convention September 19-21, 2014. The Resort at Port Arrowhead
in Lake Ozark, MO will host us for a wonderful time of fellowship and
learning opportunities. In January, I will be meeting with Gloria Sharp
and her team of busy bees, also known as the planning committee, at
the Resort to work out details and brainstorm.
INVITE your sisters “of many generations” to the Triennial Gathering
in Charlotte, NC, July 24-27, 2014. The Triennial Gathering is
another wonderful opportunity for fellowship, bonding and learning
opportunities. I would ask that you keep the six delegates and me in
prayer as we move forward into our duties representing each of you at
the Triennial Convention (the business portion prior to the gathering).
What are some things within your own congregations you
can do? INVITE your sisters “of many generations” to: your unit meetings,
your circles, monthly Bible studies and special events.
It isn’t too late to INVITE someone to attend the Triennial
Gathering. Registrations are open for quite a while.
Early bird registration deadline is January 6, 2014.
Experience enriching
workshops, stirring
worship, engaging
Bible studies and much
more! Enjoy a variety
of optional tours to
learn about Charlotte
and the surrounding
area as well.
Your ancient ruins
shall be rebuilt; you
shall raise up the
foundations of

breach, the restorer
of streets to live in.

(Board Member)
I am a new member of the
CSS board and a member of
Zion Lutheran Church in
Beloit, KS. I am active in the
women's organization,
serving as President many
years, Cluster Coordinator,
and have attended most CSS
Conventions, serving on
various committees. I am
looking forward to serving
on the board, and as
Cluster Coordinator
Liaison, I will be in charge
of the Cluster Coordinator
meeting at Garnett, KS
on February 7 and 8,
2014.

GET TOGETHER
The nine Synod Board
members and nineteen
Cluster Coordinators or
contact persons are invited
to the Cluster Coordinator
"Get Together" in Garnett,
Kansas, on Friday evening
and Saturday morning,
February 7 and 8, 2014. It
will be a fun filled,
informational meeting with
good food and fellowship.
Ten Good Reasons to Attend the Ninth Triennial Gathering
10. “Halle, Halle, Halle” (or any other
song, for that matter) will never be the
same after you’ve sung it with thousands of
Lutheran sisters.
9. You’ll return home with lots of ideas for study, service,
support, advocacy and giving…enough ideas to last for the next
three years, until we gather again in Minneapolis in 2017.
8. Where else can you dance and sing with abandon, praising
God and not worry about how you’re dressed or who’s
watching?
7. You need the time away for rest and renewal, time with other
women of bold faith and courage.
6. With the addition of the prayer shawl you knit or the one you
bring from a sister at home, we will blanket with North Carolina
Synod territory with fiber prayers.
5. Dynamic and Spirit-filled preaching will send you soaring.
4. Susan Sparks and Becca Stevens, featured speakers, can write
a personal note in your copy of their books.
3. Your offering will be joined with the offerings of all your
Lutheran sisters, and together we’ll support the ministries of
Women of the ELCA. Together we’ll make a difference!
2. You’ll make friends and build connections that will span
Charlotte to Minneapolis and beyond.
1. You will celebrate being a woman of God among women of
many generations!
Early Bird Registration ($325) began Sept 16 and will go until Jan
6, 2014. Registration materials are available online at
www.welcatg.org or contact Lisa Youngquist at 785-342-4877.

The 27th annual convention of the Central States Synod Women of the ELCA will be held
September 19-21, 2014, at The Resort at Port Arrowhead in Lake Ozark, Missouri. The theme of
the convention is “Living Water for All Generations.” Celebrating Jesus as the living water for all
generations will be the goal of our convention. The Biblical text is from Isaiah 58:11b – 58:12a, “ and
you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins
shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations.” (NRSV)
Our convention hymn will be Hymn #817(ELW), “You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore.”
We are excited that the planning for the convention has begun. Watch for registration information in
April. Start planning now! Consider planning a family vacation around the convention dates – there
is much to do at the Lake of the Ozarks! We look forward to seeing you September 19 – 21 at the
Lake!

A MESSAGE FROM: Jewell Swinney
Thank you to the Ladies of the Central States
Women of the ELCA for allowing me to serve as your treasurer for the last four years. This will be
my last article to write for Walking in the Word. I must admit it will be the only part of being
treasurer that I won't miss. Writing these articles has been a challenge for me. I am much better with
numbers and figures than I am with words.
I have enjoyed meeting some of your unit treasurers,
talking with some of you on the phone, and emailing with some of you. I hope I have been able to help
you with problems you may have had. Sometimes handling various offerings and forms for units and
clusters can be confusing. It has been a pleasure to work with all you wonderful women who serve,
and have served during these four years as other
officers and board members. Annual conventions and board meetings have been both work and fun
highlights of the years. See you at Lake of the Ozarks next September.
Remember, after Jan. 31, 2014, send your
offerings to the new treasurer, Rhonda Templing:
234B NW 210 Rd. Hoisington, KS 67544.

