Warburg School Any person disrupting school activities or trespassing on school property will be required to leave and the appropriate authority will be notified. Please help us maintain a positive and safe environment. Parent Volunteers: Parent volunteers are welcome at Warburg School. There are a number of important tasks parents can perform to assist the teacher. Parents who have the time and interest in volunteering need to register at the school. BGRS Policy requires that all volunteers complete and sign a volunteer registration form each year they wish to volunteer in the school, and may be required to have a intervention record check and vulnerable sector check. Warburg Parent/School Society: All parents are welcome to the Warburg Parent/School Society meetings which are held every month. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 PM. This is a venue where parents provide input into school decision making, fund-raising and general school support. This year’s chairperson is Mrs. Jennifer Cousins ([email protected] ). Report Cards: Report cards for all students in grades 7-12 are issued on November 9, February 3, April 13 and June 28. Students in grade K-6 will have report cards issued in November, March, and June. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled on November 16 (regular) and April 20 (student led). Teachers and parents may meet more frequently, at the request of either the parent or teacher. All grade 7-12 student report cards will be online only and can be viewed in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you do not have Parent Portal access, please contact the school. Homework: Teachers will assign homework to students or may simply require them to complete unfinished class work. Generally, Jr. high and high school students DO have homework every evening: they need to work on projects or assignments, complete unfinished class work, or review material previously covered. Elementary students may be assigned homework because work was not completed during class time, or to provide review, practice or study for upcoming exams. Parents are encouraged to help their children take homework assignments seriously and to develop effective home routines for completion of assignments.

Warburg School Students are responsible to speak to their teacher upon return from an absence to catch up on any work or exams missed. Lunch Policy: Students are encouraged to remain at school during the lunch hour. Junior and Senior high students who remain at school for lunch eat in the student lounge or homerooms if supervised, while elementary students eat in their classrooms. Hot lunches will be available at minimal costs to the students through the elementary hot lunch program and/or Garfields Concession for secondary students. Students have the option to buy pizza at school on a monthly basis. Hot Soup is offered free one Wednesday per month as well. Parent Council may also offer lunch programs. Locks and Lockers: Students are assigned a locker at the beginning of the school year. While the lock belongs to the student, the locker remains the property of Black Gold Regional Schools and may be opened and searched by an administrator or agent of the Board at any time without notice. Only the locker assigned may be used. Lockers are to be closed and locked at all times. Combinations or spare key must be provided to the office. WARBURG SCHOOL cannot be responsible for possessions missing from unlocked lockers or left on the floor. Students are cautioned to leave valuables at home. Be sure to lock any valuables in lockers or leave valuables in the office before changing for gym classes. It is the responsibility of each student to keep their locker clean at all times. Periodic locker clean-ups are held to rid lockers of moldy lunches and general disarray. Backpacks must be stored in lockers; they are not permitted in classrooms because of safety concerns. Please note: Warburg School Administation has the right to check lockers without consent at any time. Inclement Weather: When inclement weather prevents busses from running and/or the school is closed, specific announcements will be made on the following radio stations: CFCW (860AM), CISN(103.9FM), CHED(630AM), CFRN(1260AM), CHQT(880AM), JOE(92FM), CBC(740AM), GLOBAL, A-CHANNEL. Warburg School Parents please note: It is very important that students dress appropriately for the weather of the day, whether riding the bus or walking to school. Unless it is extremely cold, students go outside for recess and for noon hour and should be dressed for the weather. Bus drivers may refuse to have students get on the bus without proper clothing for the weather. Indoor Footwear: To help us maintain a neat school environment, we expect/encourage all students have both indoor and outdoor footwear. Please avoid the use of black-soled shoes as they leave unsightly marks on the floors. Running shoes are generally recommended as indoor footwear. Lost and Found: Personal items and clothing brought to school should be clearly labeled so that if lost, items can be returned to the owner. Items misplaced by students are generally placed in the Lost and Found boxes. Periodically unclaimed items are washed and donated to charity. Playground Rules: Students are expected to

1. Warburg School is a HANDS OFF school. 2. play safely in the designated areas (not outside the playground

Warburg School Hour Zero Protocol: The safety of our students is very important. Students can expect to experience drills during the school year to prepare them for any potentially dangerous situations. When the alarm sounds or directions are given over the PA system, students must follow instructions quickly and quietly. Directions for primary and secondary evacuation routs are posted in each classroom along with Hour Zero materials. Vehicles at School: Vehicles must be driven safely and responsibly on school property and in the village of Warburg.

● Student vehicles should be parked in the student parking area at the west end of school parking lot.

● At NO time are students permitted to park in the emergency access zone in the bus zone or on the basketball court.

The Library: provides services and facilities that enhance students’ education. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which will not disturb others. Acceptable activities include working on homework, recreational reading, and research. Food and drink are not allowed in the library. Students are responsible for materials they sign out and will be required to reimburse the school for any lost or damaged materials. SCHOOL BUS RULES The school bus is considered an extension of the classroom, and therefore, classroom conduct is to be observed at all times. The bus driver is responsible for the safety of the students on his/her bus and must, therefore, receive the respect, consideration and cooperation of each student.

