Hall of Fame Inductees 2013...Clarence Allen Class of 1967 Clarence Allen graduated from Wartburg College with a B.A. in Psychology and Social Work in 1971. He continued his education by earning his Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Wisconsin in 1974. Mr. Allen spent his career as a middle school counselor in the Racine Unified School District for 38 years, guiding children at an extremely difficult age and covering topics from bullying to pregnancy prevention. His work has earned him several awards, including the Althea Branch Wisconsin School Counselor of the Year in 2010 and the Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year in 2011. Outside of the school system, Mr. Allen has been an active member in the Racine community by serving on the boards for Big Brothers

and Big Sisters, as well as The Racine Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. There are very few individuals that can match Clarence Allen’s accomplishments and dedication to helping young people in our community.

Leonard Garver Class of 1950 After his graduation from Park High School in 1950, Dr. Len Garver earned a bachelor’s degree and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and electrical engineering from Northwestern University. In 1961, he began a 33-year career at General Electric Power Systems, focusing on electrical generation and transmission. Dr. Garver developed the basic framework for the modern, efficient electrical distribution system that is now in place across all of North America. Dr. Garver deserves a little thanks every time a light switch is flipped on. He has been rewarded for his hard work with the 2012 Charles Concordia Power Systems Engineering Award from the Power & Energy Society. Dr. Garver, even in retirement, has continued his passion for electrical systems. He has become a prolific writer on the subject of the electric trains here in Racine, and has become one of the most beloved authors on the subject of electric railroads in Southeast Wisconsin.

...Washington Park High SchoolCharles Constantine Class of 1970 The Honorable Charles H. Constantine earned his Juris Doctor degree from Marquette University after his graduation from Park in 1970. From 1978 until 1996, Mr. Constantine served as an attorney, practicing law in Racine. In 1996, he was elected as a Circuit Court Judge in Racine County, a position he still currently holds. He is currently assigned to Branch Seven, which hears cases involving felonies and children in need of protection and services. Mr. Constantine has served on many local boards and organizations over the years. He was a member of the Racine County Board from 1980 until 1982. He is a past board member of the Racine Theater Guild, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Racine Symphony, for which he was president. Mr. Constantine has used his position as judge to help the youth of the community by serving as a volunteer at local mock trial competitions.

David Hughes Class of 1958 David Hughes graduated from the University

of Wisconsin in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. After his college graduation, he joined the military, becoming a pilot in the Air Force. Eventually, Captain Hughes would become an instructor, but not by choice. He requested to fly missions in Vietnam, but was turned down because his ability as an instructor and leadership were needed to train other pilots on the home front. On January 15th, 1969, Captain Hughes volunteered to take a young pilot up for his mandatory flight hours so another instructor could

attend his daughter’s birthday party. During the flight, an elevator fell from the plane, making the aircraft uncontrollable. Both young men died in the crash. Though Captain Hughes never received a purple heart or any other medals for service during the war, his dedication to our country deserves recognition and admiration.

Under his watch, the company’s revenue increased from $150 million to over $1 billion. The success of his career has allowed Mr. McCuaig to become one of the owners of the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. Mr. McCuaig has also participated in many philanthropic activities. He founded the Greater McCuaig Open golf outing in memory of his son, Ryan, which benefits the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeastern Wisconsin. This fundraiser has become the

His work has led to millions of dollars in grants for the mental health care services provided by state governments. His work has led him outside the country as well. Mr. Stanitis was asked by the federal government to evaluate and write reports on the substance abuse service system in London.

HOW ARE INDIVIDUALS NOMINATED FOR THE HALL OF FAME?

Over the years, many inquiries have been made about the nomination procedure. It is as follows:

1. The Hall of Fame Committee sends a letter to the Journal Times requesting nominations from the community. Letters soliciting nominations are sent to the Journal Times in early December and mid-July.

2. Copies of this newsletter are sent to the contact people who organize the various class reunions.

3. Current Hall of Fame members, who receive this letter, are reminded to nominate a worthy classmate and send in their name.

WHAT ARE THE NOMINATION CRITERIA?In order to be nominated for Park’s Hall of Fame, a person must meet three qualifications.

They are: 1. The nominee must be a graduate of Park High School. 2. The nominee must have graduated at least ten years earlier. 3. The nominee must have made noteworthy achievements and/or contributions to

his/her chosen field or to humanitarian causes.

HOW ARE NOMINEES SELECTED FOR INDUCTION TO THE HALL OF FAME?

Not every person nominated can be selected for the Hall of Fame. A faculty selection committee reviews the nominations and biographical data received on each of the nominees, and, based on the committee’s decisions, nominees are selected for induction. The selection process takes hours and hours of reading, discussing and reviewing before final selections are made. Nominees who are not selected in one year may be nominated again. This year’s Hall of Fame Committee is composed of the following faculty members: Jeff Miller, Activities Director and Chairperson; Christine VanDerGeest, Guidance Counselor; Tony Arndt, Social Studies Teacher; Courtney Cobb, Math Teacher; Matt Geisler, English Teacher; Judy Kuchera, Head Secretary.

All Hall of Fame members are invited to visit Park and view the Hall of Fame display case located in the Theater foyer. Three solid oak plaques hold individual black brass name plates bearing the name and graduation year of each of the 245 Hall of Fame members. Plaques are arranged according to year of induction into the Hall of Fame. In addition, each year large photographs and accompanying biographical information of the year’s current inductees are mounted in a separate display case along with photographs and information about the Hall of Fame scholarship winners. The current inductees display will be available for viewing from July through June of the next year. The display case is an impressive sight. Come and see it! (Please feel free to contact Judy Kuchera in the main office in advance and ask for a tour of the building as well.)
