Who are we?About Argyll Walking Holidays is based in the south-west Highlands of Scotland. It is run by Frieda Bos in co-operation with a team of guides who are not only keen walkers, but also know Scotland extremely well in all its aspects. We run high-quality, small-scale, essentially personal hiking vacations, and we view our clients as friends who are entitled to a professional service. We spend time in the field to plan and meticulously prepare each holiday so that we are confident of offering you an out-of-the-way experience worthy of the tradition of John Muir’s “natural beauty hunger”.

We organise our walking holidays with freshness and enthusiasm so that you can get the most out of visiting this beautiful land.

We have been operating since 1995 and many of our clients have returned for a second, third or even fourth and fifth time.

Sustainable holidaysFollowing John Muir’s inspiring example, we are dedicated to preserving and promoting the value of Scotland’s wild areas by doing our best to reduce the environmental impact of our walking holidays and ensuring the long-term sustainability of tourism in the area. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are one of Britain and Europe’s last wildernesses, and we share with all who live or visit here a responsibility to protect and conserve their fragile ecosystems.About Argyll is a member of Green Tourism. This organisation encourages responsible and sustainable tourism. It has recognised our efforts with a Gold Award, the highest award possible.

PeopleOur groups are made up of individuals who, whatever their background, share a common love of walking and a joy in discovering people and places, history and wildlife and all the other aspects of life in Scotland. Wherever they are from, they are all curious to find out what’s around the next corner. In recent years, our walkers have come from the USA, Canada, mainland Europe, Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. This international mixture has made for a thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere which is shared equally by those who come on their own, and those who book with their partner or friends. We know that several new and lasting friendships have come about through walking with ‘About Argyll’. Why not come and join us this year?

Walking or hiking? The word ‘hiking’ isn’t used as much in the UK as it is in North America. In the UK we tend to use ‘walking’ to cover such a wide range of activities that it can be misleading. North American readers should probably think of About Argyll’s walks as hikes, but at the gentler end of the range.

We offer two grades of holidays:

(Luxury) walking tours: Our (luxury) walking/hiking tours are an excellent introduction to hiking in Scotland for people with good basic fitness. The holiday combines hiking with visits to places of interest. Daily distances won’t exceed 6 miles/10km, with varying amounts of ascent, and we don’t expect to hike for longer than 4 hours (plus stops). Most of the hiking will be on paths, tracks or quiet roads, although the surfaces can be wet and rough. There will be some steep sections along the way, but no climbing greater than 1200 feet (365m), even in total.

Walking/hiking holidays:Our walking holidays and hiking vacations are designed for people who are fit and used to walking all day. We will walk up to 11 miles/17.5km 6 hours (plus stops) per day with an average 1150ft/350m of ascent. On one day it might be as much as 3000ft/900m, but there are also easier days. Our routes sometimes cross pathless glens, climb mountains or thread remote passes, and there may be some scrambling. On most days, as much of our time is spent off path as on it. Scotland can be very wild and tough going: 10 miles here is often much harder than 10 miles elsewhere. All that said, we don’t want to break any speed records, especially not when going uphill, and you’ll have all the rewards of walking in the most beautiful and fascinating parts of the Highlands and Islands.

Isles of Arran, Islay & Jura

This luxury hiking tour will take you to three very distinctive islands: Arran in the Firth of Clyde, and Islay and Jura, islands of the Inner Hebrides.Arran is often described as “Scotland in miniature”, because of the way its diverse landscape reflects that of Scotland as a whole. Islay, once home of the MacDonald ‘Lords of the Isles’, is famous for its many whisky distilleries, farming, bird life, beaches and cliffs. Jura is wild and more rugged than Islay and the Red deer outnumber people many times over. The walks and visits to places of interest will reflect the diversity found on these islands: rugged mountains, beaches, cliffs, dunes, salt marshes, farmland, hills, moors and waterfalls. You will visit ancient monuments, historic sites, and abandoned townships as well as attractive villages and a whisky distillery. We will stay in small 4-star hotels, so that you may relax in comfort after your day out walking.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. 4-star hotel accommodation on Arran and Islay.

Dates: 13-20 August.

Price: £2500. (breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner). Double room for single occupancy: £480 extra.

