Police Believe an arguement over money led to theshooting death of an Oakland Township man earlySunday morning.

The man, Roger Griffin, 31, died after being shotwith a double barrel shotgun at his residence at1615 Predmore Road in the township's northernportion, according to officers at the MichiganState Police Post in Romeo.

A 15-year-old youth was taken into custody at thescene and transported to Children's Village inPontiac.

State Police officers were not releasing anyfurther information pending completion of a reporton the shooting.

William Thadeus Phillips was born in Sandusky,Sanilac Co., Michigan on June 22, 1865 to CeliaMudge and Laddie J. Phillips per his marriagecertificate. Gertrude Phillips, his widow,stated that "both she and her late husband hadknown Butch Cassidy, but that William T.Phillips was not the famous outlaw from Utah.Instead, she wrote, Phillips had been born andraised in an eastern state until he reached theage of 14 years, at which time (owing to dimenovel influence) he ran away and headed for theBlack Hills [along the South Dakota/Wyomingstate line]. She wrote that Phillips had metButch Cassidy at the time of the Johnson CountyWar [1892 in Johnson County, Wyoming where theHole-in-the-Wall hang-out for the robbers islocated]. He thought he knew Cassidy very, verywell ....." (Meadows, pages 115 &123)

"Bob Phillips of Sandusky, Michigan said thathis great grandfather, William J. Phillipsreared (and may even have sired the imposter. Hesaid his great grandparents lived across thestreet from Celia Mudge's family. Clarence W Houghton.

Funeral services were held Friday evening in the home at 276 Drexel,Detroit, for Clarence Walter Houghton, who passed away suddenlyWednesday, Jan. 6, with a heart attack while at Work for the PackardMotor Companv in Detroit.

The body was brought to Cass City Saturday morning and a brief serviceconducted by Rev. Charles Bayless, pastor of the Methodist Episcopalchurch, was held in the chapel at Elkland cemetery.

Clarence Walter Houghton was born in Oakland county, Jan. 26, 1872, andwas a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram Houghton. He was united inmarriage with Miss Mabel Snell in the fall of 1896 near Cass City andthey made their home on a farm, 2 1/2 miles south and 1/2 mile east ofCass City. A few years later they moved to Ruth where he went into theharness business.

The last 21 years have been spent in Detroit where Mr. Houghton workedfor the Packard company. He is survived by his wife, two sons, EarlHoughton of New Jersey and Merril Houghton of Cleveland, Ohio; threesisters and one brother, Mrs. Joe Collins and Roy Houghton of Detroit,Mrs. Edith Adams of Chicago and Mrs. Harriet Dodge of Cass City.Applies to: Clarence Walter Houghton138.

MRS, CELIA SNELL ---------------For Thirty Years a Resident in and near Cass City. ---------------The funeral services of Mrs. Celia Snell, who died on Saturday, April 8,were held from the M. E. church on Wednesday at 10 a. m. Interment wasmade in Elkland cemetery.

Celia Mudge was born October 20, 1852, at Monroe, Michigan. She wasmarried to Hezekiah Snell at Tyre on February 1, 1873. The family havemade their home at various places but for the past thirty years havelived in or near Cass City, so the deceased is no stranger to people ofthis vicinity. Mr. Snell died 13 years ago at Minden City but his bodyis interred in Elkland cemetery. Seven children were born to Mr. andMrs. Snell, six of whom are living. They are Mrs. C. W. Houghton, Mrs.C. A. Fay and Mrs. John Atfield of Detroit, Mrs. W. R. Weber of MindenCity, Mrs. A. H. Stone of Gilford and Roy Snell, who with the mother,had recently moved to the Levi Bardwell farm, where Mrs. Snell's deathoccurred.

Deceased has been a faithful attendant of the M. E. church and was akind and willing neighbor and friend, who is mourned by a host offriends as well as her fami!y. Two sisters, Mrs. Phillips and Mrs.Thibodeau, of Marine City survive her.

According the the Marriage and Death Records of Wm T "Butch" Phillips,William Thadeus Phillips was born in Sandusky, Sanilac Co., Michigan on June 22, 1865 toCelia Mudge and Laddie J. Phillips. Gertrude Phillips, his widow, stated that "both sheand her late husband had known Butch Cassidy, but that William T. Phillips was not thefamous outlaw from Utah. Instead, she wrote, Phillips had been born and raised in aneastern state until he reached the age of 14 years, at which time (owing to dime novelinfluence) he ran away and headed for the Black Hills [along the South Dakota/Wyomingstate line]. She wrote that Phillips had met Butch Cassidy at the time of the JohnsonCounty War [1892 in Johnson County, Wyoming where the Hole-in-the-Wall hang-out for therobbers is located]. He thought he knew Cassidy very, very well ....." (Meadows, pages 115&123)

"Bob Phillips of Sandusky, Michigan said that his great grandfather, William J. Phillipsreared (and may even have sired the imposter. He said his great grandparents lived acrossthe street from Celia Mudge's family. Upon noticing that thirteen year old Celia wasunable to provide proper care for her illegitimate son, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips - who had 15children of their own - volunteered to take the baby in and give him a name (as well asthe nickname "Butch") The boy lived with his adoptive family until he was fourteen, thenwent north to work in logging camps. After throwing an axe at a man during a fight,"Butch" Phillips lit out for the West, and his family never saw him again." Rebecca was b. after 1608, in Fairstead?, Essex?, England, andshe was hanged after being accused of being a Witch, with husband #3Nathaniel Greensmith, farmer, in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT on January25, 1662/63. At the time, Rebecca was described as "a lewd, ignorantand considerably aged woman." She had the misfortune to be married toa third time to Nathaniel. He had been charged for stealing smallthings, for lying in Court and of battery, but he had also accumulatedquite a lot of property, which had caused criticism and animosity inthe community. In CT, all the cases where the condemned were executedoccurred between 1647 and 1662. Of the 17 charged with witchcraftduring this period, 9 were residents of Hartford. Three (3) of thesewere executed.
