Warner Brothers Studios On Saturday, September 14th, Yoshie and Craig Roberts are hosting a VIP tour of Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. Guests of the Warner Bros VIP Tour are offered a rare and intimate glimpse into real Hollywood at work. This is not a theme park but one of the busiest working studios in Hollywood. The 2 hour 15 minute tour via carts takes you through back lot streets, sound stages, sets and craft shops. No two tours are alike and guides take you to where the action is. Walk onto the set of a hit television show, watch as Foley artists create sound effects for movies, see how sets are constructed, peruse over 10 million items in the prop department, and see your favorite vehicles from film and television up close in the “Cars of Warner Brothers” exhibit. You will also tour the Warner Brothers Museum and see many famous sound stages.

After our tour, we will caravan to lunch at one of Hollywood’s most famous restaurants, the Tam O’ Shanter Inn, where you will enjoy your choice of (1) Prime rib with Yorkshire Pudding (2) Roasted Chicken (3) Fresh Fish of the Day or (4) Vegetable Pasta accompanied by a classic Caesar salad, a dessert of ice cream and berries and coffee, tea, iced tea or soda. The price of this event is $84.00 per person, which includes parking for one car at Warner Brothers. The charge and tip for the valet at Tam O’ Shanter will be the responsibility of the member. Please be sure to indicate your luncheon choice on the RSVP envelope.

Willy HugronChairman’s CornerChairman’s Corner Well, I can’t believe it’s September already! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and I hate to say it, but the holidays are just around the corner! Yikes!

I was thrilled last week when longtime friend and RROC member Andy Linsky asked me to join him at our local Rolls-Royce dealer for the unveiling of the new Wraith. I have seen the car up close but have not had the chance to sit inside and enjoy all of its wonderful features. My absolute favorite is the tiny lights that come through the headliner that makes it look like you are looking at stars. Such a wonderful automobile and I am sure Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will enjoy great success.

We have many great events still planned for the rest of the year and I hope to see some new and old faces. We are kicking off our first quarterly regional member breakfast and rally in Orange County on September 21st

(no-host). For many RROC regions, this is one of their most popular events and many have it monthly. I hope you find it to be a fun and quick way to visit with fellow RROC members, make new friends and get those PMCs out of the road. See you there! I would especially like to thank our club secretary Carolyn Quadt who continues to volunteer for this time consuming position year after year, for which we are forever thankful. And I would also like to thank her for her extra assistance and guidance that helps keeps me on the right track. Happy motoring!Pierre Lemieux

THE MULLIN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM TOURBy Steve Butler

Michael and Rosemary Tobin hosted the tour of the Mullin Automotive Museum on Saturday, July 27th; a day that was a wonderfully sunny, but not too hot in beautiful Southern California. There was a great turnout of over 50 RROC members with about 15 PMCs, which all looked beautiful parked in front of the Mullin Museum. We enjoyed hot coffee, muffins and pastries while catching up on friendships with fellow RROC members and viewing all of our beautiful Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars that were polished and ready to run. We started the tour of the exotic French art deco cars, furniture and art of the 1920s and 1930s at 10:00 a.m. Due to the many members that attended, we divided into two groups where we were guided by very knowledgeable docents that gave us new insight into the lives and artwork of the Bugatti Family, as well as the many other makes of art deco French cars. We were able to view such exotic cars as Hispano Suiza, Bugatti, Delage, Delahaye, Talbot-Lago and Voisin. The museum housed both restored cars worth many millions of dollars as well as un-restored cars from the Fritz Schlumpf reserve collection. We were even able to view a Bugatti that had been at the bottom of an Italian lake for over 60 years. It sure had a lot of work ahead of it, but there was some potential there. After viewing all of the many beautiful and exotic French cars and some very spectacular French furniture, we drove our PMCs to the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club where we had a great lunch and a wonderful hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and sprinkles. Then as a special treat, our hosts had several raffle prizes that they awarded to delighted members, all as we sat peacefully viewing the yachts in the marina. We want to thank our members who drove their PMCs to the Mullin Museum meet and created a wonderful outdoor display:

The Cover StoryBy Steve Anderson

Our Corniche, Evie (named for the original and only owner,) is the archetype of the 80s Rolls-Royce. She is Porcelain White with Tan hides, was finished in the summer of 1982 and sold through Rolls-Royce of Beverly Hills (RRBH) to a local businessman and his wife. DAC05497 has led a pampered life during her 47K miles and has only been serviced at RRBH. The car was cherished as an occasional driver and used primarily for “special outings.”