Scottish Highlands & Skye

This tour goes to the Morar peninsula in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. We’ll travel by train along the scenic West Highland Railway line from Glasgow to Glenfinnan crossing the famous Glenfinnan viaduct. The following day we will stretch our legs exploring Morar including walking on the Silver Sands. Then it’s off for a boat on the beautiful Loch Nevis and a hike along Loch Morar. After your day out you can relax over a good meal and a drink in your hotel while enjoying the friendly atmosphere of a Scottish Country House. And then on to the Isle of Skye - the misty isle. Here we will take a boat up Loch Scavaig for a walk along the shores of Loch Coruisk, surrounded by the Black Cuillin mountains, explore the Trotternish Peninsula and visit the west of Skye for a tour of the Talisker Distillery and a walk to the tidal island of Oronsay. Our hotel on Skye is tucked away in the north of the island, well away from where most tourists stay.

Dates: 7-14 May, 16-23 July, 17-24 September.

Price: £2765. (breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner). Double room for single occupancy: £420 extra.

Perthshire, Argyll & the Isles

This trip will take us to Perthshire, in the heart of Scotland, and Argyll, on its western fringes. Highland Perthshire is far from the sea, in Scottish terms. With its high mountains, long, deep glens and abundance of trees, it is a very distinctive part of Scotland, contrasting perfectly with the seaboard of Argyll. The hills of Argyll are more rugged and the glens steeper and shorter and it has a long, broken, islanded coast. Our walks will take us into the long glens of Highland Perthshire and wild Glen Coe. They will include Scotland’s rich history, the prehistoric and early historic monuments in Kilmartin Glen, crannogs in Loch Tay and the 16th century Castle Menzies. You will also walk on remote islands, in ancient Caledonian Forest and on open hillside. The tour finishes on the Isle of Mull from where we’ll walk on the Isle of Ulva and visit the islands of Lunga, famous for the puffins breeding here and Staffa with its spectacular basalt columns.

Description: 10 days; 9 nights. 4-star hotel accommodation in Perthshire, Oban and Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Dates: 2-11 June, 8-17 September.

North-west Highlands

If you love remote places, open moorland, spectacular mountains and a long coastline, this walking tour has it all. Torridon and Sutherland are among the most remote parts of mainland Scotland and by many regarded as the finest areas of wild land in Scotland. The tour starts in Torridon with its sandstone mountains. The impressively gouged glacial trench Glen Torridon and Loch Torridon runs between these magnificent peaks, bordered by pinewoods and beautiful vistas, offering great coastal and mountain walks.Sutherland, our base during the second half of the holiday, has a stark, eerie landscape. Up from undulating moorland rise a series of remarkable mountains. These peaks are very steep and completely separate from one another. They are eroded into fantastic, individual shapes, making this one of the most memorable landscapes in Scotland. According to Norse legend, this was where the gods practised mountain building. They did it on a grand scale. We will hike between these mountains into glens where rivers tumble down and along the coast with sea stacks and sandy beaches.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights Accommodation in Torridon and Sutherland

Dates: 28 May-4 June, 13-20 August.

Price: £1780. (breakfast, picnic lunch and 5 dinners). Double room for single occupancy: £315 extra.

South-west Highlands & Islands

This tour explores Argyll in the south-west Highlands; the heartland of ancient Scotland, and two islands of the Inner Hebrides: Kerrera and Islay. We stay in Oban during the first half of the week, walk on the isle of Kerrera visiting Gyle Castle, hike in dramatic Glen Coe and walk through the hills north of Oban, enjoying the views across Loch Linnhe, to the impressive Dunstaffnage Castle. On our way to Islay, we’ll walk in Kilmartin Glen to see the prehistoric and early historic monuments. You will see chambered burial cairns, a stone circle, standing stones and Dunadd, the capital hill-fort of the Scots. Islay is one of the largest of the Hebridean islands. Its varied coast of high cliffs, sandy and rocky bays, caves and arches gives glorious land and seascapes. Once the home of the MacDonald ‘Lords of the Isles’, whose power-base was at Finlaggan; nowadays Islay is famous for its malt whiskies. Our walks take us along the coast and to historical sites.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation in Oban and on Islay.

Dates: 18-25 June, 23-30 July, 24 September-1 October.

Price: £1465 (breakfast, picnic lunch). Single room: £122.50 extra.

