Chance UK is a national charitywhose mission is to improvethe lives of primary school

children with behaviouraldifculties who are at riskof developing anti-social orcriminal behaviour in the future.

We do this by providing trainedvolunteer mentors to raise a childsself-esteem through activities suchas sport, museum visits, art andanything else the child may ndinteresting. We focus on the childsstrengths and what they do well, rather than their negative behaviour.

Chance UK runs a mentoringprogramme for children acrossWaltham Forest. We work closely

with primary schools to improve lifefor the child, their family and theirclassmates. We recruit volunteer

mentors and train them to work withchildren in a solution focused way. This means helping children

realise they have the inner resilienceand skills needed to overcome theirbarriers and achieve their goals. Itsa very positive and energising wayof working with children. Mentorsmeet with their child on a one toone basis every week for two tofour hours outside of school timeand do fun activities with them. Theprogramme runs for an entire year.

The mentor is given a monthlybudget to cover travel expenses

and go towards outings. Whiledoing fun activities together thementor will note down things about

the childs behaviour and feed itback to them in a positive way. Thegoal is to help children form a morepositive opinion of themselves.

Together the pair will then setgoals to help the child realise theirpotential. Its a fantastic experiencewith huge rewards for anyone readyto become a mentor.

One local child was referred by hisprimary school in 2013. The lettersaid: M has a difcult home life andas a result has very low self-esteem.He nds it very difcult to attemptwork in class or on a one-to-one

    mportant. When I retired, I decided I

wanted to do something worthwhileand constructive with my time.

Thats when I decided I wanted tostudy.

Though she had not studied forseveral decades, Radha embracedthe learning demands of the courseand is now in her second academicyear.

And what advice would shegive to other people who mightbe thinking about returning toeducation when they retire?

I say, go for it! You have to putin the time and effort and dedicateyourself to your learning, but itsvery rewarding.

A very modest Radha added: Idencourage other people who are asimilar age as me to give learning atry. If I can do it, anyone can!

The WRC principle of asking mento take a stand against violenceis now fully incorporated in manyCouncil projects. This includes theEast London Harmful Practicespilot - a GLA funded scheme runin conjunction with Newham and

Tower Hamlets. This two year pilot looks at how

the boroughs and their partnerorganisations can tackle domestic

violence, forced marriage andother similar issues together. It willalso offer training and educationalresources to the staff involved.

Leyton Orient Football Club hasalso been actively working withthe Council since last Novemberto tackle domestic violence inthe borough. The club signed thepledge to support the WRC earlierthis year and future projects with theCouncil will include a short video

There are many different typesof abuse. While physical assaultmay be what most people think ofrst, abuse can also be of a subtlernature, such as psychological.nancial and emotional.
