War Affects the Home Front
• Total war – countries devoted all of their resources to the war effort
–Gov’t took control of the economy
–Factories produced goods for the war
–Civilians (non-soldiers) worked in the factories
• Rationing – ppl could buy only small amounts of items that were also needed for the war effort (butter, shoe leather, etc.)
• TPS: How did total war lead to rationing?
War Affects the Home Front
• Gov’ts suppressed antiwar activity – no speaking out against the war
• Censorship of the news – recall the Battle of the Somme news article
• Honest reporting = ppl would turn against the war
• Propaganda – one-sided information designed to persuade, to keep up morale and support for the war

• Goal: one-sided information designed to persuade, to keep up morale and support for the war

• War also led to the death of civilians through starvation, disease, and warfare