Orkney Islands

This walking tour will give you the chance to fully experience the Orkney Islands, a place of big open skies, rounded hills, beautiful beaches and well kept farms. Only on Hoy does the landscape take on a wilder feel, with rolling hills and towering cliffs. Orkney is dubbed the ‘Egypt of the North’ because of its amazing historic and ancient monuments. That, together with its dramatic coastlines, beautiful beaches and abundant wildlife make it a great place for walking. Our walks take us to Birsay, Rousay, Yesnaby, Hoy and Deerness, and we will also visit many of the numerous historic and ancient monuments including the heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Skara Brae, Maeshowe and the Ring of Brodgar.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation in Kirkwall (6 nights) and on the ferry (1 night).

Dates: 11-18 June, 2-9 July, 9-16 July, 30 July-6 August.

Shetland Islands

Shetland is an archipelago of islands 100 miles north of the Scottish mainland. At 60 degrees north, Shetland enjoys almost 24 hours daylight during the summer. It is a unique place with beautiful landscapes, abundant wildlife and a rich cultural heritage, and the human history on the islands stretches back to Neolithic times. Iron Age brochs and Norse archaeological sites are among the best in the world. More than a million birds breed in very large colonies; and nowhere else in Britain, and hardly anywhere else in Europe, can you get so close, so easily, to so many sea birds. We will explore the islands on foot and from the water. Although there aren’t always paths, short grass underfoot makes for easy going.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation in Lerwick (5 nights) and on the ferry (2 nights).

Dates: 13-20 May, 17-24 June, 8-15 July, 15-22 July, 5-12 August, 12-19 August.

Exploring Mull

Mull is one of the largest of the Hebridean islands, but it is bitten into by so many sea lochs that the sight and sound of the waves is never far away. Tall cliffs, sandy bays, caves and arches deliver wonder after wonder along the coasts, while high mountains inland supply a dramatic background. We have a very good chance of seeing otters, eagles and puffins here, as Mull is one of the best places in Scotland for wildlife watching.

We’ll spend three nights in Tobermory, in the north, walking on the Treshnish peninsula with abandoned townships, high cliffs and waterfalls and on the community owned isle of Ulva, before moving to the Ross of Mull. During our stay in the Ross we explore the dramatic coastline west of Carsaig, where cliffs reach 1000ft (300m), visit the Isle of Staffa, with its basalt columns and rich bird life, and St. Columba’s isle of Iona. Weather permitting, we will climb Ben More on the last day for the widest of West Highland views.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation in Tobermory and the Ross of Mull.

Dates: 25 June-2 July, 20-27 August.

Price: £1415 (breakfast, picnic lunch). Single room: £122.50 extra.

Hiking Shetland Islands

Walking on Shetland, the most northerly archipelago of Britain. Exploring remote coastlines characterised by dramatic cliffs, long fjord like ‘voes’ and beautiful sandy beaches.

Landscapes and seascapes that make you feel as if you have found one of the most remote coastlines in the world; superb wildlife and a history that stretches from the last war right back to the dawn of civilisation - you can experience all this on Shetland. The islands that make up Shetland lie far out in the North Atlantic, geographically and historically closer to Norway than to Scotland.

Our walks will take us to all corners of Mainland and to the islands Yell and Muckle Roe.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation in Lerwick (5 nights) and on the ferry (2 nights).

Dates: 20-27 May.

Price: £1455 (breakfast, picnic lunch). Single room: £87.50 extra. Single cabin on the ferry: £120 extra.

Islay, Jura & Colonsay

This is your chance to explore three very different islands, each with something special to offer. Islay, once home to the MacDonald Lords of the Isles, is famous today for its malt whiskies and rich bird life. Hills, moors and machair are edged around by an infinitely varied coast, with rocks, beaches and dunes, salt marshes and cliffs. Jura is much more rugged and the Red deer outnumber people many times over. Colonsay is perhaps the most peaceful and remote of all the Inner Hebrides, with a quiet and welcoming atmosphere.

On Islay, we’ll explore the coastal cliffs and abandoned townships of the Oa peninsula, the dunes of Ardnave and the hills in the north-east. We’ll also visit the former stronghold of the Lords of the Isles at Finlaggan. On Colonsay, we will have a relatively gentle day, with the bonus of a wonderful ferry ride between the islands. Jura gives the opportunity for a hill walk or an exciting traverse of Corra Bheinn.

Description: 8 days; 7 nights. Accommodation on Islay.

Dates: 4-11 June, 3-10 September.

Price: £1405 (breakfast, picnic lunch). Single room: £122.50 extra.

Should reasonable efforts fail, you must bring legal action against About Argyll Walking Holidays in the courts of Scotland.

Acceptance of the above conditions is implied when a booking is made.
