Fall Awards Banquet October 2nd at Central House Resort WALLENPAUPACK HISTORICAL SOCIETY Volume 10, Issue 21 Wallenpaupack Historical Society’s Upcoming Events This year’s fall banquet took place on Sunday, October 2nd at the Central House Resort on Milanville Road in Beach Lake. Ab Rutherford presented on Christy Mathewson, a local major- league baseball pitcher from the late 19th century, and Mike and Linda Lazaro of Penny Lane Candies and Candles were honored with a preservation award for their candy shop in Hawley. OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER WALLENPAUPACK HISTORICAL SOCIETY “Keeping the history of Lake Wallenpaupack alive and accessible for present and future generations” Veterans Program to Honor Vietnam Veterans November 16th, 1:00 p.m. The annual veterans’ day program held in November will focus on the veterans of the Vietnam War. For anyone who is a Vietnam veteran and would like to speak at the program, please call Jon Tandy (570) 857-0882. No membership program will take place on October 19th. Annual Holiday Concert and Refreshments December 21st, 12:00 noon The annual holiday concert given by the Wallenpaupack Area High School Show and Chamber Choirs will be held on December 21st at 12:00 noon instead of the normal meeting time of 1:00. Please bring a plate of holiday refreshments and lunch items to share as this will be the choir students’ lunch on that day.

Among the many i tems donated were photographs and Louis Hense l pos tcards, a 1914 edi t ion of Trad i t i on s o f Wal l enpaupack by Helen Cooke, a number of programs f rom 1906 to 1914 for the Teacher s ’ Ins t i tute he ld annual ly in Mi l ford for area educator s and director s, early 20th century minutes f rom the Pike County School Director s ’ meet ings, food rat ion s tamps f rom the Fir s t World War, a Ger man poem wri t ten about Paupack by a v i s i tor to Maple Far m c . 1901, and two pr inted poems wri t ten about Paupack by Nora Del Smith Gumble in the early 20th century.

How Nancy Kimble Lost Her Thimble (and who found it along

Lake Wallenpaupack) by Kris ten Brown

Nancy Genung Pel le t t Kimble (1841 - 1924) was the daughter o f Calv in Pe l le t t and Eunice neé Kimble. Calv in and Eunice were each chi ldren of or ig ina l Wal lenpaupack se t t ler s whom pioneered here f i r s t in 1774 and then again per manent ly in 1783. I t i s presumed that Calv in’s father and mother John and Nancy (Bingham) Pe l le t t constructed the c i rca 1800 house known as the Pel le t t house which today i s ca l led Loch Highlands. Nancy marr ied Andrew Jackson Kimble, a l so a descendant o f or ig inal se t t ler s, and they l ived for severa l

year s at the Pe l le t t house before moving next door to the S locum house, a l so known as the Porter house, in Paupack. I t was Annabur n Macdonald ( later Von Hake) who, whi le walk ing a long Lake Wal lenpaupack, d i scovered an o ld th imble and gave i t to her mother Dol ly for inspect ion. The in i t ia l s N.K. were engraved on the th imble - th i s must have been the th imble which Nancy Kimble had los t so many year s ago! Dol ly Macdonald loved to te l l s tor ies in ver se, and used th i s subject matter for a poem about Gramma Kimble who los t her th imble. The poem was pr inted in the 1961 Treasu re rs f rom Wal l enpaupack cookbook compi led by the W.S.C.S. o f the Paupack Methodis t Church. In 1980, Marian McKenzie o f Ann Arbor, Michigan, wrote to the George
