Denim and lace was the theme of Marnee Kidd’s winning outfi t in the 2008 Grand Final Model Search at Warringah Mall. Decked out in jeans, a lace top from Dotti and black boots, Marnee, then 16, of the Northern Beaches, admitted that day was the fi rst time she seriously considered modelling as a career thanks to her prize of representation by Vivien’s Modelling Agency.“It was such an exciting experience,” says the Year 12 student, who has put modelling on hold for her HSC. “After the event, I juggled school and modelling, including cover shoots for Dolly and Girlfriend and appearances in Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and Simply You. I have also worked for Forever New, Dotti, Jeanswest, Sportsgirl and Cooper Street.”This summer, the fashionista favours Pastel Perfect and Utility Chic and will head to Warringah Mall’s General Pants Co., Sportsgirl, and David Jones for Zimmermann, Sass and Bide, Ksubi and Seafolly.

Like Marnee, Northern Beaches HSC student Kaitlin Allen, the winner of the 2009 contest, had given little thought to a modelling career until she was inspired to enter by a friend’s mum who thought it might be fun.

Since winning, Kaitlin has done test shoots for her portfolio, hair shows for Kevin Murphy, a hair expo and a shoe catalogue shoot.“It has been a great experience and I’ve found that there is really not a great deal of pressure involved,” she says. “The agency is great about trying to organise castings that suit my school timetable and they always assure me that it’s okay if I’m not able to make it.” She plans to source her favourite new-season looks of cropped jackets teamed with shorts and denim shorts, which can be dressed up or down, from Warringah Mall’s Sportsgirl and Calla Collections because “they always have plenty to choose from, whether in winter or summer, and they’re not too expensive for young people”. Susie Deveridge, manager of the Sydney offi ce of Vivien’s, is full of praise for both girls: “We love them. They are fresh, natural, local girls who appeal to younger magazines like Dolly and Girlfriend and fashion brands such as Forever New and Sportsgirl. Once they fi nish their schooling, we will make a plan for them.”This year’s event, to be hosted by Girl Studio on 18 and 19 September and to feature appearances on both days by special guest Marnee Kidd, has expanded to include different aspects of the fashion

and beauty industry to foster a positive self-image among girls, aged 13-19. In the lead-up, Girl Studio founder Cuneo Productions will work with a selection of local students to provide work experience in event management, photography, fashion styling and music.

On towel-dried hair, apply Matrix Essentials Amplify Full Body Texturizer from roots to ends and blast dry. Smooth roots with a medium-sized round brush. From mid-lengths to ends, curl hair with medium-sized curling tongs. Once curled, dab a small amount of Matrix Design Pulse Loosely Defi ned Texture Creme into palm and gently run fi ngers through hair, separating and defi ning sections. Hair is slightly texturised through the ends when cut. Apply Tigi Bed Head Small Talk or Trichovedic Murray River Salt Styling Spray to damp hair from roots to ends. Blow-dry straight using a paddle brush or a big round brush. If naturally straight, throw your head upside down and blow-dry the roots! Apply System Professional Volumagic to damp hair. Finger dry in place, ensuring hair dryer nozzle goes from root to tip to eliminate frizz. Finish off ends with a medium-sized round brush for a smooth look. How are you enjoying motherhood again? Having little Aerin has been just amazing. I’m actually fi nding the transition from two to three children not too bad. I think going from one to two is more of a shock!

5. Try glossing cream, run it through hair then tie up in a pony. It makes your hair soft, but gives it enough product to tame the frizzies.

What have the Warringah Mall Eagles Angels been up to lately? We’ve launched our newest Angel, top Superbike rider Amy O’Mara, and hosted a Manly Women of League function at Brookvale Oval to recognise all the grassroots women of the Northern Beaches who do so much yet rarely get recognised. What the Eagles Angels also do so well is raise money for charity, in particular, Bear Cottage.
