Whenworkbeganon
theForth&Clyde
Canal
onJune
19th1768,the
plan
was
forthe
waterway
toprogress
steadilywestwards
from
theForthviatheRiver
CarrontoStockingfield
(Maryhill),inGlasgow
.How
ever,nineyears
laterworkstoppedduetolack
offunds.Eight
yearspassed
before
money,forfeitedfrom
the
JacobiteEstates
becameavailable,allowingthe
canaltocontinue
itsjourneytotheRiver
Clyde.
In1790,at35mileslong,and
wideenough
toaccommodatesea-goingvessels,theForth&
Clyde
opened.The
canalw
asboughtby
CaledonianRailway
in1867
(asacondition
ofbuying
thePortofG
rangem
outh)andremained
underrailw
aymanagem
entuntil1948
whenit
was
takenover
bytheBritishTransport
Com
mission.
Rightsofnavigationwereextinguishedby
Parliamentin1963,how
ever,the
canalw
astriumphantly
reopened
in2001
aspartofthe
£84.5m
Millennium
Link
-thelargestcanal
restorationever
inBritain.
The
project
incorporated
theconstructionofThe
Falkirk
Wheelwhich,w
henopened
inJune
2002,
reconnectedtheForth&Clyde