Warburg School NOTE: these guidelines are based on the Highway Traffic Act, the School Act and Division Policy.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT As in any public place, there are rules of conduct at Warburg School. The underlying rule is respect. All persons associated with Warburg School must, during school hours or during recognized school activities, demonstrate respect to others, themselves and the building and area around Warburg School. The fundamental premise on which rules of conduct and deportment are based is that students who enroll in this school have a desire to learn, wish to attend classes they select and know how to behave in a reasonable manner. Failure to comply with the expectations will result in disciplinary action or suspension. Recommendations to BGRS Board of Education can be made for expulsion from school. If there is a major disciplinary concern, every effort will be made to contact the parents. Parents will be asked to come to school in an effort to resolve the concern. If parents sense a conflict between a child and a staff member, they should discuss their concern directly with the staff member. Continuing concerns should then be forwarded to the administration. The WARBURG SCHOOL Student Code of Conduct establishes the parameters for student behavior, attitudes, and academic effort. It is based on policies established by the School Act and by Black Gold Regional Schools. Section 12 of the Alberta School Act (2002) states that “a student shall conduct himself or herself so as to reasonably comply with the following code of conduct:

➢ be diligent in pursuing the student’s studies; ➢ attend school regularly and punctually; ➢ cooperate fully with everyone authorized by the Board to provide

education programs and other services; ➢ comply with the rules of the school; ➢ account to the student’s teachers for the student’s conduct; ➢ respect the rights of others.”

In addition to the School Act standards, the following Black Gold policy states grounds for possible probation, suspension or expulsion:

➢ conduct injurious to the physical or mental well-being of others in the school;

➢ willful damage to public property;

Page 12: WARBURG SCHOOLws.blackgold.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Warburg... · Parents please note: It is very important that students dress appropriately for the weather of the day, whether

products, and/or other narcotics or drugs) on school property, or at school-sponsored functions;

➢ being under the influence of alcohol and/or other narcotics or drugs while on school property; or at school-sponsored functions; or

➢ use of profane or improper language. In addition:

➢ All students are expected to cooperate promptly and respectfully with all staff (teachers, support staff, etc.) in order to maintain a safe and positive school environment.

➢ Students will refrain from horseplay in the hallways and at lockers.

➢ Students will refrain from inappropriate physical intimacy in the school.

➢ Students, who damage desks or any other property, either deliberately or

because of horseplay, will be required to pay for repairs or replacement.

➢ While custodial staff is responsible for maintaining the school, students should take pride in their school and help the custodians by keeping the school and school grounds clean and free of garbage, graffiti and dangerous materials.

➢ During class time or on spares, students will refrain from loitering in the

hallways. Students on spare should be in the student lounge, library or designated work areas.

➢ Snowball incidents will result in disciplinary action. Further incidents

could lead to suspension

➢ Acts of bullying either physically, verbally or electronically will lead to immediate disciplinary consequences.

➢ Students who break the privacy of a student or staff member through access of private areas such as lockers, desks, cupboards or access students computers accounts or personal devices will lead to immediate disciplinary consequences.

Warburg School Attendance Board Referrals Attendance board referrals will be made when absences significantly affect a student's ability to obtain the prescribed curriculum. It is important that students have access to classroom instruction and help to complete the entire curriculum so they can not only be successful for the following grades, but to be in a position for success in post-secondary school or the workforce. Notification will be provided to parents leading up to an attendance hearing to provide an opportunity to correct the attendance issue. Notification of an attendance hearing will be made in writing to parents/guardians when a student reaches 10 Unexcused absences and/or a combination of 25 excused or unexcused absences. Once an attendance hearing takes place, an attendance board will make a decision that could include:

● legal requirements for school attendance ● fines levied

COURSES AND EVALUATION: ELEMENTARY/JUNIOR SCHOOL

1. Grades are calculated cumulatively across an entire course (not one term at a time).

2. Promotions are based on the principles of objectivity, equity and justice. In each course, students will receive a course outline from the instructor containing a clear statement of course objectives and evaluation procedures. The final exam will normally cover the total term work in a course and will be weighted 20% of the final course mark. Junior high students will be passed on the achievement of a weighted average of 50% or better to be calculated as follows: ➢ 75% of the average of the 4 core subjects (Language Arts, Math,

Science, Social Studies) + Physical Education and Health (averaged together as a 5th core course).

➢ 25% of the average of all complementary courses. In addition, students must pass at least three of the four core subjects in order to advance to the next grade level.

7. The final exam will normally cover the total term work in a course and will be weighted30% of the final course mark for non-diploma exam courses. There are no re-writes on final exams.

6. A passing grade in any subject/course is 50%. Senior high students earn credits for a course if they have a final grade of 50% or above. Any grades below 35% will be automatically withdrawn.

7. Promotions are based on the principles of objectivity, equity and justice. In each course students will receive a course outline from the instructor containing a clear statement of course objectives and evaluation procedures. The evaluation guidelines established in the course outline will be followed consistently for all students in the course.

8. Appeal procedure: Appeals of final course marks should be made in writing to the principal within two weeks of the time the final standing was received by the student, giving the reason for the appeal. The principal will acknowledge receipt of the appeal and indicate a decision date. In reviewing appeals, the following procedures may be used: ➢ consultation with the teacher(s) involved ➢ check of records ➢ interview with the student/parent ➢ review of evaluation procedure ➢ permitting student/parent to see final exam and exam grade

Warburg School The outcome of the appeal will be confirmed in writing. Should a student or parent be dissatisfied with the outcome of the appeal, a further appeal may be made to the Superintendent of Schools.

9. Retroactive credits: According to Alberta Education regulations, students may earn retroactive credits if they move from one course stream to another (usually lower) with a mark of at least 40%. For example, if a student takes Science 10 then Science 24, the student earns retroactive credits for Science 14 upon successful completion of Science 24.

10. On-Line courses may be available to students if a course is not offered in the school or if the student has an unavoidable timetable conflict. A refundable deposit fee for materials may be required.
