VICE PRINCIPAL REPORT Assembly to be held on Monday afternoon 2.45pm

With our exciting Maths Day on Monday we will hold our assembly at 2.45pm in the afternoon. This will allow for costumes to be

paraded and all our usual celebrations of student work to go ahead whilst giving the morning session fully to our Maths investigations.

CAR PARK

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for making our car park much safer. Over the last couple of weeks people have been

ensuring our kids are number 1 priority. Well-done Warranwood!

Sad News

I am sad to announce that Sally Benson our schools amazing Educational Psychologist passed away peacefully last week. Those

families who had met Sally or appreciated her skill and support over the years will know that she will be greatly missed. Warranwood

was indeed very lucky to have had her as part of our community.

Cup Day Weekend

Please remember we will have a curriculum day on Friday 28th October. Students will not be required at school on Friday. Staff will be

working on our whole school literacy approaches and in particular exploring best practice in reading and comprehension teaching.

Prep Swimming

I had the chance to visit our Preps at their swimming program at Aquanation yesterday. The students were having a ball and it was

great to see so many parents come along to support and encourage the kids with the big leap. According to Jake from Prep K, “we will

be allowed on the water slide and water playground on Friday!”

Class of 2017

In term 4 we spend considerable time constructing classes for 2017. Students are placed by staff in class group-ings best suited to their learning needs. Many factors are taken into account to create classes that are balanced – academic, social and behavioural factors, along with teachers’ knowledge of students. The students them-selves are asked to nominate students with whom they work well - while this is a factor, we make it clear to all students that they will not necessarily be given their choices of work partners. This process is not about placing children with their friends. Or, as we heard last year, of parents banding together and telling their kids who to put down! The class structure for 2017 will again be Prep (Foundation), Junior School (Year 1/2), Middle School (Year 3/4) and Senior School (Year 5/6). A copy of our Class Formation Policy is in the notices section of our website. As per this policy, if you have information of social or educational significance that you wish to be taken into consideration by teachers as class lists are prepared, please provide that information in writing to Steve as principal (not class teachers) as soon as possible. While taken into consideration, we can of course not guarantee that your request will be met. I encourage you to read the policy and contact me if you have any queries. Please note that requests for specific teachers will not be considered. Classes are structured around the needs of ALL students. Teachers are then matched to classes, taking into account a range of fac-tors. Teachers also move from one area to another as part of their professional development and because we have different number of classes at each level each year. It is therefore not possible/practical/fair to include in to this mix the demands/requests of parents for specific teachers

Working Bee –Help get our school ready for the Big Birthday Celebrations We will have a working bee this Sunday 10am -3pm to move mulch, prune, pave and clean up. Please come along for an hour or two or even stay the day and join in the sausage sizzle. Students of parents who attend will also receive a SLURPEE voucher again! We will need wheelbarrows, shovels, pruning gear, saws, and picks. See you there for a great community effort! VSGA AWARD WINNING EFFORT Congrats to Kirsty and the gardening gang who have been nominated for an award for the work done on our wetland area and veggie garden. The VSGA has allocated a $350 nursery voucher as a prize for us to spend to continue developing the areas.

Office News Statements for outstanding accounts were sent home this week; if these could be finalised as soon as possible it would allow for reconciliation of our Budget. As always if anyone is experiencing finan-cial hardship please come and speak to Steve or myself. The new process of having our excursions on Compass and the parents ability to authorise their child’s attendance is working for the majority of families. Please be aware that your email account listed in Compass will receive emails when excursions have been posted. It is a requirement of the Department of Education that we have parent permission for students to attend off site excursions. Please be vigilant about updating Compass with your details and approving any events your child is attending. It becomes a health and safety issue for students if they do not have parent permission, we don’t want to disappoint your child by not allowing them to go and it becomes a difficult situation for their Classroom Teachers. Japan Tour 2017

Our Japanese tourists have left Lily Vale School in Mito and spent the day at Harry Potter World yesterday.

Rumour has it that Mr Albon managed to get the front carriage and loved every minute of the death defying

twists, turns and dips!

Our students have been blogging and posting photos of their journeys and experiences and appear to have

had an outstanding life changing time away. Please visit http://japan2016wwps.blogspot.com.au/ The classes have also been in regular touch with their peers seeing the sights and places that have been visit-

ed via skype. The world really is a shrinking place!

Remember to check out the blog to find out what our tourists are all up to.

