“You say: ‘But how can I serve the Lord? I’m not important. What I do is so common and of little consequence. Anyone can do what I do.’ But I say to you: Every time you meet another human being you have the opportunity. It’s a chance at holiness. For you will do one of two things then. Either you will build him up or you will tear him down. Either you will acknowledge that he is or you will make him sorry that he is - sorry, at least, that he is there, in front of you. You will create or you will destroy. And the things you dignify or deny are God’s own property. They are made, each one of them, in His own image.”

New Study in the Family Faith Sunday School ClassWhen Bad Things Happen to Good People by Harold S. KushnerAs a young theology student, Harold Kushner puzzled over the Book of Job. As a small-town rabbi he counseled other people through pain and grief. But not until he learned that his three-year-old son, Aaron, would die in his early teens of a rare disease did he confront one of life’s most difficult questions: Why God? Where do we find the resources to cope with the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes? In this study, Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi, a parent, a reader, and a human being, offering clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow.Due to cancellations last week, class begins today, join us at 10:10 on Sunday morning – all are welcome!

For a complete listing of all the Sunday School classes offered for everyone of all ages, please pick up a Sunday School brochure in the Narthex and the Gathering Area on the welcome stand. Feel free to speak with one of the pastors or a greeter to learn more about our Sunday School classes.

There is a Calling 21 Intern Who Needs UsLast year many of you had a wonderful experience with our Calling 21 Intern, Julianna Smith. In December, the Leadership Team voted to apply for a 2018 Calling 21 intern. We believe this program gives WMUMC the opportunity to be part of a transformational journey in a young person’s life. The Calling 21 program gives the candidate an opportunity to explore questions of call, service, leadership and meaning and we get to be part of shaping the experience for the intern.

The cost for this program is $3500 and is not included in the 2018 church budget. We are asking you to consider making a special donation to support this opportunity of changing a young person’s life.

* Write a check to the church and designate Calling 21 in the memo line and drop it in the offering plate * Use the WMUMC app and click on the Calling 21 Intern button and give using your credit card * Finally, you can use this link https://warwickmemorial.aware3.net/give/ and make a gift using your credit card (you can choose Calling 21 Intern fund after you put in the dollar amount.)

“Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us; glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus for all genera-tions, forever and always. Amen.” Ephesians 3: 20-21, Common English Bible (CEB)

BISHOP’S CONVOCATIONFAITH, SCIENCE AND MINISTRY: WHERE FAITH AND REASON MEETWe know that 60% of our young people will not take the Christian faith into their adults lives, in significant part because of perceptions of conflict between science and faith. The 2018 convocation will explore two key questions.1. How can the church better engage science so that we can be more effective in our mission and ministry in a culture that has been and is increasingly influenced by science?2. How can we leverage—not just accommodate—popular interest in science?Guest Speaker, Dr. April Maskiewicz Cordero, will speak on the topic, “Exploring the Coexistence of Evolution and Christianity“.The Bishop’s Convocation on Faith, Science, & Ministry will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Virginia Conference Center in Glen Allen. Assistance for Aging RelativesWhen does your aging parent or relative need help?? Sometimes an elderly persons need for assistance is sudden and obvious . More often, though, it becomes apparent gradually. Quite often families need assistance with what options are available. Deciding which one is best is a tough decision. Knowing when the time is right and what is available becomes a daunting task. Trying to understand the difference between retirement homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes becomes frustrating. If you need help in making these decisions call Ginny Spangler 869-7613 Elder Care Consultant. This service is free for Warwick Memorial members and friends.

Expand your Spirit Through Prayer . . .

Household Prayers MorningAs I rise this day, O God, I give you thanks for breath and life, for the people I will see today, for family, neighbors, and friends, and for those whose ways are challenging to my serenity. Help me to give thanks especially for the people who pull me to new understandings and show me sides of life that I have not known or do not welcome. Urge me to follow you today; in Jesus’ name. Amen. Evening As the evening comes and the time for rest draws near, O God, I give you thanks for another full and mystifying day. I have not done everything I had hoped to do. I have not forgiven myself or others as I ought. I ask now that you, who know me through and through, will lead me to let go of what I cannot change and seek anew tomorrow for a more enlightened path. I long for your guidance and your care. Guard my sleep, and let me rise renewed; in Jesus’ name. Amen.