A MESSAGE FROM: Rhonda Templ ing Board Member /Treasurer E l ec t
This triennium I have had the privilege of serving on the church wide stewardship committee for
Women of the ELCA. Besides discussing stewardship training for the church wide board, we have
spent a lot of time discussing planned giving. What is planned giving? Planned giving is making sure
that we provide for our churches, synods, and Women of the ELCA units in our estate planning.
By doing this we are being good stewards of our resources, both now and in the future.
Unfortunately, we tend not to want to think or discuss our estate planning or we aren't sure what we
should do.
I would like to share a part of a blog that is on the Women of the ELCA website, which was written
by Emma Crossen, Director of Stewardship and Development for Women of the ELCA.
"In the '2013 Congregational Economic Impact Study,' the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving asked
respondents if their congregation offers specific courses, workshops, classes or seminars on personal
finance or charitable giving for its congregants. 36 percent said yes, 63 percent said no. The same
study found that congregations with older attendees are less likely to offer financial education."
The blog goes on to say we are not helping our members be good stewards. That is disappointing,
but it is also motivating. There is a lot of work to be done. Women of the ELCA offers free
programs like Kitchen Table Philanthropy and Grace-full living. Did you know the ELCA provides gift
planners in many parts of the country? These stewardship professionals offer workshops for
congregations and meet one-on-one with Lutherans across the country to help them plan their estate
and reach their stewardship goals-all at no cost to them.
I encourage you to think about planned giving and what you might want to do in the future. We are
lucky in Central States to have Joyce Palmer, who would be happy to help you with planned giving.
Planned giving is important to all of us, both now and in the future for Women of the ELCA.
PRAYER REQUESTS—From Your Prayer Coordinator Kathy Regehr Email prayer concerns to [email protected] and I will pass them on to our board members.
Thanksgiving and Praise Prayer
Great and wondrous God, Creator and Keeper of
the world, You are so high above and beyond my
little thoughts and ways that I cannot by my own
reason or strength comprehend the extent and
fullness of Your being. With thanks and praise, I
acknowledge Your majesty and power.
Because in Your steadfast love and mercy You
have made Yourself my Father in Jesus Christ and
re-created me in the image of His holiness,
I cannot by my own reason or strength
comprehend the extent and fullness of Your love.
In faith, I thank and praise your grace and mercy.
You do so much for me without any merit in me,
that all I can do is thank and praise Your holy
name. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen

A MESSAGE FROM: Lois Viebrock —Board Member
Discipleship is a lifelong journey of living out and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.
In doing this we will meet many, many different people. Do we always really stop to look at
that individual? The following story about Clay Balls may open up your eyes to see the true
individual.
A man was exploring a cave by the seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with
a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in
the sun to bake.
They didn’t look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave
with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out
into the ocean as far as he could.
He thought little about it until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a
rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone.
Excited the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar
treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left.
Then it struck him. He had thrown away thousands of dollars in treasures that he could
have taken home, but he had just thrown it away!
It’s like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the
external clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beautiful or
sparkling so we discount it.
We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known
or wealthy. But, we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person.
There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that
person and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay
begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth.
May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune
in friendships and opportunities to bring someone to Christ because the gems were hidden
in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them.

