Where Does it Hurt?

A young boy struggling to concentrate in school…

A little girl who no longer smiles…

A teenager feeling hopeless…

When a child hurts, we all hurt.

A child’s mental health impacts the entire community. But you made it better…

Thank you for providing children hope through Washburn Center for Children!

Dear Friends,

Through your support, 2010 was a milestone year for Washburn Center for Children. The agency brought hope to 2,466 children and more than 7,000 family members—an 81% increase from five years ago.

As you read this annual report, you’ll see how you changed the trajectory of children’s lives, giving them the opportunity to become resilient adults. Thank you for making children’s lives better and their futures stronger.

How does children’s mental health impact you and me? Where does it hurt? It hurts the individual who is struggling, and it hurts:

• Our schools: A child’s mental health is the foundation for their success in school.

• Our families: A family is only as happy as its least happy child. Washburn offers parents a place to turn for expert care.

• Our community: Without treatment, children with mental health problems are more likely to drop out of school or become involved in crime. Early intervention helps children grow into healthy, productive citizens of our community.

Washburn’s work is an issue that impacts all of us.

For 128 years, we have compassionately served our community’s most at-risk children. The community’s growing needs and the agency’s responsive growth placed an insurmountable strain on our current facility. In 2010, we continued to explore a long-term facility solution and made plans to launch a capital campaign that would allow Washburn to continue to meet the community’s needs.

We are grateful for your support as we celebrate our past accomplishments and our vision for the future. You truly make each day better for all of us—because strengthening our children strengthens our community.

Sincerely,

Amy Langer Steve LepinskiBoard President Executive Director

When a child heals, our community heals too.

Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson of Minneapolis Public Schools is often reminded how a child’s mental health and academic success are intricately entwined.

“Children’s mental health is foundational to their ability to prosper academically and socially,” said Johnson, who collaborates with Washburn’s School Based program in seven Minneapolis schools.

“We know that when children come to school with their mental and physical health needs met, they have more capacity to focus on learning,” she explained. “Our success in meeting these needs is critical to preparing students to engage as productive global citizens who contribute to our communities in a meaningful way.”

“The reality is that the unmet mental health needs of students, and oftentimes the mental health needs of the adults in their lives, create significant barriers to accelerated achievement and graduation,” pointed out Johnson. “Failure to meet these students’ needs contributes to increased dropout rates and students not reaching their potential in school.”

“Children need to have the tools that will foster their academic achievement—and that includes access to mental health services,” she said. “Washburn’s work—and early intervention—helps hundreds of students be ready for success in the classroom and beyond.”

Where Does It Hurt?

One in five children experience mental health challenges

that impair how they function at home, in school or

in the community.

How You Helped Make It Better:

97% of parents responding to a satisfaction survey agreed or strongly agreed that

Washburn’s Case Management services helped their child and family improve.

Ask 14-year-old Trace about his therapy and he’ll happily tell you: “Our family is getting along good now.”

Trace’s mental health struggles affected his entire family.

“As a mom, you want your home to be a safe haven, but we were out of control,” explained his mother, Kathy. “It was an isolating place where no family wants to be.”

Trace’s parents turned to Washburn for help when his depression caused numerous family fights.

“I had serious concerns Trace might take his life or turn to drugs to numb the pain,” Kathy said. “Even our youngest child cried because she didn’t want her brother to experience all this hurt.”

Washburn’s therapists helped Trace build self-confidence and coping skills, and provided in-home therapy to help strengthen the family unit.

“Now, we do a lot of things together as a family—things that once seemed far too risky,” commented Kathy, explaining that she often kept her fingers crossed through family outings, hoping no one would leave screaming. “It’s nice to be a family again.”

Progress

“Investing in early childhood development yields extraordinary returns for the community,” said Art Rolnick, co-director of the University of Minnesota’s Human Capital Research Collaborative.

“A child’s early years are critical in determining their success in the future,” Rolnick explained. “Research shows there’s a high public return to making sure the community’s at-risk kids start school healthy and ready to learn.”

Services like Washburn’s Family Focused program offer comprehensive support to at-risk toddlers—and their families—to help children meet developmental benchmarks and be ready for kindergarten. This intensive early intervention gives children a greater chance to grow into healthy, productive adults—and, said Rolnick, reduces their likelihood of being illiterate, needing special education services, dropping out of school, relying on public assistance or becoming involved in crime.

“I don’t think you could find a better public investment than our children—and Washburn plays a vital community role in helping children start off on the best possible foot. Washburn’s work strengthens our entire community,” Rolnick said.

It Hurts Our COMMuNItY | Washburn helps children grow into healthy adults

Where DoesIt Hurt?

As many as 75% of youth in the juvenile system

have mental health challenges that remain untreated.

How You Helped Make It Better:

With early intervention, many former clients have become successful adults, including

a PGA Golfer, a Fulbright scholar and a best-selling author.

Helping Hands for Kids Golf Tournament Raises $80,000For the past 25 years, golfers have teed up to help our community’s most at-risk children through Washburn’s Helping Hands for Kids golf tournament.

The 2010 tournament, held at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in June, raised $80,000 for children with social, emotional and behavioral problems. Washburn is grateful for the generosity of our sponsors, volunteers and golfers who made the Helping Hands for Kids tournament a success.