My search for a Shadow-era Rolls-Royce began about seven years ago and consisted of reading everything Autobooks, Marinus Rijkers fantastic website rrsilvershadow.com and Google had on the subject. After absorbing the minutiae of Malclom Bobbitt’s Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and Bentley T Series, I narrowed my focus to the earlier iterations of the Corniche. Specifically, I wanted to find a Series II example which featured what was (for me) the more preferable mineral oil hydraulics, CIS injection, pie tin hubcaps and the brightwork detailing that was absent from later variants. I also happen to love the pre-airbag Bake-o-lite steering wheel. Evie was found in AutoTrader quite by chance, as I had looked in all of the obvious places (Hemmings Motor News, RROC Flying Lady archive, contacts at the locals such as Heritage Classics, Vantage Motorworks, etc). DAC05497 was an original, one-owner car that survived the eighties without being updated with the (seemingly obligatory) alloys, painted trim, badges and the horrific trunk mounted CHIMSL (center high mounted stop light). As such, Evie still retains that aura of classicism and dignity of the very early Shadow-era cars.

Since her purchase on New Year’s Day, 2012, I have spent time detailing the exterior and interior, being careful to approach any issues with the idea of preservation or repair rather than replacement. I love all of the exquisite materials and detailing and am fascinated by the lengths to which Rolls-Royce went in creating these cars. I work in the field of product development for the auto industry so the Corniche serves as a sort of antidote to my daily involvement in a culture of commodity and compromise. I often refer to her as my 4-wheeled therapy! Evie now spends her time motoring about the country lanes of Ojai and the southern reaches of California’s Central Coast.

(See the bottom of page 2 for another view of Evie)

Safety Self-Inspection Seminar On August 3rd, Technical Chairman Ronny Shaver held a Safety Self-Inspection seminar for a number of interested members. The all-male group got down and dirty by inspecting under, in and around the volunteer PMCs. Let the photos tell the story!

The Fox Hunt Howard and Betty Green are busily engaged in the preparations for the RROC So Cal annual Fox Hunt on October 20th. This one is expected to be the best ever. These two experienced Fox Hunters always have surprises galore, as well as a challenging and enjoyable hunt. Lunch will be at an unrevealed location that you will reach by following the clues of the Hunt. But not to panic! For those “lost souls” that can’t find their way, there will be a panic envelope directing you to the end location and your fabulous lunch. Freddy the Fox has been exercising and promises to lead us on a merry chase!

Please mark your calendars for this not-to-be-missed event. To the hounds!

Your Club Needs You! The time for the election of officers and three members of the board of directors for the 2014 calendar year is rapidly approaching. Member participation is important and we hope that each member will consider running for an officer or director position. Willy Hugron, the Nominating Committee Chairman, is anxious to hear from members interested in further involvement in the club. There are generally four board meetings a year and decisions affecting the operation and direction of the club are made at these meetings

Members will receive candidate biographies, the ballot and the ballot return envelope in an upcoming issue of The Spirit of Ecstasy.

If you are interested in seeking a position or wish further information, please contact Willy at (714) 894-8417 (home) or (714) 356-7823 (cell). We look forward to another dynamic year in 2014.

Members of the Month

Michael and Margaret Miller have been members of the RROC So Cal for five years and are the Members of the Month for the July Mullin Automotive Museum event. They reside near Austin, Texas but prefer to spend the summer months near the beautiful, cooler Ventura County shore. They enjoy driving up the coast in their elegant 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II, Mulliner, Park Ward drophead coupe (DAJ-22083), which does yeoman duty hauling wine from the Santa Ynez Valley in her well-designed, copious boot.