stew·ard·ship noun [ˈstü-ərdˈship]
stewardship is careful and responsible management of the money, property, and
resources that God has entrusted us.
stewardship is providing for the ministries that God has entrusted to our care
It was my parents who taught me stewardship. My father, who was a farmer, cared for the
land. He was careful to conserve the water he used in irrigation, rotating crops, controlling
weeds and tilling the soil so that that there was as little loss of top soil as possible. He gave
the first fruits after the harvest.
It was my mother who had the passion for giving. Her heart was with Lutheran World
Relief. She was always thinking of the hungry and giving to those who took her passion
beyond her borders. She taught me how to put together a quilt for LWR, how to physically
use a thank-offering box and the importance of participating in Bible Study and serving on
church boards.
Then I married a man who is much more benevolent than I. He faithfully tithes our
earnings and gives extra to ministries that touch his heart. God has blessed me with these
wonderful people who have witnessed the value of stewardship.
I encourage you to consider your responsibility in caring for what God has given you. Study
God’s Word and pray about what He has given you. Gather with your community of faith
and see how you can help God work in our world.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Jefferson City, MO was the location for our Women of the ELCA Mid-Missouri
Cluster IV-C gathering September 28, 2013.
Hebrews 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have,
for sacrifices are pleasing to God.” was the day’s theme.
Delicious coffee cakes, breads, fruit and juice were served as 46 women registered. In kind gifts were gathered
for Samaritan Center of Jefferson City.
Gloria Sharp welcomed everyone. We sang Hymn #836, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. A devotion on our
theme verse was given by Karen Dusheke. For our Bible study, Carolyn Bauer shared some Bible Handbook
histories of the book of Hebrews including some of Martin Luther’s thoughts and from the Good News Bible.
Volunteers read Bible verses. Questions were interspersed with singing hymn #712, Lord Whose Love in
Humble Service, verses 1 and 3.
Mary Kern spoke about the “No Bake, Bake Sale Apron.” Recipes are to be placed in apron pocket. Cash
donations are to be placed in nearby basket in exchange for a recipe. A love offering was received and Linda
Eckhoff shared a prayer.
Nanette Ellis, Cluster Coordinator conducted the business meeting. After roll call, the minutes of the Spring
Cluster meeting were read aloud and approved. Nanette noted that there were articles printed in The
Lutheran regarding Pastor Jay Graves and the rebuilt Peace Lutheran Church, Joplin. Nanette read a thank you
from Rhonda Templing, Synod Board member and Cluster Coordinator Liaison.
Newly elected Cluster Planning Board Members are Cindy Hufstedler and Arlene Manuel. Nanette Ellis and
Beth Rockelman were thanked for their service.
A motion was approved to give the entire offering of $660 to Women-ELCA Synod treasury. Katie’s Fund was
$90 and the No Bake Sale netted $68. A motion was approved to give the $68 to Samaritan Center.
Gloria Sharp introduced The Synod board members present. She highlighted the Women of ELCA
communication resources available for everyone to use. A reminder was given to continue sending offerings
to Jewell Swinney, Synod Treasurer through January 31, 2014.
Phyllis Glasker made an announcement about “Today’s Dream, Tomorrow’s Reality.”
Triennial Gathering will be at Charlotte, NC July 24-27. Contact Kathy Regehr, Central States Synod Triennial
Gathering Promoter regarding travel by bus and also for complete details. Phyllis announced that the bus will
come to St. Andrews at 10 a.m. July 22 and return late on July 28.
There is a change of date for Central States Synod Convention next year to September 19-21, 2014 at Port
Arrowhead at Lake Ozark, MO. Mary Kern gave a brief 2013 convention report.
Jenifer Vining, St. Andrews, extended an invitation to the Spring Cluster Meeting in Columbia, April 26, 2014.
Carol Braaten, announced that LWR kits and quilts may be brought to St. Andrew’s the first weekend of
October. The table prayer was given and everyone sang “Be Present at our Table.” A tasty variety of salads
were served. Table favors were fabric pumpkins made by Gloria Sharp. An autumn décor was enjoyed by all.
Janice Gerken, led a sing-a-long with Lois Viebrock pianist.
A very interesting afternoon program was presented by the talented “Apron Lady,” Myrna Schroder. Myrna
had several styles of many aprons for showing and telling. Her narrative was punctuated with music as she
played piano and sang a variety of songs. New Board Members were installed. Marie Scheperle, St. Pauls,
Lohman gave the closing prayer. Afternoon fellowship and refreshments concluded the meeting.

A MESSAGE FROM: Mar y Kern —Board Member
I have been a board member for two years and have learned so much. I was a late comer to our Unit
and we didn't get much encouragement to be active in the Cluster, conventions or the
Triennial. Thank goodness I saw the light and became active. The only reason I won't be at the
Triennial in 2014 is because I have a grandson getting married that weekend. I have been to four
other Triennials and Gloria Sharp will pre-register me for the Triennial in 2017.
My concern as a board member is bringing justice for all women and young girls. We
must be aware of the human trafficking going on in the world and protect our women and young
girls. There are many programs and non-profit groups available to help these women become assets
to our communities. Sunday, Sept. 8th, my church put together baskets and kits of personal hygiene
products for women in prison. Many of these women were exploited by human traffickers and are in
prison because of things they were made to do against their will. There are several sites on the
Central States Women of the ELCA websites addressing this concern. I encourage you all to bring
this information to the attention of your Unit.
I hope to see all of you next year at The Resort at Port Arrowhead, Lake Ozark, MO for our 2014
CSS WELCA Convention.
The Peace of the Lord be with you all.