LAST CHANCE TO PREPARE FOR OUR 20th Birthday celebrations

WORKING BEES With our 20

th Birthday Celebration less than a month away, we need to complete the BBQ area to

bring the possum back to life and we also want the wetland and other projects completed which have been held back with some of the rain we’ve had. So we have decided to hold extra working bees to finish these projects and to give those who have said they’ll come along more opportunity to participate, as these are not just working days, but a great opportunity to meet others in our school community.

Working Bee dates are: Sunday 23

rd October 10-3

Saturday 5th

November 10-3

Note: We aren’t asking for a full day commitment, please come for the time you can spare, even if just for an hour. A BBQ lunch will be provided for the workers Tools to bring, if you have them – gloves, hats, sunscreen, wheelbarrow, shovels, forks, mattock, pruning tools, weeders etc.

Garden Club: Tuesday 9

th November 9-1

Note: If there are grandparents, other family or friends who would like to be notified of our Garden Club, which is held about once a month during school hours, please contact the office so they can be put on an email list for this. There will be a job for everyone such as moving mulch, pruning, sweeping to cooking the bbq and keeping everyone fed and watered. Hoping you can make one of these dates, so you can come along and be a part of our active school community, we have found that the kids and adults alike love being a part of it!

Student Wellbeing FLOW TIME Flow is the complete opposite brain state to flight/flight/freeze. When you are in ‘Flow time’ you are using and strengthening the Prefrontal Cortex which is vital for mental health. Flow can be described as ‘losing oneself in contemplation and enjoyment’. Doing an activity that you LOVE like a hobby can be Flow time. Doing something that totally absorbs your brain space, and you could do it for hours without even realising is Flow time. Watching TV, Playing video games and watching you-tube is NOT Flow time. These activities activate your amygdala and the flight/fight/freeze response. Flow time might be things like Playing with Lego, Gardening, Cooking, Drawing, Painting, play-

ing an instrument for example. What is your Flow time?? Find your Flow and get going with it…

it is best done regularly so make time in your schedule for it.

Visual Arts News Kenna, Hayley, Matisse, Amy, Chelsea (together with Olivia and Alanna who are in Japan) have worked together to cre-ate these terrific artworks and donated them to Wyreena Community Art Centre for display in their gardens as part of their MAGICAL WYREENA event this Saturday. There’s been many giggles and lots of fun in the art room as they experimented with primarily recycled materials and through-out this generated their own ideas, reviewed and edited their artwork, solved problems and created gorgeous art that met the design brief. I’m sure the many children will walk the gardens will love spotting them as part of a magical walk.

EVENT DETAILS Wyreena Community Arts Centre is hosting a Mag-ical Wyreena event on Saturday 22 October, from 12noon to 3pm. Families are invited to explore the magical gardens with Wizard Sim Sala Bim and his elf. All activities are free and include craft, face painting and live music. Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite magical charac-ter. Wyreena Community Arts Centre is at 13-23 Hull Road, Croydon. Attendance is free. For more infor-mation visit the Arts in Maroondah website or phone the Wyreena Office on 9294 5590.

Mystery Narrative - The Old Gangsta – By Kurtis Mills 5/6 CT

I can’t wait for Adam to come over for a sleepover tonight we are going to watch mov-

ies and play video games. I hear a knock at the door I walk down to the door to open it

YES! Adam is here

“Hey Adam” I say excitedly.

He looks serious I’m not fazed about it

“Hey I saw this guy on my way here he looked suspicious” Adam says seriously.

I have never seen a suspicious looking guy in my street before I thought. I wonder if

he is a thief? Then all of a sudden SMASH! WOW! What was that I dash up to my

room Adam follows me I see glass at the door. I see my window has been smashed

with glass in every corner of my room.

“I wonder if my window was broken by that guy you told me about Adam?” I say

Adam stands there frozen. He doesn’t say anything for a while. I wave my hand in his

face

“A-A-Adam” I say slowly.

He blinks then looks at me. He yawns

“I’m tired” he says.

It’s only 8:00PM. Adam goes into my room and lies down on the mattress and falls

asleep, then I do.

I’m fast asleep then BANG! Adam and I wake up as fast as lightning.

“What was that?” Adam asks in a hesitant voice.

At first I think one of my balls fell off my rusty old shelf but no “I think it was a-a-a

gun shot” I explain. ARRGGHH!!! What was that? It sounds like screaming. What if a

person got shot?

Adam walks down to the door I follow him. We slowly open the door in fear. There is

a guy under the street light on the other side of the road to us.

“That is the guy that I saw on my way here” Adam whispers. I feel like I am going to

faint. That’s John I always see him at my school gates. He is wearing a old gangsta suit

with his old crinkly face staring strait at me I bolt inside screaming with Adam doing

the same I lock the door and we wait in fear. To be continued next week….