In between trips, their PMC shares a hangar in Oxnard with several other British marques and a couple of vintage bi-planes. The Millers obviously have a weakness for sleek English lines and their next trip is to the Goodwood Revival in mid-September. They thoroughly enjoyed the Mullin Automotive Museum event and look forward to attending future events in the good company of the RROC So Cal members.

Where Should My Oil Pressure Gauge Indicate? Recently, I received an e-mail from a club member who had just purchased a 1989 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur with 32,000 miles with a question regarding oil pressure readings. He stated that he had serviced the car and installed Mobil 1 5W-50 oil and that after 30 minutes of driving, the oil pressure gauge reads about 10% into the large white band at 60mph, then drops to the start of the stripe at 30mph and finally, at idle runs at the thin line below the large white band. He asked if it could be the oil pressure gauge transducer or possibly an oil pump fault.

Good question! In my experience, the oil pressure transducer is almost always the cause of this condition. The transducer is a combination electrical/mechanical unit that takes pressure from the engine oil system and converts it to a variable resistance to ground for the gauge unit. The gauge is also an electrical/mechanical unit that uses electrical system voltage and variable ground to operate a mechanical needle so the driver can be aware of engine oil pressure. This may seem complicated but it really isn’t.

So why not just have a purely mechanical gauge and bypass the electrical interface? Mechanical gauges were used for years but had two major drawbacks: (1) Running a pressurized fluid line from the engine to the dashboard became increasingly difficult as compared to running wiring and (2) Hot pressurized oil inside the passenger compartment (especially directly over the driver’s feet) can potentially cause injury. To determine for sure that the transducer it the problem, one must remove the unit and install a mechanical test gauge to monitor the oil pressure with actual numbered values. The most scientific way to do this is to install a tee so that the transducer can still be connected and one can compare the test gauge readings to the car gauge readings. Once the transducer has faulted, replace it and recheck readings. Remember that the oil pressure gauge is just an approximation of oil pressure for the driver to monitor while on the other hand, the low oil pressure warning light is a “do not pass go” indicator. If at any time while driving this light comes on, stop the car safely and immediately and check oil level. This has its own transducer that is either off or on and set to illuminate the warning light when oil pressure drops below 15psi. These fail also and the usual symptom is a flashing or glowing warning lamp at idle.

The auto manufacturers (including RR/Bentley) purposefully don’t provide oil pressure gauges with actual numbered readings so that (in my opinion!) vehicle owners will not focus on the numbers too much causing potential warranty headaches.

Happy Motoring!Ronny

Monthly Technical Seminar Reminder Don’t forget that the first Saturday of each month is an informal open shop seminar for members to bring their own cars or just come and watch others with questions and opportunities to fix problems themselves under the supervision of a seasoned RR/Bentley mechanic. Anyone wanting to bring their car must e-mail Ronny at [email protected] prior to the event with items to be addressed.

The location is Ronny’s Garage and the seminar starts at 10:00 a.m. Coffee, water and donuts will be provided.

Bentley CornerWho Were “The Bentley Boys”By Pierre Lemieux Many of the famed “Bentley Boys” were officers in WWI and when they returned home, they found civilian life tedious and boring. But many of these gentleman regained composure in motor racing and W.O. Bentley was happy to find a young and wealthy dedicated group of motorists. Thanks to the Bentley motor car’s rugged reliability, this group of serious racing competitors took Bentley to four consecutive 24 hours of Le Mans wins from 1927-1930, leaving Bugatti in the dust. The Bentley Boys included Sir Henry Birkin, Dr. Dudley “Benjy” Benjafield, Woolf “Babe” Barnato (heir to the Kimberly diamond fortune), Dale Bourne, Frank Clement, Sammy Davis (Editor of Autocar), John Duff, George Duller, Clive Dunfee, Jack Dunfee, Baron Andre d’Erlanger, Clive Gallop, Glen Kidson, Bertie Moir, Bernard Rubin (wealthy from the pearl industry), and Jean Chassagne (French racing driver). They often threw lavish parties and because of their lust for life and speed, the Bentley Drivers Club was founded.
