Congratulations to parents for their preparations, staff for organising the program and our students. I saw lots of happy faces at the pool! Scientist in Schools Program We have been lucky enough to secure a scientist to visit school through the Scientists in Schools Program. In our case we are even more fortunate because our scientist is 2015 foundation parent, Jessica Holien. Jess is a medical researcher specialising in cancer research and has worked with students in the senior school already and will be operating in the school on a consultancy basis in a number of ways. The senior school loved their experience and we are looking forward to Angus E 3/4M Mikayla H 3/4M Brooke C 3/4B Rylee C 3/4B Emma C 3/4H Jarrod G 3/4A McKayla B 3/4H Ryan A 3/4A Baylan E 3/4W Tristan S 3/4H Natasha P 5/6P Emma W 5/6P Cody C 5/6P Alex P 5/6P Curriculum Day, Monday, 3 November

many more great sessions. Thanks Jess! Japan Tour I have seen some absolutely fantastic photos on the blog and the skype system has had a workout this week. I know the students will be exhausted by the time they get back but what a wonderful experience for them. If you haven’t had a look at the blog you can do so at http://japan2014wwps.blogspot.com Car Park Safety Despite our continual pleading and explanations about this issue, the safety of our stu-dents is being compromised by parents parking in the staff car park in the mornings and the afternoons. In fact, this week, there have been more offenders than ever before. PLEASE DON’T USE THE STAFF CAR PARK AT PICK UP AND DROP OFF TIME. PROTECT OUR STUDENTS! Click App You may have seen in the media the latest app for families to access second hand uniforms at affordable prices for a range of different schools. I have attached the flyer at the back of the newsletter for anyone who might be interested. Year 5/6 Incursion Dr Jessica Holien Jessica is a biologist/chemist working at St Vincent's and designs drugs or medicines for cures for cancer. She taught us about how to make crystals and she taught us about micro/litres which is 1000th of a millilitre. It is billions and billions of dollars to reduce and improve the drugs and medicines. When she was at University, she wanted to be a vet. Then she found out that to be a vet, you had to study at least 6 different animal bodies and to be a doctor/scientist you only had to study the human body so she chose the easier one. She also told us about the PH paper which is Litmus paper. Litmus- used for the first time about 1300 AD by Span-ish alchemist Arnaldus de Villa Nova.

Micropipette- first used in 1957 Germany when sugar or salt with water and mixed, sugar dissolves and turns into crystals Salt is sodium chloride Crystallography phosodiestorade Acid Micrometer 1000 times smaller than millimetre Use mice to test on because they are mammies like humans and are cheap

Health Centre Update with Gay Head lice... An ongoing alert The school is aware this is a sensitive issue and is committed to maintaining student health and wellbeing. As part of the school community, we encourage all families to be vigilant with checking their children’s hair weekly to be proactive in minimizing this common problem. Head lice are crawling insects, wingless, that is they do not fly. They live on the scalp and lay their eggs on the hair shaft close to the scalp. Females louse lay up to 5 eggs a day (nits), the eggs hatch 6-7 days after being laid .Transmission is through head to head contact. If head lice are found, please notify the school to ensure that further checks can be followed up, to prevent fur-ther infestation. With all families being proactive we will control this problem from our classes. Finding lice can be difficult as they move quickly. The easiest way to find lice and nits is to use the “conditioner and comb method “.

Apply the soaking layer of conditioner to dry hair

Page 4: Warranwood...2014/10/23  · Females louse lay up to 5 eggs a day (nits), the eggs hatch 6-7 days after being laid .Transmission is through head to head contact. If head lice are found,

Detangle using regular comb, wrap up hair in gladwrap or shower cap , leave 20 mins Comb the hair with the nit comb Wipe the conditioner onto paper towel to check for insects, continue over total of head, particularly near ears and back of the neck. Note -eggs may need to be removed with finger nail along the shaft of the hair. Rinse hair If insects are present, you may choose to use a chemical treatment and following instructions or continue to use the conditioner method Repeat any chemical/ natural treatments 5-7 days after first treatment or Repeat conditioner treatment daily /2

nd daily until there is no sign of nits or lice

REPORT TO THE SCHOOL IF THERE IS A CASE OF HEADLICE IN YOUR CHILD HAIR…………..AND IF THERE IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM ………

There are a multitude of products on the market, seek advice from your pharmacy regarding these, if they are su itable to your child’s personal needs. The conditioner treatment is certainly the most economical , but it takes a little more time... it can be quality time. Let’s all be diligent to rid the school of these annoying and uncomfortable pests. Gay Brown Health Centre