Washburn’s mission helps children with social, emotional and behavioral problems, and their families, lead successful lives.

The agency’s 2010 highlights include:

u Serving more children than ever before—2,466 children and more than 7,000 family members, representing an 81% increase since 2005

u Inspiring brighter childhoods for children struggling with: behavioral problems, attention deficit disorder, depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, grief or life changes

u Continuing a 128-year-old tradition of helping the community’s most at-risk children; 55% of children served came from families with low incomes

u Planning for the launch of a capital campaign to construct a new facility, and welcoming Don Shelby, former WCCO anchor, as campaign chair

u Celebrating the launch of the Patricia L. Klibanoff Fellowship Fund, a new endowment that supports Washburn’s postdoctoral fellowship training program

u Enhancing services for children experiencing trauma; one clinician became a certified trainer in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT) and 24 clinicians are trained in TFCBT. Eight clinicians received advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

u Expanding services to meet the community’s growing need by adding two therapists to the Crisis Stabilization program and three to the Case Management program

u Enhancing expertise in the area of early childhood mental health by training staff in the DC: Zero to Three diagnostic model

u Offering families convenient access to mental health care through in-home and center-based services as well as 18 school based offices in the Twin Cities metro area

Washburn Games: Giving Kids a Chance to Give BackWhat happens when you combine 100 energetic children, 15 fun sports activities and a desire to give back to the community? The inaugural Washburn Games!

More than 100 kids experienced the joy of helping their peers at the Washburn Games, held in Fall 2010. The event—a non-competitive sports sampler sponsored by 15 Twin Cities companies—netted nearly $40,000 for Washburn’s vital work.

“A child’s mental health is as important as their physical health,” said Mike Brennan, the Washburn Trustee who organized the event. “When kids are strong—emotionally and physically—they can do anything in life. The Washburn Games were born out of this connection.”

2010 PrOgrAM OutCOMEs | How you helped

Day TreatmentDay Treatment teaches high-risk children how to regulate their behaviors and emotions, with the goal of being able to successfully function in a traditional school classroom. Of the 35 children graduating from the program, only two were placed in a more restrictive treatment setting.

Home Front95% of parents responding to a satisfaction survey said the Crisis Stabilization program helped their child avoid an out-of-home placement; 94% noted improved mental health; 92% noted better relationships at home; and 90% noted improved problem-solving and communication skills.

Case Management97% of parents responding to a satisfaction survey agreed or strongly agreed that Washburn’s Case Management services helped their child and family improve and cope with problems.

Family Focused88% of children in the program demonstrated age appropriate developmental progress.

School BasedMinneapolis Public School principals and social workers served by Washburn’s School Based program noted a somewhat or significant impact in several key areas: 83% noted a reduction in visits to the principal’s office, 75% noted fewer suspensions and 75% noted less disruptive behavior.

Preschool Outreach87% of childcare providers who completed a Preschool Outreach satisfaction survey reported an increase in knowledge and/or skills that helped them better serve children struggling with mental health problems.

The Preschool Outreach program served 83 childcare centers and 27 elementary classrooms to help parents and care providers cope with children’s social, emotional and behavioral problems and avoid a disruption in the child’s care.

Outpatient Therapy91% of families responding to a satisfaction survey said they would recommend Washburn’s Outpatient Therapy services to a friend in need of similar help.

Changing the Trajectory of Children’s Lives

Washburn’s therapists use the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) tool before and after treatment to determine a child’s progress and ability to function in school, social and family settings. After 10 or more therapeutic sessions at Washburn, the following children maintained or improved their score:

u 94% of children in the Home Front program

u 93% of children in School Based

u 91% of children in Outpatient Therapy

u 91% of children in Day Treatment who attended 100 or more days

u 86% of children in Case Management

u 82% of adolescents in Crisis Stabilization

When the Washburn orphanage was founded in 1883, the main entrance was on 49th Street. It was the doorway to hope and opportunity for hundreds of children. In honor of that heritage, the 49th Street Society helps assure that Washburn will continue to be accessible to children and their families now and in the future.

49th Street Society members contribute gifts of $1,000 or more each year. Their commitment provides leadership, inspiration and financial support to make profound improvements in the lives of children in our community.

Patricia L. Klibanoff Fellowship Fund

Friends and family of the late Patricia Klibanoff gathered from across the country in Fall 2010 to celebrate the launch of the Patricia L. Klibanoff Fellowship Fund. This recently established endowment supports Washburn’s postdoctoral fellowship program while honoring a woman who dedicated her life to helping children and families lead successful lives.

With a desire to carry forward her mom’s legacy as a social worker and to advance Washburn’s support of children with mental health challenges, Kathryn Klibanoff and her husband Jeremy Pierotti, along with generous support from family and friends, established the fund.

“This endeavor has been deeply meaningful for me and for all who knew my mom,” Kathryn said. “What makes it so sweet is knowing that this fund in her name will annually help children have the support they need and might not otherwise get.”

The Impact of Your Support from a Parent’s Perspective

“Washburn’s quality of care was wonderful, and the ease of meeting in my son’s school was convenient and comfortable for my child.”

“I really believe that Washburn helped save our lives. I had been trying for years to get help for our family issues. We were exhausted and giving up hope. Then Washburn arrived. Thank you!”

“My child learned to recognize and control his feelings in a way other than through anger or physical violence.”
