Positive Coaching Alliance Effective September 23
rd, 2013 the Warren County Parks and Recreation Department
became a partner with the Positive Coaching Alliance.
The Positive Coach Alliance is a national non-profit developing “Better Athletes, Better People” by working to provide all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. Since its 1998 launch at Stanford University by Founder and CEO Jim Thompson, PCA has impacted more than 5 million youth athletes. PCA reaches youth and high school sport leaders, coaches, athletes, parents, and officials through partnerships with youth sport organizations.
At the center of WCP&RD and PCA’s partnership is:
The Double-Goal Coach®, who strives to win while also pursuing the more-
important goal of life lessons through sports;
The Second-Goal Parent®, who concentrates on life lessons, while letting
coaches and athletes focus on competing.
Please visit PCA on the web at www.positivecoach.org

Fencing Classes This class covers the traditions and rules of fencing, physical conditioning and
beginning bladework and bouting. As it requires a rather high level of physical
fitness, beginners should be prepared for a thorough work-out. It is also a serious
sport, and as such is not for those interested in just “playing around with swords”.
Classes meet weekly at the WC Health & Humans Services Complex Café in Front
Royal for a minimum of 6 sessions, sometimes more. Use of the required equipment
is covered in the cost of the class. Classes are offered for those 10 years of age and
older. Adults are welcomed as well, and parents are encouraged to participate with
their child. It is a great way to stay fit!
Those who are sufficiently interested in continuing after the class will need to
purchase their own equipment for long-term use, and there is a monthly fee to
participate. Ongoing instruction and fencing continues year-round, and competitive
tournaments take place throughout Virginia and surrounding states.
Open fencing is available for foil and epee on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
6:00 PM - 9:15 PM. The schedule does occasionally vary, so please contact ahead of
time to verify. The floor fee for visitors or occasional fencers is $10.00. For more
information contact Royal Swords Fencing at [email protected]
Dog Obedience Classes This class will teach participants how to train their dogs the basic skills of sit, down,
stay in place, walk on leash, and come when called. Other topics covered will be
jumping on people, bolting through doors, and any issues the owners consider
problem behavior. The class will learn how to play with their dogs, and fun
interactive games will be taught that aid in the dog learning good response to
commands. The key to a good relationship between owner and dog is to teach the
owner good leadership from the dog’s point of view.
