Prediction - What could cause native populations to die off in huge numbers? (DOK 2) The Spanish and Portuguese wanted to find new sources of wealth in the New World. The Kings and Queens funded the expeditions. Once Columbus and Magellan finished their voyages, many Spanish and Portuguese set sail to the area. The Europeans were looking for areas that would be safe from future plagues like the one that his Europe in the 14 th century. Religious leaders wanted to spread Christianity to all parts of the world. Why Explore?
