building adjacent to the pool.

Removal of the obstacles from the Deerslayer 5K has begun.

Administration Highlights ~

The spring youth soccer program opened in full swing on April 2. A 10/11 year old division was added to the program this year. Fifty-two teams will play this year at Winged Deer and Civitan Parks.

The softball season kicked-off with sixty-five adult teams on April 18 at Winged Deer Park.

Youth T-ball and Machine Pitch softball will began at Carnegie Park on April 23.

Fall youth soccer registration will open on May 2 online and in the athletic office.

The summer tennis program will open for registra-tion on May 2. Lessons will begin June 6 at the Liberty Bell Tennis Center. The program is open to both youth and adults.

A new sign was installed at Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek. A special thanks to Public Works for the installation.

Rotary Park opened April 1 and will remain open until May 31, due to the delay in the boundless playground construction.

A Teen Trivia Night was introduced on April 19 with 10 participants. The program offered games, refreshments, and a trivia contest.

Start Smart Golf began this month with ten enrolled in the program.

A senior division of Start Smart Tennis will begin on April 5. The program, which is part of the Life Long Sports Journey series, will introduce seniors to the great game of tennis.

The Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast was held on April 2 with 50 in attendance. The proceeds from the event will benefit Kiwanis Park.

Attendance for homeschool and preschool programs totaled thirty-five.

City Services Day was held this month. Participants were treated to a sampling of the center’s program.

Recreation Services Division ~ On April 11, Princeton Arts Center hosted Showing Our Colors, a

colorful display of talent from friends and family of Core Services of Northeast Tennessee. The talented artist, participated in a splatter paint activity during the opening of their show. Their artwork will remain on display at the center throughout April.

Carver Recreation Center, through a joint effort with the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, provided the community’s youth with a program on the human body.

Thirty-nine hikers joined Nature Program Coordinator Connie Deegan on April 2 to take in the beauty of the Virginia Bluebells at Winged Deer Park. Local artists were on site painting during the hike.
