The stations for regular trains will handle 1.8 million pas- sengers over the two months, sources from Shenzhen North Railway Station showed. The travelers of the summer holiday season are mainly stu- dents, tourists and business travelers. Due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, schools, colleges and universities in the country all have different times for the closing of term, but the travel peak for students is expected to hit in mid-August. Shenzhen North Railway Sta- tion will increase its train trans- portation capacity by doubling the number carriages, from the current eight cars to 16 cars, on 54 pairs of trains including 21 pairs on the Guangzhou- Shenzhen-Hong Kong rail line and 33 pairs on the Hangzhou- Shenzhen railway. Based on regular schedules, it will add 10 pairs of trains for express travel to Guangzhou, Changsha and Shantou, and five pairs of unscheduled trains to Shantou and Chaoshan. For regular train services, the operator will add K9052/1 between Shenzhen East Station and Huaihua to handle peak travel and six pairs of tempo- rary trains between Shenzhen and Yueyang, Liling and Nanx- iong. A TOTAL of 29 postdoctoral researchers from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technol- ogy (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences will receive subsidies from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation this year, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday. The number of postdoctoral researchers from SIAT who are subsidized by the foundation has ranked first among Chinese scientific research institutes for four consecutive years. The 29 researchers, whose research interests mainly focus on biology, materials science and engineering, and biomedi- cal engineering, will receive subsidies totaling 2.32 million yuan (US$328,048). Looking at colleges and universities, 63 postdoctoral researchers from Shenzhen University (SZU) will be subsi- dized by the foundation. (Zhang Yu) A SENIOR citizen and a child of 14 months were hit by a fall- ing tree branch while enjoying the cool air at their residential compound in Nanshan District on Saturday, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The reporter with the Daily visited the site Monday and found that the area had been sealed off. The branch, which is about 5 to 6 centimeters thick, had been chopped into several pieces and discarded at the residential compound’s lawn. “The child, only 14 months old, fainted immediately at that time. The kid was dying when taken to a Nanshan hospital and was later transferred to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital. Now, the kid is being treated in ICU,” said the child’s mother. The senior citizen was slightly injured, the report said. A staff representative of the property management office of the residential community surnamed Zhang said that the office had sent staff to visit the injured and reported the case to their supervisor after the accident. The property management office’s officials suggested that they will be responsible for the case. The tree is located at a place easily affected by winds. The falling branch was probably caused by the recent typhoon that hit the city. The office had reported their plan to trim trees damaged by the typhoon before the accident. They have checked all trees so far, according to Zhang. One underground container can hold 10 tons of garbage. The station, with two sets of the garbage transit equipment, can store 20 tons of garbage at a time, roughly a volume that is able to serve 30,000 citizens. The whole machine also has several smart properties. For example, when the under- ground container reaches 85 to 95 percent of its capacity, a signal will be sent to inform garbage trucks that it is time to transport the container to a final waste disposal site. Additionally, when the smoke detector is triggered or the monitored temperature is too high, the fire equipment will be automatically unlocked to work to ensure safety. Noise is also well controlled at the station. “The noise is little when the machine is working. Some villagers complained that the station will be annoying in operation. But now their con- cern disappeared,” said Wang Jianhui, one of the Changling villagers. When the whole system stops working, there are only two washing-machine-sized containers seen in the area, sur- rounded by flowers and plants.
