KINETIC ENERGY Kinetic Energy—energy in the form of

motion. Examples—a spinning bicycle wheel, kicking a ball.

The amount of kinetic energy (KE) depends on 2 quantities: The mass of the moving object and its velocity. The more mass, the more kinetic energy.

Example: a truck and a motorcycle are both moving at 100 km/hr. Which one has more KE? Answer: the truck, because it has more mass.

Page 8: Warm-up 3/24/11

CALCULATING KINETIC ENERGY

KE is energy of motion. KE = ½ mv2

m = mass (kg) v = velocity (m/s)

SI Unit for Energy is Joule Joule = kg m2/s2

Page 9: Warm-up 3/24/11

POTENTIAL ENERGY

PE is energy that is stored in an object.

Three types of PE1. Elastic PE (ePE) Energy due to a stretch or compression

2. Chemical PE (CPE) Energy in the bonds between atoms

3. Gravitational PE (GPE) Energy due to an elevated position GPE = mgh

m = mass g = gravity 10m/s2 h = height

PHYSICS TO WIN IT CHALLENGE! Penny Pusher See how much elastic PE is stored up when

a rubber band is pulled back to different lengths.

On 3x5 card: 1. Give the mass of the penny. 2. Pull back the rubber band 1 cm and

release. How far did it go? 3. Pull back the rubber band 3 cm and

release. How far did it go? 4. How far do you have to pull back to get

the penny to go off the table?

NOTES TO A NOTECARD

1. Find where it talks about Potential energy. What are the three kinds of potential energy?

2. What is elastic potential energy? 3. What are the two things kinetic

energy depends on? 4. Finish this sentence: The more mass

an object has the more _____________.

Page 25: Warm-up 3/24/11

NUCLEAR ENERGY

There are two types of nuclear energy Fission and Fusion For both forms energy is stored as

mass in the atoms of certain elements. This mass can be changed into energy under the proper conditions according to Albert Einstein's famous equation:

nuclear fission nuclear fusion

Page 26: Warm-up 3/24/11

FUSION & FISSION Fusion atoms are

"fused" together In fusion lighter

elements form heavier elements

Uses The middle of stars

Fission the 2nd form of nuclear energy

The exact opposite of fusion. In fission atoms are broken

apart. In fission heavier elements

form lighter elements. Uses

Hydrogen Bomb Nuclear Energy Plants

Page 27: Warm-up 3/24/11

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY

Energy can not be created nor destroyed, it just changes form.

Mechanical Energy = KE + PE Rollercoaster mass and spring

Page 28: Warm-up 3/24/11

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY CONTINUED

Your body follows the law of conservation of energy. Ex. Chemical potential

energy is stored in the food you eat.

Ex. Your body stores energy in fat and other chemicals.

Ex. Your body converts the energy to make you move.

Page 29: Warm-up 3/24/11

SWINGING On a swing or a pendulum the

mechanical energy is also constant. To get moving, you need KE. As you

rise higher, your GPE increases. As you move down, your KE increases. Mechanical Energy is constant.
